I have always been curious about that lens, it's suppose to have a lot of character.

Possibly :)
I could have written above, that in some cases the Pentax lineup is actually unique. In particular for medium tele prime lenses, not all companies have something like the DA* 200 and 300.

The lineup is fairly complete, not many things missing! So slow and steady updates make more sense than releasing a slew of niche items which won't justify the R&D costs. Especially for APS-C, but also for FF, the lineup covers most bases.
That's true of any brand.

I find it funny that people would blame the OS when it's clearly a series of hardware problems.
It's also funny when people compare a "Nokia" (which nowadays is a rebranded Chinese knockoff of whatever) to a high-end product from a competitor and assume it's a fair comparison. It wouldn't be any fairer to compare this Nokia to a top-of-the-line Samsung or Pixel.
The only "problem" with Android is that, since it's open, anyone can make phones running the OS, so you can get crappy or stellar products. Like with anything, you get what you pay for.

That's a good point. Probably that the Backlight could be a worthy option for this longer lens.

Aperture blades will influence, among other things, bokeh, especially the rendering of out-of-focus highlights. All things being equal, more blades generally lead to highlights closer to a sphere, more pleasing to the eyes.

This is an old thread, but with newer comments.
Since I discovered hand straps, I have almost never used a neck strap. BUT I couple the hand strap with a Peak Design Capture Clip, so that when I don't hold the camera in hand, it is secured to either my body or my bag. With young children I have realized that a neck or shoulder strap makes the camera dangle everywhere all the time. The hand strap takes much of the weight off my hand, it is an added security when holding the camera, and it slides in in a second.

We're talking about the HD FA 35 which is newer, even though base on that old design indeed.

Sorry about that.
We, as shown in my in-depth review of the 31 (I have not tested the FA 35) the 31 is sensitive to CA and PF: SMC Pentax-FA 31mm F1.8 AL Limited Review - Aberrations | PentaxForums.com Reviews
However, I would say that even just by looking at your out of focus highlights test shots, the 31 shows how different it is relative to either 35. Circular highlights will lead to better transitions, among other things. You also mention corner sharpness. There is also microcontrast, color rendering, center sharpness, uniformity, so many things which make or break an image.

the takeaways for me are
1-the HD and SMC Fa 35 are similar, which is to be expected.
2-the 31 is better able to preserve the spherical shape of the aperture. Also to be expected
3-the 31 is worse for purple fringing. Not too surprising, it's an older design.
you can see comparable information in in-depth lens reviews. I haven't tested the FA 35mm however.

I have worked for the Canadian Ministry of Defence also ;) It's not a critic of how military expenses are made or projects are run, but it's vastly different to design a highly specialized tool with few units made and to mass-market a camera with cost as an important driver.

It's not "can we make it", it's "can we mass produce it at a low cost". Military expenses are never a reasonable baseline ;)

I believe the main challenges are the WHY of design choices, as first mentioned by CristiC, and the availability of parts. If the parts don't exist anymore, solutions will have to be created.

I'm sorry, I should have noticed that you had the VND. Its front is indeed larger. I'm not very good with filter acronyms. Good that you have this sorted out. The good news is that the 72mm cap can be used when there is no filter.

Agreed. The Monochrome is probably the biggest driver there, it was a sound decision to release that product. It's doing very well in Japan, and is often back-ordered in other areas of the world. A careful and steady release of high-end lenses will make sure the K-mount remains interesting, if not fast-paced.

That is my main takeaway from using these filters.
It probably depends on the specific snap-on cap, mine have had no problems so far. The "teeth" might not always extend very far depending on the model.

I agree, the product photos are horrible! I remember having seen other pictures of this at some point, and it at least looked like a true Swarovski "something". Here it looks like it's covered in plastic Diamond Dots.

Correct, it doesn't exist for Pentax.
Your best bet is either to find a version 1, or to get the X2T. Functionally it's the same, with the added benefit of having a hotshoe on the trigger, but with a smaller screen and fewer buttons. The XPro has a button layout mostly similar to a Godox speedlight, the X2T doesn't.
Another option (more expensive but more versatile) is to get any Godox speedlight and use it as a trigger.

You have some great pictures to share!
I'm a bit late to reply, but here's my take anyway.
The 28-105mm is often seen as a no-brainer for the K-1. It,s a great lens.
The newly released D FA 21mm Limited (not the DA, which is for APS-C) is an astounding lens, but pricey. If you can justify it, it's amazing.
If you can find an FA 20-35mm used, it's a very popular lens. I never warmed up to it, but that's just me.
The F and FA 28mm are also well liked, available used. The Fa is sharper, the F creates more beautiful starbursts.
You can get an F 35-70mm for a song, it's not the best range but that lens is better than it has any right to be.
