Good morning all, I was wondering what my parents did to fight boredom before the internet.
I asked my fifteen brothers and sisters and they didn't know either.
And over the fence yesterday evening, my neighbour confided that he was too scared to plant an apple tree.
I told him to grow a pear.
This week I want to talk about lens hoods. They're not essential for every photo, but can make a big difference in situations shooting outdoors in particular.
Hoods can mitigate loss of contrast. That's when your photos look dull or flat because stray light is bouncing around inside your lens and reducing the difference between the dark and bright area - there aren't any true blacks in the picture, just dark greys, and the colours seem desaturated, washed out and unnatural. That's a retro look you actually strive for in some stylish photos, but they're flaws if not the intention.
Lens hoods also form your lens' first line of defence from accidental bumps, drops, scratches, or fingerprints while walking around, the lens cap obviously next.
Note that if your Pentax has a pop up flash, remove the hood when using it, as the extension can block the light from reaching your subject.
There are two main types of lens hoods. Generally speaking, the round ones are better for telephoto lenses. Petal-shaped lens hoods are designed for wide-angle lenses, and they have curved cutouts that match the shape of the lens's field of view. This way, they block the maximum amount of stray light and minimize the vignetting interfering with the image. The example below (credit: Pentax Australia website) is the one for the DA18-55 kit lens.
If you're caught without your hood, you can improvise with your 'spare' hand just out of shot, trying to flag off the nearby light source or reflection.
To finish with, there's the story of the man who goes to his doctor for a complete checkup. He hasn’t been feeling well and wants to find out if he's ill. After the checkup, the doctor comes out with the results of the examination.
“I’m afraid I have some bad news. You’re dying and you don’t have much time,” the doctor says.
“Oh no, that’s terrible. How long have I got?” the man asks.
“10.” says the doctor.
“10? 10 what? Months? Weeks? What?!” he asks desperately.
“10…9…8…7…”, says the doctor.

Got caught out by the fast rising tide at my home beach. On dry sand one moment and almost knee deep the next, cue jeans soaking with wet sand and seawater and wet feet...

There's a trend of most camera brands to boost vibrancy more and more to make photos catch attention. It's like the added salt, sugar and glutamate into foods, making people senses less and less sensitive to natural levels. Such that if you remove those taste enhancers, most people sense will feel the food isn't tasty enough. But in color photography , it's no different than contrast boost in b&w film, it's relative. Maybe , dial down saturation / vibrancy a notch to avoid photographs to appear unreal to the viewer. I like the old CCD look, so much accurately closer to real life color palettes, as I feel that modern CMOS images are too cold/ metallic.

Or we could just post images without being judgemental and alienating people. It's art and it's subjective. No one says you have to like it.

A lonely mangrove sets off the scene in Bundeena - a tranquil spot within the Royal National Park to the south of Sydney. I had no idea that this place even existed until I ended up there on a family camping trip. Conditions weren't great, so obviously I had to go back within a day of getting home, this time on a clear forecast!

Fun picture. This is a failed night shot, which I flipped to imitate IR and disguise the flashlight's bright spot. Taken in 2016 on a game drive in South Africa. The new look is very Blair-Witch. Almost looks like a charcoal sketch.
