Architecture Opera House - not a tourist's perspective

Thanks goosey. If I'm ever near the Opera House when it's darker then I might try a longer shutter speed - in broad daylight that's pretty much impossible.

Life has been super hectic so I haven't been able to post for a while, but here goes.

On the weekend, I went to the city. As in Sydney. I haven't actually been near the Opera House after I got my camera (unless you count two days after) just over a year ago, so it was interesting to be able to take a few shots on Sunday. I couldn't take a lot, because I had a group of non-photographers with me, but I tried exploring some different perspectives nevertheless.

Nice little story/poem, and some great photos. I really like the first one - it's a shame the houses are a little blurry/distracting but the silhouette and the rainbow are great.

I haven't done a lens review at the end of a Single In month before, but seeing as I'm taking a break for September, I figured I may as well here.

So.. the Travelling Industar....

Well, it's a standard focal length, and one which I've done I think 3 or 4 consecutive photo challenges with? So although I'm comfortable with the focal length, it's getting a little, well, boring. So that might explain my missing of about half the days last month (hold on, guys, I'm about to post my photos for the 24th, 28th, 30th and 31st. I'll get there one day!!). Another thing that made me less expressive than usual this month was the minimum focusing distance. Now THAT was a big draw back. It meant my simple "well I'll just focus on this and have some nice bokeh back there" method of finding something interesting to shoot did not usually work. As a huge bokeh lover, this really limited my photography.

I found I ended up trying quite a few HDRs this month; probably because the lens doesn't have as nice colours as Pentax lenses, and also quite a few panoramas; I guess I'm ready for a wider angle.

Anyway, enough complaining. What I DID like about the lens:
- It's tiny size! Totally adorable, and, well, pretty handy on a hike where you don't want to carry much.
- It's bokeh. Not bad, quite smooth and pleasing at times, I was pretty happy.
and.. uhh... well..... I don't know what else. It was nice, for a change, but I am ready to move on to something else, to say the least. (although it IS still mounted on my camera and I shot with it today...)

So yeah, an interesting lens, good for a travelling one: I wouldn't keep it if I owned it but it's completely fine, for a month.

And here's the rainbow of this morning, yes I know that's not Single In August but oh well.

PS - Please, can somebody (preferably in Australia ;) ) put up their hand for next on the list for the travelling Industar? I don't want to hold on to this forever...

It's been six months straight and for September I want to take just one thing out of the busyness of daily life (I mean I think I missed most of the days last month).

Haven't even finished uploading from August, since flickr doesn't seem to work for me right now?! (Invalid url message)

Oh, and if anyone wants to use the Industar Lens next, I'd be happy to ship it off to you, especially if you're in Australia ;)

Really amazing work everyone. You all set a great example for the rest of the Pentax community! I find B&Ws extremely tough, so maybe I'll learn something from all your great photos. It's very hard to choose a winner amongst these awesome photos, but I think I've chosen my winner. Though any of them deserve to win IMO.

Yes, worst for me too. I've missed probably 10 days + :(

Yes, I've been doing some language stuff too, but haven't seemed to have had a lot of time for either languages or photography recently :o Or any other of my hobbies now that I think about it! What language(s) are you studying?

That's really cool. I've definitely felt the now 5 months I've been doing Single Ins has certainly improved my photography.

PS Tsuken if you see this I sent you a PM re the industar lens. It hasn't arrived yet.

Thanks for everyone's responses.
Unfortunately none of the options sound great and/or worth their while, so I think it is easier and more beneficial (even if I'm not getting the money) just to sell the lens.
Thanks for all your ideas though!

Wow! This is great. Those contrasting colours are absolutely fantastic. The sharpness is exceptional. I love the movement captured in the sea. Well done and good luck!

From your photos it looks like a good lens. Is this a travelling lens? I'll join the queue of Aussies if that's possible.

When my grandfather heard I was into photography, he showed me some of his old film stuff. Minolta stuff. I thought nothing of it - I mean it was interesting to see, but none of the gear could fit my camera anyway. He said that I could have his extra lens if it fit my camera, which it didn't, of course. Just for fun I decided to look up the lens - a Minolta 250mm f5.6 mirror lens. His copy was in absolute mint condition, only being used a couple times previously. And it's been selling on eBay for over $1000!!!

So the deal is, I can keep the lens if I can find a way to adapt it, otherwise I'm selling it for him. Of course I know which option I prefer, but I really don't think there's a way to adapt, and if there was I'm sure quality would be lost.

So just wondering if any of you know of a way to adapt the RF mount lens to PK? Or if there would be a way to adapt to PQ if I bought one of those (that wouldn't be any time too soon anyway)? Or can you have multiple adapters together to adapt?

Thanks. I doubt there's any way, but thought it would be worth asking.

Oh, interesting. For some reason I thought it was a night shot - I guess I don't usually see clouds like that during the day! Well if it's the sun, that's even harder to properly expose!

Sounds interesting, by the rule of thirds I was meaning if you went back you could just point the camera at a slightly more downward facing angle. But great work!
Maybe one day I'll get Lightroom and Photomatix.. but first on my camera wish-list are a lot more lenses ;)
Good luck with future HDR/photography :)

Sorry to see no one else has nominated yet!
I really love this shot, so I will nominate and comment.
I have never succeeded with HDR and think you've done a really great job. The colours captured here are absolutely spectacular and although I haven't zoomed in this photo looks pretty sharp throughout as well.
I also really like your choice of composition with the powerful sky making a great appearance over the hills/mountain areas and town. What are those objects on the hills in the top left? I probably would have slightly lowered the view to make the sky about 1/3 instead of just over and to use the rule of thirds.
As I said earlier - these colours really grab my attention - very wonderful work. Looks like a very interesting area - so many things to look at in the photo with the boats, buildings, etc. etc.
You've done really well and I love this shot.
PS - how much do Photomatix and Lightroom cost? (not that I could afford them unless they were ~$5 which of course they're not) Photoshop HDR just isn't working for me.
