GR II now selling for $500 new. Time to buy?

I had hopes for the GRIII, but the following layout changes were deal-breakers:
- +/- control removed
- 'exposure comp' moved to the ISO Adjust toggle
- ISO moved to 4 way

The GRII allows a user to control all aspects of the exposure triangle + exposure with just the thumb and index finger. The new layout appears to have retained some of that, but it doesn't look as intuitive.

The new sensor will likely churn out a bit more detail, however with it being an equiv. 28mm, I don't see how 16mp was 'dated' and 24mp is 'better'. In body stabilization is neat, but was more of a gripe in movie mode...who uses the GR for video?!?

Some nice tweaks:
- improved AF (although the GRII was still leaps and bounds snappier than the Fuji X100 S/T)
- less minimum focal distance
- I think the lens itself is also improved slightly (maybe just some coatings...)

I think the big wants from the GR Community was improved AF and better Dust/Weather sealing.

Believe me, after being in the Pentax and Olympus systems in the past, I'm not eager to buy back into an ILC, much less a defunct one. I've tried the NX system cameras before and wasn't super impressed. My days of eclectic gear acquisition are behind me, and I'd much rather have something that's simple that I know well and love to shoot...but that still doesn't stop me from looking at weirdo cams like the Sigma Quattros every once in a while...

Just adding my voice to the collective: after being disappointed by the GR III's redesigned controls and higher price, I've also bought a GR II. My GR I still works great (a couple hot pixels on the sensor but no dust near as I can tell), but I really don't want to have to learn a new camera. I've also ordered the GM1, GH3, and GW3 before they become scarce. Last call for an excellent camera at a low price!

Similar to my situation - my 5 yr old GR, while still taking pics, is in need of a good cleaning and some buttons are starting to occasionally stick. I'm very interested in the new GRIII but not sure I want to wait until sometime(?) in 2019 and not sure about spending $900 to $1,000. I took delivery of my new GRii from B&H just the other day and at $499 I have no reason to look back.

A side note, I was curious as to my shutter count and found this quite easy and slick way I've copied from an Instagram post by Ned Bunnell - "Without powering up the camera, select "Movie" mode on the top mode dial. Then simultaneously press the "Playback" and "DISP" buttons. Then use the right 4-way control button to go to the second screen which shows your shutter count." Works like a charm. Thanks to you Ned if you see this.

Well I am extremely happy with the value of mine that cost about the equivalent of $600 a month ago, so I would say $500 is a no brainer.

I've been back and forth whether to pull the trigger on the grII also. I've grown used to SR on my cams so I'm not sure how much I've developed bad habits (prob a lot...). Thing is, this will be my first prime advanced compact so I'm not sure how much I'm going to use it since I've got a lot of other gear that I'm not that bothered with carrying around when I'm going somewhere. Thing is, day to day I miss shots because I'm not always carrying my slingbag. And that's where a cam that is pocketable comes in and why I think the GR series fits nicely. Well sounds like I've talked myself into getting the grii :) this site is EXPENSIVE!!

I would say go for it. It's unlikely that it will go any lower before selling out IMO. $499 is an amazing deal on an amazing camera- even if it's starting to show it's age with that 2013 tech.

As you might remember Mike, I live in Wales.

What have whales in common with Wales? WATER!

American tourist says to local child on the sea front in Aberystwyth "Does it always rain in Wales?", child replies "I don't know I'm only eight years old".

What has the Welsh weather, my Pentax KP and the "Borg" aliens off Star Trek TNG got in common? "Resistance is futile!". ;)

Kai and his squad were the reason I even took the plunge into photography, and Pentax for that matter. I'll be watching him on his new channel since I find him very refreshing compared to other uptight reviewers.

I totally disagree there not being a market for a K mount mirrorless. Their one and only foray was too weird for the market, if they put a normal camera I bet it would be well received.

The colors must always be interpolated. If you take the R, G, and B subimages from a raw and overlay them to create an image of clear colors and half resolution, it looks awful. Tried it.

Doesn't make sense.
The best possible color sensor works with 3 color filters each replicating one of the three human eye's color sensitivities as close as possible. Might work for bee eyes though ;)

That difference is egalized by microlens technology. The net difference will be marginal.

However, BSI diodes have a better angular response curve, even with microlenses. This could help solve the current problems with the corners of wide angle lenses on high resolution mirrorless cameras such like the A7r.

There is no such thing as a 4 stop advantage.

Quantum efficiency (QE) of current sensors already is at 50%, only 1 stop left. Another stop may come by replacing color filters by another technology to register photon wavelength. And that's it.

There are false claims from companies trying to attract venture and stock capital. They are typically based on creation of many electrons per photon. But this doesn't help if you already measure every electron created. QE is the conversion rate of photons to electrons.

Fuji uses this definition:
But without increasing the percentage of photons converted at all, it won't change the image noise. They're cheating and for a reason ...

You're just arguing to be argumentative. This is a different owner. They've said they're going to be the alternative, or third full-line camera maker. They've already done an APSc. They've already done a cropped MF using essentially the same components. Clearly the supposed FF will use essentially the same cmponents as the K-3 and 645Z.

They're releasing clearly FF-capable lenses. They're expanding the APSc line to be a new-buyer attractor and Q line to be a new buyer attractor. They're doing what any serious consumer products company does to develop its products and lines.

They're using different words and doing different things and saying things in a different way than they have for all those past years you referred to. Perhaps you haven't watched and listened long enough to sense the change.

I think they have the camera essentially ready to go. I think now they're arranging the component supplies and the production facility.

The key is, neither of us has any real basis to make informed statements about whether or not they're going to make a FF camera, so why make such a big deal if those of us who think they are going to discuss the changed tone? What difference does it make to you that you have to be right about them NOT making one? What can you possibly get out of insisting I and others like me are wrong? Why are you so certain you know more than experienced interviewers writing articles with a Byline?

Really - what, precisely do you get for making these posts?

@Bobdobbs -- Yeah, search is your best friend in some forums, because there will always be people that want to come after you for repetitive stuff. So to make amends for your gross misdemeanor, I think you should probably buy me two of those three lenses. But only two, because, well...three would be greedy ;)

Regarding your original post, like the others have said, if they are K mount, I'm sure they'll look really nice mounted on my K-50 :)
