If you're having issues with your aperture sticking, check this out.

I recently discovered my K-30 (low count of shutter activations) would not set the aperture properly using my legacy lenses. The aperture no longer worked properly in strictly manual or A modes. I've found I have to kick start the camera by doing the following:

In the menu, go to button customization, RAW/Fx, optical preview. Scroll through the options and select optical preview. Select OK, then press menu, and menu again to exit.

Now, before trying to capture an image, press the RAW/Fx button once or few times. This should get everything working as it should.

Help with K-30 firmware update

Well, this may have been the case....I picked it up this evening, and put a manual 28 on it. I shot a few shot with different apertures and it worked fine. Then I put on a kit 18-55 lens, put it in AV and shot a few pics in burst mode. I probably shot 30 or so burst shots and it started working.

So, I tried to take a few individual pics with the kit lens in P, M, and AV modes and it worked. Then I put on an A 35mm lens in AV mode. It worked fine. Then I put it into M mode and the aperture is responding normally.

This is not a high mileage body, so I'm a bit puzzled. I guess it doesn't matter as it's back to working as it should. It's still a mystery, but it's working.

.................................well I spoke too soon. I went back and tried it again. Aperature not working in AV mode. Shot a burst or two, and it works again.........
thanks for your help everyone. It's appreciated. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!

Help with K-30 firmware update

Hi Adam, thanks for the reply....yes it happens during exposure. The automatic "A" setting on my Pentax A lenses, and aftermarket A lenses all appear to be stopped down all the way for every exposure in AV or M modes. I've even tried it in P mode, and obviously that shouldn't work and it doesn't. The image results are severly underexposed and usually just a black image. If I take the lens out of the auto A setting, and proceed to use the aperture ring settings manually, the exposures come out fine. Before the firmware upgrade, the A setting worked just like it's supposed to in AV mode.

Again, I've tried all my A lenses on my K3 to verify they work in the A setting and they do. I've also tried them on my old K100D body and the results are as they should be.

This is very frustrating as I love the K30, and probably use it twice as often as I use the K3. It has excellent image quality and performance. If I had some resource to flash the firmware back to an older version, I most certainly would.

Additionally, if in AV mode on the K30, I set the aperature in at the A setting and then adjust via the cameras software to f22, it takes the photo with some of the image clearly exposed although underexposed. If I open up the lens to f2.8, the exposure is completely black. So, in AV mode with the auto A setting on the lens, it appears that it works somewhat and in reverse. It's very strange.

WOW!! HERES ANOTHER UPDATE:

I just put on the kit lens...DA18-55mm. Later water proof model. Put the camera in P mode. Completely underexposed image. Put the camera in Green mode...completely underexposed. Activated the flash.....completely underexposed. What the heck is going on?

Happy Holidays!

HELP!!!!!!

After upgrading my K-30 to the latest firmware update (1.06), my camera will not work with "A" lenses! The "A" feature is not functioning properly, and if I change the aperature setting using the wheels, f22, for instance is open and f2.8 is stopped down! If I move the aperture ring from "A" to an aperture setting in AV or M modes the camera and lens work OK. Before the firmware update, everything worked fine!

At first, I thought it might be a problem with the lens, but I get the same result with all "A" lenses.

I've also updated the firmware in my K3, and it works fine with all the "A" lenses.

Thanks in advance for any and all help,
Wayne

I would suggest you give some thought to a vintage 50 or the DA 40 pancake. You'll be able to get great shots.....portraits and landscapes. Very compact and light weight, with great IQ. Of course the 18-135 would be a very good choice as well, with a larger size.

Also, perhaps consider renting lenses.

San Francisco. Shot on Saturday evening. K30 and DA 70 Limited. Slik Able 300DX Tripod. Shutter activated with remote control. I also shot with DA 21 limited, DA 40 Limited, and DA 55-300. With the DA21 Limited, the Field of View was wide enough to catch the houses and cars on both sides of the street I was on. I shot B&W only with the 21 and 40, so I'm not including them as samples.

Help me choose a lens for night photography

I always carry a tripod in my car, and when walking, I have a mini tripod and/or a full size monopod in my backpack. My shots usually suck with the monopod, though.

I was only able to go to Potrero Hill and shoot the City. Traffic was far too heavy to go to the Gate, and there was absolutely no parking anywhere in the City. The crowds were thick, the restaurants and bars full, and lots of people dressed in costumes, and ladies in skimpy outfits. I drove around for an hour and a half trying to find somewhere to park. Shame really, it's an ideal night for candids.

Help me choose a lens for night photography

Hi everyone,
I'm planning a trip this evening to the Golden Gate bridge in hopes of rolling fog. At any rate, after that I'm going to shoot in the City tonight. I'll be shooting nightscapes of the City, but my question really is this: what lens to use for night walk around?

Heres what I'll be bringing:

SMC-A
50/ 1.4
50/ 1.7
28/ 2.8
35/ 2.8

Tamron Adaptall-A
24/2.5

SMC
100/4 Macro
135/ 3.5
200/ 4
17 Fisheye

DA Zooms
18-55 WR
50-200 (my usual walk around shooting B&W)
55-300

FA Zoom
100-300

Fixed Aperture
600

Long Tele
500

DA Limited
21/3.2
40/2.8
70/2.4

I'd like to just carry a couple of primes tonight, but I'm undecided...................

I've attached some of my typical walk around shots, and these are shot with a zoom. These are virgin shots, no PP, no cropping. No zoom tonight unless you convince me otherwise......

Thanks!

AA adapter a worthwhile investment?

I do have the battery adapter for my K30 and shot several hundred photos and some video during America's cup. I used Tenergy LSD AA batteries, and at the end of the day, still showed full charge! I didn't use the flash, but I was shooting bursts, and at least 15 minutes of video.

The Lithium battery pack whether Pentax or after market needs to be completed cycled at least three times before it will achieve full capacity. My smartphone batteries would only last a few hours when new, and now after a couple of dozen cycles each, they last nearly a day.

K-30 and UHS1 card "Memory Card Error"

I just purchased 2 Samsung 32GB Class 10 SDHC UHS1 memory cards. Neither of my two K30 bodies will accept them. I get the Memory Card issue in both. I tried the memory in my Kx body, and it read the card fine. I was also able to format the card in the Kx. I tried putting it into a K30 after the Kx had formatted it, but go the same error message.

Both my K30 bodes have updated firmware to Version 1.05.

By the way, the Samsung cards work fine in the computer, and again, in the Kx. I didn't try them in my K100D bodies.

Apparently there is something going on with the K30 software/firmware.

Memory Card Error with Sony 32GB SDHC Class 10

I just purchased two Samsung 32GB SDHC UHS1 Class 10 cards. Neither will work in my K30 bodies. They work fine in my computers, and they work fine in my Kx. I tried formatting one in the Kx, which worked fine, and then putting it in one of the K30's. Again, "Memory Card Error". Perhaps Samsung makes the card for Sony. There are only a few companies in the world that make Flash memory, Toshiba, Samsung and some Chinese companies. At any rate, Samsung memory doesn't work in the K30 either. I find the compatibility with the Kx and not the K30, interesting and puzzling at the same time. I didn't try them in my K100D bodies.

By the way, yes the card lock was turned off. Yes, I know how to insert memory cards. My two K30 bodies are each updated to Firmware version 1.05. Yes they both have fresh batteries. Polaroid 32GB Class 10 SDHC, and Unirex 32GB Class 10 SDHC cards work perfectly.

K100D Super vs K100D

I have 3 K100D cameras. One of them, however, has the firmware and features of the K100D Super (dust removal from the sensor). Were there models of the K100D that included dust removal, or do I have a fluke (K100D Super, but marked as a K100D)? When I go into the menu and select sensor clean, then mirror up, the mirror goes into the upright position and the sensor pulsates to shake off dust. My other 2 K100 bodes only raise the mirror.

All three bodies are using firmware version 1.02.

Is there a hack to make this feature available on the two bodies that don't exhibit this feature?

thanks,
W6WAT

I have a somewhat rare Honeywell Pentax Spotmatic. It's Black with White lettering. It's in really good shape with a small scrape to the paint on the prism hood. The Black paint is worn on the viewfinder eyepiece as well. The body leather is in excellent condition and not de-laminating anywhere. It needs a battery for the meter, but otherwise works well. It has the original owner's name stamped into the back of the top sheet metal. His name is also silk screened onto the original fit case that is velvet lined and has a small pocket built in for a spare meter battery. The snaps work as they should and show no fatigue at their mounting points. It also has a nice strap.

With it, I have the following:

M42 Asahi Super-Takumar 1:1.4 50mm, with Hoya skylight filter and original metal cap
M42 Sigma-XQ Filtermatic multi-coated 1:2.8 24mm with Toyo optics 1B and original metal cap. This lens has built in rotating filters in blue, yellow, orange, and skylight.
M42 Asahi Super-Takumar 1:3.5 28mm with Hoya HMC Skylight filter and plastic pinch style lens cap
M42 Asahi Super-Takumar 1:2.5 135mm with Tiffen UV filter and plastic pinch style lens cap, plus the original metal hood
M42 Asahi Super-Takumar 1:4 200mm with Hoya HMC Skylight filter and original metal cap, plus the original metal hood
M42 Asahi Super-Takumar 1:3.5 35mm with Rolev M.G. Skylight filter and plastic pinch style cap.
M42 Asahi Super-Takumar 1:2.8 105mm with Zeikos UV filter and original metal cap.
M42 Auto Prinz VAr-1 Rim Lens Extender for Pentax (Made in Japan) in original stitched leather case.

Crown Model T-3300 Thyristor manual zooming flash with removable diffuser and tilt/rotate head. Auto/manual settings up to ASA1000.
Rubber eye cup.
Extension rings #'s 1,2,3
Tamron Adaptall for Pentax M42
3 different length cable releases in braided stainless
Asahi Pentax eyepiece mount hotshoe
Hotshoe cable
Cabled remote hotshoe
1 new in package Wein replacement battery for the meter. However, this is old and I'm not sure if its good.

All items are in very good to excellent condition. The lenses overall are in very good to mint condition, some with some wear showing on the focus rings. The 105mm lens has a wobble to the focus ring, that affects nothing. I'm sure someone in the know, can tighten the set screw that probably loosened.

If I decide to sell, I know there is some collectible value to each item, or collectively as a set. I really have no idea of what the value should be. I don't want to charge excessively, nor get ripped off, so I'm posing the question to all you experts, collectors and photogs. If I sell, I'd really like to see it go to someone who will get some use from it or display it with appreciation. I also have many other bodies, Asahiflex, spotmatics, MX, ME Super, Super Program, motor drives, accessories galore, and several Auto 110 kits. Most of the 35mm bodies work well, and are in super condition. All the Auto 110's work, and I even have film! I have much vintage glass as well. Some really excellent lenses from Asahi, Pentax, Vivitar, Sears, Mamiya, Zeiss and others are in my collection as well.

So, what's this stuff worth?

Thanks,
Wayne

Hello All,
I've been absent from this forum for awhile and not really up to date on everything.
I have several MX bodies. A couple of them have stuck shutters as well as a couple of my Spotmatics. Can anyone clue me in as to how to unstick them, or guide me to a reputable and reasonable repair shop in Southern California?

Thanks in advance!

what's the best zoom?

I've been considering the 16-45, and it's right near the top of the list. However, I'm also drawn to the 18-250 because of the excellent range, but I've not found a lot of real hands on experience from anyone.

I guess the ideal lens would be something like 12-300, and about the same size as the kit lens. But, that doesn't exist yet, so I'll have to settle for something close. The 17-70 really sounds intriguing, but I'd like some first hand opinions on size, weight, handling and IQ.

Thanks for your advice so far!

I'm looking for your "EXPERIENCED" opinions concerning walk around zoom lenses. I've got some vacation time coming up soon, and there will fishing boats, hunting, and the usual cityscapes, skylines, sunsets, sunrises, portraits, architecture, and so on. There probably won't be any long telephoto shots for the majority of my shooting, but I'm not opposed to a lens with reach and wide angle. I'm only interested in your experiences with Pentax branded zoom lenses. I'm experiencing failing eyesight (damn that getting old thing):(, so I'm looking for help from AF. Please don't offer advice concerning primes.

I already have:

DA 18-55
DA 50-200
FA 100-300

I have Pentax MF lenses from 17mm to 300mm, and other brands of primes covering to 600mm. I also have a boat load of MF zooms. However, I prefer the quickness and accuracy of AF over my aging eyes.

I'm pleased with the overall performance of the DA 18-55 kit lens, but would like a walk around lens that may give me better IQ more often, and perhaps slightly wider. Increased range wouldn't hurt either.

So what do you have? What have you used? How do you use it?

Thanks in advance for your help. Oh, by the way, I don't have an unlimited budget, and so the really expensive top of the line stuff is pretty much out.

Hello, I put my Samsung GX-1L body into my case with the memory door open. The case wedged the memory door backwards, distorted and slightly cracked it. It will still work with some coaxing to unlatch and latch it.

Who do you recommend for service in Southern CA?

I'm afraid Samsung's customer service reputation with applicances is less than stellar, and I can't find much on their reputation with photographic products. I'm more inclined to find an authorized or independant Pentax service center.

Your recommendations, please!

Howdy,
I left the memory door on my Samsung GX-1L open and put it into my case. While closing the lid, the memory door was wedged, stressed backward and slightly cracked. It won't close shut now without a bit of coaxing. Who and where is a trusted Pentax/Samsung DSLR repair facility in Orange/Riverside/San Bernardino/Los Angeles Counties?

If I send the camera to Pentax, will they repair a Samsung branded item?

I've heard nothing but bad reports about Samsung customer service for Appliances and other items, but haven't heard anything about their phographic division. How about dealing with them?

thanks in advance

I used to have a photography website....well more of a webpage with members. One of the guys that would post regularly was a pro, and he did a lot of aerial photography. That guy had fantastic images made while hanging out of the doors of airplanes, like old WWII bombers and the like. He would photograph other aircraft flying beside, and even shots of the plane he was "in" from outside the door. Wild awesome imagery!

Screw-in wide angle?

Hey Gary,

Stay away from those add on lenses unless you're interested in the novelty aspect. They create some serious distortion.

Instead, consider getting a wide angle M42. You can probably get a screw mount wide angle for less than a K, M, A, FA, FA J, DA DA*.

Of course you can find non-Pentax branded wide angles, and some at bargain prices. Even the worst of these will be superior to a lens attachment, in either screw or K mount.

Good luck with your choice, and let us know what happens!
