Honestly I don't know why you are so surprised that a manufacture actually cares about its "own" customers. Sigma SA is their mount and they should release any lens for that mount. I don't think they are making money selling SA lenses but at least those lenses don't have any incompatibility problems with their bodies that they should overcome/reverse engineer.
Anyway kudos to Sigma for their attitude towards their loyal customers. I admit I'm a bit tempted by a SD1 Merrill; it's just that used lens market is almost non-existent for SA where I live.

I use Bodhi Linux (based on Ubuntu). Check it out.. it's a very nice distro which has lower requirements and it's bit faster than Zorin.

Lens replacement advice...

The Tamron 70-200 f 2.8 is a very nice lens optically even if a bit on the fragile side; however I think the 70-200 is way over its budget. I would have recommended also the 55-300 if he has been satisfied with the 50-200. As for the 18-135 I have it and want to sell it so you can imagine I won't recommend it even if for a one lens it's ok-ish for its kit-price (way too expensive otherwise). I also think the 16-85 is overpriced for what it offers. For 18-55 replacement I would go with a Sigma or Tamron 17-50 f 2.8 (I personally have chosen Sigma for its better build quality and fast and silent focusing); either one is much better than the kit lens.
Best regards...

Rougechat.. I know that... question is if I really need that. I prefer to leave a good lens on and not change lenses very often.. so I don't have many reasons to change the Sigma to 50 f1.8. I'm not saying it doesn't have its uses.. just that it's not so useful to me.

Actually based on 18-250 and 18-270. But the 18-270 probably cost more because of the super-reliable SDM motor inside.

Yes.. I got it as a B and H bundle with the K-3. It's true I haven't used it at all yet. The thing is Sigma is quite good at 50 mm f2.8, while 50 f1.8 is not great at f1.8 and f2.0 from the tests I've seen; at f2.8 and above it's slightly worse than the Sigma so there's not many reasons to keep it. On the other hand it won't fetch much money so I'll see about it.
I'll post some pictures this weekend taken with my new gear.

I wouldn't say so.. but I may be wrong. I was talking about ergonomics/quality/price. There is no lens I could say it's better than the competition from all Pentax current lenses. And regarding the limiteds... there's a reason why I choose Unlimited ;)
On a more positive note I look forward to new better lenses from Ricoh.
Thank you for the welcome.

I've been looking A LOT during the last few years at almost all Pentax lenses. I agree 31 and 77 are great lenses but they are quite expensive (too expensive I would say). Anyway I'm not really a man of primes.
Case in point I think Sigma 35 mm f1.4 Art is a much better proposition than 31 f1.8 (altough they are not identical in parameters).

I'm not exactly a PRO (I'm being modest.. haha) but that is the point: the K3 with the Sigma 17-50 will be the main camera for events and the K5 secondary (backup) camera that I also use in my spare time; that is when I have the desire to lug it around; mostly I'll carry my Sigma DP2 Merrill with me. I would have loved the Sigma 18-35 but I was put off by by focusing issues reported by many. The other lenses were parts of kits (the 50 and the flash from K-3 and the rest from K-5 II); they are not quite up to the task for what I need; I'll eventually sell them and buy something else.
Best regards...

Thank you for the welcome. I own a 20D and a 40D (though I'd like to sell the 40D). The only keeper of what I have is the Sigma 17-50 (apart from the bodies of course). I really like the ergonomics of Pentax and I find their bodies of higher quality/better price than the competition. Too bad the same is not true about their lenses :(

Thank you for your answer... I own the 18-135 and was considering the 16-85, however I find the 16-85 a bit expensive for what it offers. I too saw the bad corners of 18-135 and if I wouldn't mind that at telephoto but I need good corners on the wide side.

If you don't mind how would you compare the two (16-85 vs 18-135)? I'm sure the 16-85 is better overall if you kept it but do you think it was worth the price difference?
Thank you.

Hi.
I've read a lot on these forums and after keep considering the move to Pentax i finally did it.. and in "big style".. from no Pentax stuff I ended up with a lot of Pentax stuff: a new K-3, an almost new K-5 II, Pentax lenses: 18-55, 18-135 and 50 mm, and a Sigma 17-50. I also own a Pentax AF200FG flash.
Glad to be "onboard".

Pentax-Samsung Collaboration: what happened?

Pentax used in the past Samsung-built sensors. Probably Samsung backed Pentax for supporting their sensors. When Pentax gave up on Samsung sensors so did Samsung on Pentax.

Sigma Telephoto 70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro for Pentax is discontinued

The loss of Sigma lenses for Pentax would be really bad. I hope that's not the case. Most new lenses are available for Pentax mount. There are some FF lens that are not available, but Pentax doesn't have FF cameras. Also those lense are more expensive and it doesn't really make sense to build them for Pentax mount since only a small number would be sold. And since most Pentax users seem to appreciate the light pancakes I don't see that many buying a huge 120-300 f2.8, especially since Pentax had slower focusing system (for sports). I think there would be updates to art/contemporary and the Pentax mount is the first victim.

Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 Coming for Pentax!

I'm with Edgar_in_Indy on his thoughts about Pentax lenses and Sigma 18-35. I'm planning on buying a K-3, but since I couldn't get a better price during Black Friday I postponed the purchase until 18-35 in Pentax mount is available. And while I voted for the K-3 on dpreview best DSLR poll, I voted for Sigma 18-35 as the product of the year. Pentax lenses seem to me overpriced, however that is mostly because of a vicious circle. They cannot lower the price of the lenses because they don't make many (economy of scale) and they cannot make many because they cannot sell them (at those prices). I think Ricoh must break this vicious circle if they are hoping to succeed in growing their market share. If not they will have the fate of many printer makers who sell the printer very cheap but sell the ink way overpriced. Most consumers will just buy ink from other cheaper ink manufacturers.
Returning to Sigma I think their evolution is clearly because of their new CEO, a guy that really knows what he's doing. And regarding the new 50 mm that I'm sure will be awesome I don't think it will be launched for Pentax simply because it's a FF lens and Pentax doesn't have (yet) FF; so although I'm really not interested in FF I hope Ricoh will launch a FF so that I can buy nicer Sigma lenses.

I'm sorry but it is not "normal" and it's a fault (not a property) of a lens. While there aren't perfect lenses that do away completely with CA that picture looks kinda bad from a CA perspective. Your opinion might differ though.

I think it could have something to do with a bad connection on the sensor for green pixels. When you use ISO 1600 probably it starts some NR and maybe some voltages variation on the sensor cause this problem. I'm not sure; I don't think there was anything you could do. Akom seems to have the reverse problem: he's missing blue and red pixels (the numbers of pixels is the same in both cases).
Best of luck to you!

Thank you for the infos. I admit I wanted to buy a SD1 prior to its release; of course after the price was revealed I was horrified.. I think SD1 was the worst camera launch in history (definitely the worst I know of). I suspect the high price it was related to a major problem with sensors yields but still the overpricing was staggering. The prices were so bad that the official importer of Sigma gear in my country has no Sigma cameras for sale.. I don't think they sold any Merrill cameras, only older SDs.
I look forward to newer cameras as I like what the new CEO of Sigma is doing with the company; I also await for my Sigma 18-35 in Pentax mount.

Best regards,
Ciprian
