Pentax is a way deeper APS-C company than a 24X36 company. Expecting people to toss their crop systems with the release of the K-1 just wasn't going to happen. Especially not with the size disparity between the DA and DFA lens systems.
There's definitely enough interest for APS-C and 24X36 to co-exist, whether there is enough demand for the 645 system remains to be seen. I think if one system needs to go, the 645 is the likely cast-off.
Clearly there is a segment of photographers that feels 24X36 is the holy grail of formats, but there also seems to be a fairly sizable base that feels APS-C is not only good enough, but perhaps ideal. ---------- Post added 03-03-2019 at 09:06 AM ---------- Exactly what I was thinking and saying.

PZ-1P is actually closest to a Pentax DSLR. The MZ-S was designed to use the aperture ring on the lens, if I am not mistaken, while the Z-1p had dual control dials.

This new camera is unimpressive. Yeah, it's an entry level full frame camera, but it just seems like they went out of their way to cripple it. That being said, it will likely sell and stop some of the Canon to Sony bleed that's been happening for several years. I don't see it bringing new users to Canon, however.

I agree. Any APS-C body has to be sized like a K-3II/K-5II because the advantage of it over a K-1 is the size of the body and lens system is significantly smaller in total than the equivalent 35mm system.
The K-5II body was small/light enough compared to the K-1 body to justify its existence. The KP is, imo, too much of a compromise in terms of ergonomics. No top LCD, shallow/no grip, not really ideally designed for larger lenses. Perfect for the DA limiteds or smaller zooms. They definitely need something designed for the DA* lenses.

True true. No one is happy. This lens is too fancy, too corrected and well built. That lens is just a reboot of the original. You'd think folks would be remotely excited that at least one potentially outstanding lens is coming to market and a second pretty darn good lens is getting a slight update. But nope, Ricoh Pentax is stuck trying to please the most miserable bunch of so called photography enthusiasts ever assembled.

I agree. I don't see any reason they couldn't have put the FA 35mm f/2 into a metal barrel and with quick shift and WR, just like they did with the DFA 100mm, which is basically an FA Limited lens. That being said, I'm still glad they did this update as I think keeping the lens catalog active is more important than waiting for new designs to be ready. I'd like to see them push more old film era designs out the door while also working on new modern and higher resolution built for digital designs. Those film era lenses with updated coatings may be good enough for most people to use, there is little R&D cost and they are quite compact. Could be a win win for everyone.

No doubt. But like I said, I'm also a fan of what they did. Either way it's a win in my opinion. There are pros and cons to both possibilities. Also, I guess looking at where the current price of the DFA 100 WR is after 10 years on the market, it's tough to say they could/would have priced the DFA 35 f/2 at $450 vs $399 if it came with QS, WR, and a metal barrel.

It's a beast, but definitely a lot smaller than the 15-30 and still reasonable when compared to the 12-24. The DA 15mm it is not, however. But then the DA 15 doesn't get you to 11mm or f/2.8 or weather resistant. |

Here are some comparison images with the 12-24 and mounted on the KP and K-3II. |

The FA 35 f2 is a really good lens. It's sharp wide open and while it might have some CA issues on higher resolution sensors it really is a quality optic. If pentax did recoat it with HD coating and change the aperture blades, I agree there wouldn't be much to complain about with this lens. The only problem would be why would you buy the FA31?

I'm excited about this lens. I'm also excited about a new APS-C body to put it on. I had the original Sigma 10-20, which I liked. I sold that for the DA 15 which I also like. eventually I bought the DA 12-24, but I've always wanted a weather sealed wide angle. F/2.8 isn't that important to me, but if it's optimized for astro photography it will be welcome. The reason is, the 16-85mm cannot be used for astro and the 12-24 isn't particularly useful either.
This lens paired with the 16-85 and 55-300 will make for a very nice weather sealed backcountry travel kit. For now it would be mounted to a K-5IIs, but I'd love to mount it to something with the imaging quality of a KP and the specs/size of a K-5IIs/K-3II.

It was your copy. The 16-85 is outstanding. I'll be using the 11-18 paired with the 16-85 and 55-300 for a weather sealed backcountry kit. Finally a weather sealed UWA to replace the 12-24.

But you're choosing to look at it like this was a binary decision. Them refreshing this lens means there won't be a high res, over corrected monster that half the forum complains about being too big and way too expensive. When in reality, this is exactly what they should be doing. Pushing out refreshes of existing designs while simultaneously building ground up made for high resolution digital sensor designs. For instance, a lot of people are using the FA 20 with excellent results on the K-1. Why not push a HD FA 20 out the door as a refresh while designing a modern DFA 2Xmm?

I think there is room for perhaps a few sizes in the Pentax lineup. KP size, k-3 size, and K-1 size. Those should also be able to slot into three different price slots as well.

The little LCD on the K-1 is just barely adequate. In some ways it's almost useless but on the other hand I still do use it, even in its crippled form. I miss the big LCD on my K-5IIs. I wonder if the 3rd wheel could be made smaller to fit a larger LCD. Making the third wheel and the function wheel a little smaller would definitely allow a slightly larger LCD.
