The operative phrase there is "as is", because my understanding of it from IR's reporting is that the fp is designed to facilitate accessorizing, and to that end Sigma's openly sharing the interface specs, so if all goes well then we won't have to settle for using it "as is" for very long. Let's see if this helps them build the ecosystem faster.

With a manual focus lens this sounds like something worth trying, but otherwise I'm so used to back-button AF that I would find this approach unworkable.

If you're talking about Jun Hirakawa, then it's only fair to note that such well-regarded lenses as the DA 16-85, DA 20-40 Limited, D FA★ 70-200/2.8, D FA 28-105, and D FA★ 50/1.4 were all still made after he left, and even the FA 31/1.8 Limited doesn't have his name on it like the 43 and 77 do.

Please explain. Is this not a ★ lens (which are always designed in-house), with Pentax owning the design patent, manufactured in the Pentax facility in Vietnam?
Are you implying that Pentax would not have released it if Tokina had not been willing to buy a license to build it in other mounts?

Oh not again. People really have to learn to stop citing this poem as an inspirational quote about being an independent thinker.
Just look at the entire rest of the poem before the last stanza. It clearly depicts someone who cannot make up his mind, hesitant to commit to one choice for fear of missing out on the other one, wishing he could travel both paths, despite the fact that they look about the same. How is he supposed to know which one is really less traveled?
And even in the last stanza, there's the first two lines which everyone tends to forget about but which make a huge difference to the context: "I shall be telling this with a sigh / Somewhere ages and ages hence". Those aren't the words of someone who confidently chose the unpopular opinion and has no regrets. Rather, this is someone who sees himself years down the road trying hard to justify his choice to himself and/or others, clinging onto any slight perceived difference in order to do so, asserting that there really was a "difference" to be made even though he knows there really wasn't.
It sounds more like what someone who was insecure about his choices as a consumer might say when trying to justify his camera purchase in a mature market where it's hard to make a truly bad choice anymore... which is not, I think, the image we want to convey as Pentaxians.
Why not quote those Apple "Think different" commercials from the 00s instead?

I don't know about NY Comic-Con specifically, but the fandom convention I staff at already does all that (though obviously if they want to run an article on Day 0 then the only photos that will be available yet will be from prior years' events) and has a department dedicated to press relations, and we're nowhere near the size of NYCC. I'm pretty sure it's standard practice.
But as far as I've seen, it doesn't stop the various press outlets in attendance from writing their own takes with their own photos.

Having used the Tamron 28-75/2.8 (A09) on a Canon 5D (12 MP 36x24, so not a very demanding sensor at all), I can say that it's relatively small and light (takes only 67mm filters, unlike seemingly all the other f/2.8 zooms), but I don't like how mine renders smeary by the edges (though that may not be an issue for portraits or even street?) and have pretty much stopped using it.
I haven't used any of the others, but I have to believe the DFA 28-105 would be clearly superior to the Tamron even if you don't need the extra reach.

That's what I was getting at. Assuming that bracketing is not an option for whatever reason, if you know your camera is ISO-invariant, you can get away with that in a single shot. If the camera isn't, then you have to pick either protecting the highlights (low ISO and push) or less noise (high ISO). That's all there is to it.

Norm -- You seem to be coming at this from the angle of there being no advantage to shooting ISO 400 instead of ISO 100 pushed 2 stops. But no discussion of ISO invariance I've seen has ever argued otherwise.
Rather, the value of ISO invariance is supposed to be in being able to shoot at the lower ISOs and push without any noise penalty, so that you can retain any highlights that might have been lost (in the raw and not just the JPEG, because the ISO setting is (in most cameras?) effected via an analog gain stage) at higher ISOs.
This might not matter much to you or me shooting sunsets, where the highlights are critical and shadow detail is a nice-to-have. But I imagine this would be important to people shooting night scenes where much of the detail is in the shadows, so shadows are critical and unclipped highlights are a nice-to-have. Or maybe astrophotography?

Minor historical note -- Carl Zeiss Jena is actually what was left of the company in East Germany (where the city of Jena is) after WWII. At one point they lost the rights to use the Carl Zeiss trademarks in the Western bloc and had to label their lenses for that market "aus Jena" instead (and replace model names like "Planar" and "Tessar" with "P" and "T").
While CZJ was making all those M42 lenses, the West Germany Carl Zeiss operation (where the city of Oberkochen is) was making lenses for the Hasselblad and Contax (and Rollei?) systems instead; that company is the Zeiss that still survives today.

Oh, I'm well aware of the TechArt Pro, and it seems a pretty nifty universal solution. But it still doesn't do auto-aperture. If you want that, you need Nikon, Canon, or Sony/Minolta lenses, and I'm saying that there's no apparent mechanical reason Pentax couldn't also be included, it's just that nobody thinks the demand is there.

Wait, what? All the other expensive adapters for Nikon F lenses that I can see have their own built-in aperture rings and don't give you auto-aperture. Unless by "other mounts" you meant the lens mount, but the thread's about Nikon specifically.
I admit I had forgotten that Sony's LA-EA adapters also included auto-aperture for Alpha-mount lenses, so the ability to engage a lens's aperture lever from an adapter was already proven. So that's not what's preventing companies from offering a similar adapter with auto-aperture for Pentax lenses on (say) Sony mirrorless... it's apparently just nobody thinks it's worth it to put in the effort. :-P

I was about to say that the question then becomes how much auto-aperture is worth it to the Nikon faithful, but then I took a look and discovered that there actually do exist adapters smart enough to give you autofocus and auto-aperture with Nikon F lenses on Sony E cameras (though they're significantly more expensive than Nikon's FTZ). Learn something new every day...

KEH has one used for $43, and they often offer coupons if you're subscribed to their e-mails (this adapter was on their list of "select" accessories that they were giving 25% off on just the other day). Even better, UsedPhotoPro has one for only $34.

Since I'm curious about this too, here's what I came up with:
Samyang AF 24/2.8 FE -- pancake
Samyang AF 35/2.8 FE -- pancake
Voigtländer VM 40/2.8 Heliar -- pancake (but manual focus only)
Sony FE 28/2 -- 200g, 49mm filters -- not pancake but still small and light
Zony Sonnar FE 35/2.8 ZA -- 120g, 49mm filters -- nearly pancake
Sony FE 50/1.8 -- 186g, 49mm filters -- not pancake but in line with SLR nifty fifties
Zeiss Loxia 21/2.8 -- 394g, 52mm filters -- not that light, but way smaller than 21/2.8s for DSLRs
And if you don't mind getting away from the established names, Handevision has their Iberit line that seems committed to the philosophy of small size, modest aperture, and metal construction, though none of them are really pancakes (the 35/2.4 probably comes closest). And then of course there's the new Meyer-Optik Görlitz with all their horrendously expensive pancakes.

Doesn't look like it. The 50/1.8 S, besides being almost as big as the 24-70/4 S when seen side-by-side, also is claimed to have 12 elements in 9 groups and weigh 415g, both more than any existing 50/1.8 for DSLRs that I know of.

My big takeaway from this was that Nikon managed to make an adapter with a mechanical aperture actuating lever for a reasonable price, which I always thought would be the biggest obstacle to "smartly" adapting Pentax lenses to mirrorless. (Even though Nikon abandoned screwdrive AF, Sony's already proven that an adapter with such an AF motor is possible.)

Huh, really? I don't know if the screens in the higher-end (or newer) cameras are better in this regard, but on my K-30, the stock screen just had far too much DoF to get accurate manual focusing. Getting the S-Type screen did wonders.
Admittedly, when I later bought a Bronica (I had never shot film before), I discovered how cool a microprism aid is -- but it only works in the center.

I ordered mine from that very site for my K-30, I believe back in 2014, and it did include some shims.
Except for the S-Type (cut down Canon Ee-S?) with no aid in the center (just Super Precision Matte all over), right?
