Advice: Which Older (Cheaper) Pentax Body? (to pair with 50mm 1.2)

Especially if it's digital! Broken black K-30 is at the top of my list right now.

You're right, this is the way to go. The difficulty is finding one. I couldn't find anything recent that sold on eBay that was specified as aperture failure, and the only one over here on PentaxForums was this. I guess I'll have to maintain some patience or donate and create a WTB.

I thought this was a thread for shots of people distracted by Pokémon Go! If I had a camera I would definitely be out there having fun taking some street shots of people glued to it. Although, the craze has kind of died down.

To be honest I didn't remember that but stumbled on a thread where it was explained. Funny that I was just looking at the 35mm when you submitted this reply!

You're right here, it's probably worth it to use the 50mm on a good body than spend the money on new glass and an old body. For some reason I'm picky and hate the white body (and coloured versions), but I'll be watching that to see how much it goes for.

It was mentioned by someone once, and looking at the past prices they've sold for it is very appealing (although I can't find any current ones for sale). The problem here is it limits me if I would want to purchase a newer lens. Although, my intention was to use the 50mm as a sole lens for a while until I purchased another. I could also just become an old lens connoisseur and buy some good cheap manual glass. I'm still slightly wary of purchasing a fully functioning K-30 as it would have the possibility of getting the problem.

Thanks to everyone for all the good input and camera suggestions (especially VoiceOfReason for concrete suggestions, but some of those cameras went super quick on eBay). Also, thanks to those who put in their thoughts on ergonomics and more detail (sound), very helpful. I've been following the discussion and don't want to multi-quote everyone in a giant post, but I'll try to address most things because there's a lot that's been discussed.

Selling my LX/50mm 1.2 combo could easily help fund a kit purchase, but it belonged to my Father and I can't make the mistake of selling his Pentax stuff again! I already made the mistake of selling his K1000 kit to help fund my Nikon purchase and deeply regretted it. Although I feel slightly bad it's not getting used and could be better put to use by a Pentaxian which would put me at ease. I was planning on asking about non-Pentax bodies that worked, but I've decided that I want to stay within Pentax for sure.

I think this is a great idea. I should just stay within my budget now, pick up something cheap and then see in what ways the body limits me and what lenses I lust after in the future!

Thanks for this, I went and checked and you're right here, I definitely have the M version (no A setting on the aperture ring next to f22). Your sentiments on the K-30 really make it appealing if I plan to use my 50mm 1.2 with it. But why did Pentax have to hire a designer for the K-01? If they just mimicked old SLR designs in a mirrorless format (like other companies are doing) I think they could have hit a home-run. I really like the Fujifilm designs. It seems like a no-brainer to bring back a loved SLR design with an optical viewfinder and focus peaking that excels with legacy glass.

If I get something I'll definitely come back and be active, but being this place without a camera tempts me far too much!

Alright so I've had some time to mull over the K-01 and I think it's not ideal as a main body (I see it more suitable as a complimentary body for someone with a primary DSLR, but maybe I'm wrong). The lack of optical viewfinder and WR are big deal breakers, but it's also not suitable for zoom lenses and I like I said, I still want something that is future-oriented (even though I love me some primes and it would be ideal for my 50mm right now).

After reading this thread I'm almost very tempted to grab an older body with the cheap modern nifty fifty (1.8) to eliminate the focus problems we've been hashing out. Is that a dumb idea?

Sounds expensive (the split prism screen). What is it exactly? I've done some looking at the K-30/50 and less so on the KS-1/2 but they are well out of my range. Maybe I ought to consider the K200d?

Sorry for not clarifying a budget (or even the kinds of photos I want to take which is usually helpful). I thought it might be inferred by the models I was considering. I think the maximum I want to go at this moment would be $200 (dare I say in CAD?). As for set of specs I don't have anything specific (not a pun). I did want to make a thread for my own situation just because of the lens. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any places around here that are guaranteed to have a couple older Pentax bodies I could compare. I could definitely go try out new bodies, but that would just make me envious!

I actually took a long break and returned to the forums just to research the K-01 a while ago. My lack of quick reply to this thread was because I saw your comment then went and looked through the whole https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/138-pentax-k-01/205155-lets-see-your-new-k01.html. The 50mm would look great on the K-01 and it would be such an ergonomic set-up compared to the other bodies I've been looking at. The main thing that uninterested me in the K-01 was the lack of built-in optical viewfinder. I know you can get an aftermarket one but it just isn't the same. Seriously considering it now.

Yeah I've always known the K-7 was my frontrunner. Your image quality comment really tempts me on the K-01, but I do really like the traditional SLR layout.

I don't have the budget for the K-3 but thanks for your input on the K-7!

I was intrigued by the K-S1 but it's still out of my budget! I spent enough time away from Pentax news that I was surprised by the existence of the K-S1/2.

The previous thread I linked had me under the impression that the K10D falls under the category of "too old". Obviously there are people that hold the opinion that nothing is too old, and the K10D club is still going strong for good reason. For me the upgrades on the K20D (sensor, ISO, resolution) make it a more viable candidate. I do think the K10/20D would be great to learn on and would make me appreciate a more "feature rich" camera in the future. I almost want to purposely buy a much older body for that reason.

Ah the K-1, but a dream for a guy like me...

Thanks I had no clue about that source, the price seems a bit steep compared to eBay right now though!

Hey guys, before I start I want to say I apologize in advance for creating another advice thread (which you are probably inundated with), but I need some semi-specific advice. Last time I was here (two years ago, yikes) I mentioned I wanted to upgrade to a DSLR body for ease of use and slap my SMC Pentax-A 50mm F1.2 on it. I still haven't gone ahead with it, but I've gotten the bug again and want to make it happen. The only thing significantly holding me back is the low Canadian dollar, even Canadian sellers are asking USD (I don't blame them). Last time, a Pentaxian was nice enough to offer me a deal on a K-5/7, and in hindsight maybe I should have taken it! Because if anything, since then it seems the secondhand market has gotten more slow, and prices have stayed stagnant (or have maybe even gone up).

I guess this is an update to this "how old is too old" thread, which I read quite a while ago and was the only thing I could find similar to the topic.

Originally, my plan was to pick up a super cheap K10D/K100D/ist and their successors but I feel like they are too old by now (even though I'm still very temped by a 20D). I have a terrible case of purchasing products that are above my level because I unnecessarily think about preventing future upgrades, but I've learned that the camera market moves pretty quickly over the years. The K-7 has been the frontrunner (with the ideal K-5 is still out of my price range), but recently the K-r has intrigued me as it has some good stats but goes for much cheaper, am I missing something? Of course it doesn't have WR which was a long necessity for me until I read the thread I linked where someone said even the non-WR Pentax bodies are rugged. It's not like my old 50mm is WR, but a fully WR upgrade in the future would be a consideration. Nevertheless, the K-r is smaller and lighter (because of the lack of WR) which makes it appealing.

Essentially, I'm not looking for fancy features, just plain good old performance (resolution, ISO, FPS, etc.). Something to learn on and put my 50mm to good use with that I won't feel bad leaving around if I get busy. The Pentax equivalent to the Nikon D90 I once had would make me quite happy (or even something less than that). I'm just bummed I can't handle them in real life, compare the button placement and feel of each camera in my hands. That's important to me and would make a decision much easier. So if anyone can give some input, it would be great. It's too soon, but those vintage looking mirrorless cameras are super appealing, maybe I should keep waiting!

Anyway, potentially dumb question but is there anything that would specifically pair well with my 50mm? Or is it a question of opportunity, i.e. what I can find secondhand for the best price as soon as possible?

My Dad was always behind the Pentax and because of it there aren't any photos of him from that time period. Don't forget to get in the shot once in a while too mohb, sometimes being there is more important than the quality of the photo!

It definitely doesn't compare to some of the beautiful stuff posted in here, but here is my inherited LX/50mm 1.2 sitting on my desk at night.

Thanks again guys, I've been looking at the lens review section for hours and still feel like I haven't cracked the tip of the iceberg.

Craig, its nice to see another Pentax shooter from Ottawa. I saw someone shooting a Pentax last weekend, could have been you! I do know about the compatibility of Pentax Lenses/DSLRs which is why I was kicking myself for selling the lenses I had.

Thank you.

3 hours is still pretty far! I'm jealous you're in the Algonquin area, I need to get out there again and bring my camera with me. I enjoy your pictures, and I'm also jealous of that 21mm.

I was pleasantly surprised when I searched up Pentax stuff for the first time on Kijiji. I had no idea there was lots of Pentax stuff and plenty of good deals to be had. I just have to get some research done on older lenses to know what I'm buying and if I'm getting a good deal. Nevertheless, I'll stick with my 50mm for now and I'll definitely be checking Kijiji in the meantime.

Thanks. I'm pretty excited to learn my skills on a film camera. Its just a hassle with getting film/development where I live. There will always be things we let go that we regret. I regret selling that K1000 and learned my lesson too. I'm not letting go of this camera unless it's at the hands of another family member.

Thanks guys!

As a young person I'm not really familiar with older Pentax stuff so after doing some research I was pleasantly surprised when I found out what I had. I really love 50mm lenses and I'm happy to have a nice one.

I definitely wont sell this set-up. I'm going to use it for a while and then maybe grab another used lens or two. I've always wanted a K-5 and now that the K-3 was introduced there will probably be an abundance of used K-5's/II's on the market for a good price. However, that upgrade won't be for a while.

Hey everyone,

I'm a 19 year old student from Ottawa Ontario. I've been reading posts on this forum for a while. Particularly when I thought I was going to purchase a Pentax DSLR body. However, now my time has come to shoot Pentax and I decided to join.

I have a family history with Pentax. My dad always shot with Pentax film cameras, he was definitely a Pentaxian and might have even been on these forums. He had a K1000 with numerous lenses. When he passed I decided I wanted to get into photography. Unfortunately, I sold his kit to fund a Nikon D90 purchase. Some of the stuff got slightly damaged because I shipped it in the midst of a Canadian winter (I guess it was a sign). I definitely regret selling the kit but there is no going back. I was aware of the option to buy a Pentax DSLR body and use his lenses but for some reason I didn't want to do it.

Anyways, I really enjoyed my camera but as a student the time came where I had to sell it to put money towards other things. I was a frequent poster on another photography forum but I quit posting when I couldn't shoot anymore.

I've come to my senses and realized that I want to shoot with Pentax cameras like my father. I got a lucky break earlier this week, a family member was moving and I inherited a Pentax LX with a Pentax 50mm 1:1.2. I think its the last piece of my fathers Pentax collection.

I attached some pictures below of the camera. I apologize for the dark night pictures of the camera. I just need help with identifying the camera better and getting it back in working order. I know I need to give it a good cleaning (it's very dusty), check the batteries, and get some film for it. I'm just aching to get out and take some shots but I've been quite busy.

Apologies for the long post, I just wanted to share my Pentax history with you guys.
