Male cones of Cedrus libani, about an inch tall.

Latley I have been making short rolls of 35mm, about eight exposures, and developing them in Ilfosol 3 at1:29 for 9 min. That needs only 10 mL of developer for a roll. It worked for this high-contrast subject.

Big aperture lenses have a long light path and the rays get a bit lost when used much closer than designed. I know that this lens doesn't work as well as a real macro lens for very close work such a scanning negatives. At the distance you are using this might be a factor.

There have been many such 135mm 2.8lenses made, popular as they are designed for portraits. If this Sears is like the others you will find it has a bright image with thin depth, and good contrast. It is also likely to show lateral colour and gradual vignetting. Strict image quality is not what they were about.
What they do well is portraits. With the crop sensor you have to get back a ways for head and shoulder shots. Hitting exact focus every time isn't possible. Fortunately with digital we just take extra shots.

There is a calculator at this site that could help in picking a correct focal length for your stand and document size. Using a multiplier of 1.5 for Pentax, it says that with a 50mm lens you would want to be 28 inches back from an 8.5" by 11" page to fill the frame.

Pentax SMC Correction Lens / Diopter for Film SLRs

"That would seem to mean someone with perfect eyesight would need a correction diopter, bizarre. "

Perfect eyes have focusing ability so work fine with the eyepiece as it is. For us old guys with a plastic cataract lens not so much.
Per CarlH above, pick the best glasses at the dollar store, shape one lens to fit, and glue it in. Easy, works great, and costs 50 cents.

The Pentax AF200T flash is handy for this with its four level manual mode.

I'm in with this Chaika and FP4.
This film isn't super fine grain, but as you point out the half-frame has much more area that 110 or disk formats. The grain is never as prominent as I expect.

For economy, the half-frame cameras are suited to using half-rolls of film. Seventy two shots is too many anyway. I want to see what I got before that. After splitting a roll you get 33 or so on each half.

Just this FP4. With a max speed of 1/250 and smallest F of 16, 400 ISO film would be about the limit for full sun, and with half frame you want to keep the grain down.

Model is Chiaka II, before they had meters. Nice and rudimentary and metallic.

When you have the K1 you will have the absolute best hi res slide service yourself, once you also find one of these bellows and slide copier devices. They are suited to full frame cameras. I use the old M42 version II with an adapter. A regular 50 or 55mm lens works with them, but a macro 50F4 is the best.

My MZ-50 has done that. It happens with the cameras of many manufactures'. Battery condition or cold might be a factor. If your film is hand wound, remember to turn the spool clockwise before using it so that the film isn't tightly wound next to the spool.

Of the Pentax M42 primes, there are none to be avoided. The older ones will have old coatings, and there were no high-resolution sensors when they were designed, but we hope for a little character when using them. Also they will screw right onto your Spotmatic.

Just dust on the negatives. Question is whether they got there during processing or while in the camera. Did you scan them yourself?

Colour beam technique

Maybe this method of making selective colour has a real name. It is done by taking three b&w photos, each with the foreground illuminated by a light with red, green, and blue filters. They are then combined in Gimp. The only processing after that is white balance. Any part not hit by the beam is grey, as in the shadow of the balls on the right. This is indoors, so a LED light was sufficient. Outdoors a flash is used.

It's as good as they say for macro, but it's a tessar design. On a full frame camera the drop off in resolution at the sides shows why they have added more elements to lenses since 1902.

It is all just opinion, but I think there is a charm to the blurry foreground in this case, even if that isn't real either. We see real things all day. Sometimes photos are good for being slightly unreal.
