I'm pretty sure it works at the long end on FF without vignette. But I definitely wouldn't buy this as a lens for the K-1.

I have to say, on a spec sheet alone, you might be correct - a K-1 is a bargain because it's a K-1 and a K-3II upgrade in the same box. However, it really isn't like that. The K-1 in crop mode has all the focus points jammed together and it's really not designed to be used as a K-3II in disguise. Sure the buffer and frame rate and the pixel density and all the specs look legit, but it's just not really ideally your K-3II replacement for every use.
Also, I wish crop mode gave the option of completely blacking out the full frame. Sometimes it's nice to see outside the frame but other times it's a distraction.

A lot of people liked that 16-45. It was a very good lens. So good Pentax discontinued it rather than let it go head to head with updated offerings.
However, lightweight or not, releasing new lenses without weather sealing is a bad idea. If your cameras are sealed your entire system should be designed, marketed and sold as sealed. I'm hoping moving forward as Pentax updates lenses, they add sealing to the limiteds. I can't fault them for the FA 35mm f/2 because it wasn't really a full on update as much as a coating update and a superficial barrel tweak.

I wanted this lens for a long time... And had it been released 6-12 months ago I'd have bought it and the upcoming K-3III. Unfortunately, seeing nothing interesting on the radar and looking at my lenses (I had quite a bit of FA glass) , I decided to pick up a used K-1 and see what Pentax has done since the K-5IIs. I like the K-1, it's a great camera and I do enjoy using it, but I'd probably be more excited about the K-3III and the 11-18mm 2.8.

I like my bottom of the range 35mm (I hate the term full frame... Full frame what?) but like you, I'd love a top of the line APS-C and I'm willing to pay for it.
In my opinion, Ricoh actually hurt its sales with the release of the 11-18 because I'm sure people like me are waiting to spend that $1300 on the new K-3III and until then I've got the K-1 and K-5IIs and DA 12-24. I'll definitely be interested in that 11-18 as well, but I want the K-3III and I'm not blowing that budget before it arrives.

Assuming the image quality of the FA 28-105 was identical to the DFA. I'd personally still have dropped the $350 I paid for it because I wanted a weather sealed zoom.
Unfortunately that's an issue with the older lenses or third party lenses. Even if all things are equal, if you want a sealed system, all things aren't equal.

Pentax is a way deeper APS-C company than a 24X36 company. Expecting people to toss their crop systems with the release of the K-1 just wasn't going to happen. Especially not with the size disparity between the DA and DFA lens systems.
There's definitely enough interest for APS-C and 24X36 to co-exist, whether there is enough demand for the 645 system remains to be seen. I think if one system needs to go, the 645 is the likely cast-off.
Clearly there is a segment of photographers that feels 24X36 is the holy grail of formats, but there also seems to be a fairly sizable base that feels APS-C is not only good enough, but perhaps ideal.

Looks like someone is going to buy it. I actually have an FA 43 so my interest in it was mostly because of its weather sealing as a fast normal on the K-1. Good luck with the potential sales via the PMs. If they don't work out I am still interested in how it works on the K-1 wide open.

I never used the MZ-S, so I'll default to your opinion on it. But I did use the PZ-1P for quite a few years before I bought an istD and the transition between the two was very easy.
On the plus side for the PZ-1P, currently the price is very low, so buying one is pretty easy entry. If it doesn't work out you can always buy into the MZ-S which still has a higher selling price.
I also used the *ist for a while before the the digital switch and it was a great little camera but I never liked it as much as the PZ-1P. I think Pentax really hit the specs and ergonomics with the PZ-1P. That 1/250th flash sync still hasn't been replicated on a DSLR.

PZ-1P is actually closest to a Pentax DSLR. The MZ-S was designed to use the aperture ring on the lens, if I am not mistaken, while the Z-1p had dual control dials.

Yep, great example.
Some AI made it into the new Olympus camera as well. I believe for panorama stitches and the autofocus learning, among other things.

Perhaps as cameras compete more with the computational photography of smart phones and see greater amounts of Ai they will see more frequent updates across all brands.

I got the Irix 15mm, but I'd still love something a little less wide and smaller. The Irix being weather sealed gave it an edge for me over the Samyang. Both seem to be good lenses.

This new camera is unimpressive. Yeah, it's an entry level full frame camera, but it just seems like they went out of their way to cripple it. That being said, it will likely sell and stop some of the Canon to Sony bleed that's been happening for several years. I don't see it bringing new users to Canon, however.

I use a similar setup when I go light. 15mm, 21mm and either DFA 100, M-150, or lately the 55-300 WR (small, great IQ, sealed). I'm one of those guys that's collected a fair amount of lenses, but I don't consider myself a lens a collector. I've just gotten bad at selling off what I'm not using. I think it's only hoarding or "collecting" if you don't use it. If you happen to be lucky enough to have time to use all the gear you collect, it's merely facilitating your hobby.

the FA 35 is actually a ~2001 release, I think. I originally had it and the FA 50 with my K10D back when the K10D was released. But the FA 35 was discontinued and then unofficially just put back into production sometime in the last decade. It's a lens with a complicated history.

I have it too. It's probably plastic where it extends (I'm not near it now). But the quality of it is definitely somewhere between DA* and DA Limited. No complaints about the lens, really. Sharp, small, well built, weather sealed. Ticks off all my wants.

No doubt. But like I said, I'm also a fan of what they did. Either way it's a win in my opinion. There are pros and cons to both possibilities. Also, I guess looking at where the current price of the DFA 100 WR is after 10 years on the market, it's tough to say they could/would have priced the DFA 35 f/2 at $450 vs $399 if it came with QS, WR, and a metal barrel.

I agree. I don't see any reason they couldn't have put the FA 35mm f/2 into a metal barrel and with quick shift and WR, just like they did with the DFA 100mm, which is basically an FA Limited lens. That being said, I'm still glad they did this update as I think keeping the lens catalog active is more important than waiting for new designs to be ready. I'd like to see them push more old film era designs out the door while also working on new modern and higher resolution built for digital designs. Those film era lenses with updated coatings may be good enough for most people to use, there is little R&D cost and they are quite compact. Could be a win win for everyone.

I agree. Any APS-C body has to be sized like a K-3II/K-5II because the advantage of it over a K-1 is the size of the body and lens system is significantly smaller in total than the equivalent 35mm system.
The K-5II body was small/light enough compared to the K-1 body to justify its existence. The KP is, imo, too much of a compromise in terms of ergonomics. No top LCD, shallow/no grip, not really ideally designed for larger lenses. Perfect for the DA limiteds or smaller zooms. They definitely need something designed for the DA* lenses.

Yeah, I don't buy for a moment that you can't possibly print large with Oly or a small sensor. just because you have a full frame high megapixel sensor or a medium format sensor every photograph that comes out of your camera isn't going to be a Peter Lik sized wall art. A lot of how big you can print has to do with the lens, the settings, and most importantly the technique you used in getting the shot. Shooting a K-1 from the hip or an Olympus carefully on a sturdy tripod with MLU, etc, the Oly photo has a better chance of being wall art. The idea that small sensors are automatically rubbish is foolish.
