Pop Photo K20d review

Doh ... think about it for just one second. That AF system is in my GX-1S and the K100D yet the K10D focus' faster than them. Some of it is related to the torque and speed of the motor doing the focusing which will be in turn affected by the power source eg My GX-1S focus' faster with CR-V3's than it does with NiMh - well at least the motor sounds like it is turning faster and it appears that other forum posters have come to this conclusion

Not only that by I defy anyone to be able to get the same times down to a hundredth of a second from the same camera let alone different cameras !! It just isn't scientifically probable !

I've got the GX-1S ... The only downside I feel is that Samsung have been slow to bring out the firmware updates compared to Pentax.

"Better" is subjective ... if you don't use slow sync flash mode the Auto and Av modes will be assuming that the flash is the main/only source of light and, as others have said, that there will be enough power in the flash (in a big room such as those soft play areas even a 540 may have problems) so it uses a shutter speed designed to prevent hand held camera shake effects ie 1/focal length. If you use slow sync it slows the shutter speed down ... on the GX-1S/DS/K1x0D range you can't use slow sync in Av mode so I have to use full manual or Tv BUT I'm not sure with the K10D since it has an explicit slow sync flash mode ... you'd need to check your manual.

I must admit I don't see why the program lines default to 1/focal length since in flash photography the flash freezes the motion rather than the shutter speed so hand held blur shouldn't be an issue, do the other brands flash operation (without slow sync) in auto modes work in the same fashion ?

Totally expected behaviour Program and Av modes will always select a shutter speed that is 1/focal length when the flash is up if you've not selected slow sync. If you have s.s on then it will expose for the ambient light. It is all in the manual.

1. Are you using the popup flash ?
2. Are you using "slow sync" flash mode.

Look I'm just a beginner and I've been fighting with flash over the holiday season but look at the exif data and have a think about the settings that are being used. At a guess you are looking at a light level between EV5 and EV7 (basic artificial light indoor scene) meaning without flash your kit lens is going to need something in the order of 1/8 to 1/4 of a second - the last photo (in the second batch) is f5.6 1/60 at 55mm using Av mode. In the size of place that a lot of those photo's were taken the popup flash won't make a dent. I doubt even the 540 would do you much good.

I've found with flash using Tv mode is far better that way you can control the shutter speed to get as much ambient light as possible. In my camera I have to but you've got "slow sync" mode on your flash.

As for the last 2 images I'd say the difference is due to the guy at the end in the second photo making a gap.

I wondered if it was the built in flash at 55mm on the kit lens and not using slow sync flash mode. Not only not enough power in the flash to start with but the p-ttl cutting it out due to the reflections from the foil and then without the slow sync flash P and Av modes would have a shutter that is about 1/80 which would be far to fast for the kit lens in that lighting.

I've recently been fighting to get similar shots of my kids using the flash on my GX-1S and finally read my manual enough times that I understand how the slow sync flash works on my camera (my ghads it is a cumbersome way to do it - I'm considering upgrading to the K10/20D just to get a dedicated slow sync flash mode)

Which Holster Bag?

No shoulder strap I'm afraid ... it does have a small loop for hand carrying and I've often looped the waist belt over my shoulder.

I bought it mail order sight unseen ... not much on shop shelves in Scotland so I've not got a comparison ... I wasn't really interested in the Offroad since I only had the 2 lenses and got a free Offroad sized bag (shoulder strap only) with the camera kit and I was looking for minimum size.

I've got the Offtrail 1 and love it. The main pocket fits my GX-1S with the 50-200 as long as the hood is reversed. The side pods are long enough to fit the 50-200 with the lens hood extended. I use the second pocket for an A50 plus the body cap(which I use for wb) and memory cards. There are 2 elastic loops in the main compartment on the "back" of the camera support pads which I use to hold a spare set of batteries and a lens cloth sits in the bottom of the main compartment. The pouches are part of the sliploc system so you can fit these if you want. A bigger option more pockets but similar could be the "Off Road"

Like davemdsn said you need to "render standard previews" You can also do this at import by ticking the "render standard previews" in the information to apply panel of the import dialog box.

Sorry but I believe that jfdavis58 is right in what he said, he just didn't elaborate much.
Your monitor and printer probably shouldn't be using the aRGB colour profile since they should have their own unique profiles, unless or course they are specifically designed to use aRGB . In fact your monitor profile will be different depending on the lighting in its location and it would be rare for 2 monitors under the same lighting to use exactly the same profile, and the profile for your printer will depend on the ink and the paper. aRGB and ProPhoto are working space profiles not display or print profiles ... in the majority of cases ... perhaps your printers ink and paper combination just happens to be aRGB ? Methinks you may need to re-read guidlines 1 and 2 from UPDIG.
Just to clarify I say this not as an expert in the field but someone who works in IT and has recently spent a lot of time sorting through the missinformation on the internet trying to understand this colour space stuff. So I could be totally wrong in my understanding of colour spaces or I could be missinterpreting what you are saying ... in which case feel free to ignore me ;)
But from the way jfdavis58 writes I wonder if he works in an area that deals with this stuff ... in which case he'd be classed as an expert and you'd be well advised to listen ... colour spaces are a black art ;)

All that said ... if it works for you (ie your prints match your screen which matches the original scene) then who cares if it's not the proper way of doing it.

With the extra loop it looks very much like the Nikon AH4 hand strap (which has a thread in its base part for a tripod)

Shooting Raw with Pentax as a Matter of Fact

Whoa there cowboy ... The OP's first post suggested that using RAW should be done as a matter of course if you do any serious amount of PP. He made no comments on colour spaces until asked what RAW format he used, and even then he only said what he did. He made no pretence of instructing people how to use colour spaces or even how to do RAW conversion. Obviously both these operations require proper research before being able to complete them competently.

I'm aware that you have a problem with benjikan but this obvious animosity towards is getting tiresome. While I may find benjikan's "full on" nature a little too much for me at times I appreciate he is trying to share his techniques with others, and unlike some of the junk that can be found on the web his techniques have the benefit of being used in a "Pro" environment. That is not to say that others can't do it better or that you may not like some of what he does, but please give your hate campain a rest.

New fimware for Samsung GX series Cameras

No .... for 2 reasons ...
1) The Pentax equivalent cameras are DL2 DS2 or K10D
2) The camera checks the firware to see if it is for that model it wont update from the "wrong" file. Some brave fool tried this on his GX-1S when the DS/DL updates came out last year.

For all you Samsung users out there, they have finally released new firmware for all the GX cameras.

The GX-1S and I assume the GX-1L adds support for sdhc cards and the GX10 one looks like it is the equivalent of the Pentax 1.11

You are joking right ???

Thanks to Vista on new boxes I've seen RAID arrays not working properly, USB2.0 controlers not working, slow copying ... to name just a few, add to that the deliberate crippling of systems during "Premium" content (read DVD's etc) that can cause problems from reduced quality to it not even playing ... I'll be switching to OS X next time I need a new computer.

GX10 - k10d differences

Sorry ... this is one incident and I see nothing there that is conclusive ... too many variables and not a big enough sample size.
Again the Pentax dedicated Metz that I have works with my GX-1S and the hotshoe layout will be the same as the GX10's since they both use the same Samsung flashes. So again I doubt it is hardware ... that leaves either the Firmware in the flash or the firmware in the camera.
Though I did get the symptoms described in that thread once ... it was when the camera was on when I attached the flash and it appeard to get well confused ... The power on sequence must be camera then flash.

However I will admit that it does look less likely that they work together. I might see if I can try a pentax flash on my GX-1S if I can find one in my local Jessops... while not conclusive if it worked it would suggest, at least to me, a specific (to that persons flash and camera) problem rather than a general compatability issue, but again too many variables to be conclusive. To do it properly I'd want to try the flash with a GX10 but since Jessops don't sell GX10's I'd not be able to try that.

Edit :-
OK just re-read the Amateur Photographer review of the GX10 and he states that he tries it with the Pentax flash and battery grip and both worked properly.

That would cost too much in terms of manufacture.
Besides the Metz 40Mz-2 and 3701 foot (ie pentax TTL) that I have works fine on my GX-1S.

My GX-1S does the same thing ... the meter will only show the reading that it can take ... It can't really know anything about how the flash will effect the exposure until it is fired.
