Sony A9 Officially Announced Today

Still has the 'Star Eater' problem, according to astro photographers on the Interwebs, so Sony continues to massively doctor the RAW files to seem better in comparison tests.

It's getting very VW like.

Sony A9 Officially Announced Today

Sure, but odds are that DXO Mark is testing these cameras in a climate controlled setting and not leaving them on for 20 minutes before they start testing. It would be interesting to know how performance would change when the sensor is pressed a bit.

SNR on the 24 megapixel sensor in the A7 II actually isn't that much worse as well, it seems to track about the same as the A9. It is just the dynamic range that the A9 does better at in settings of iso over 1600.

Fuji GFX useage compared to 645Z

I tried the GFX today and here are my thoughts:

- it's light, but feels unbalanced compared to the Z
- it does not sit in the hand as well as the Z. It's harder to keep a solid hold on than the Z is. The weight is behind the grip, not in front of it.
- it does not feel lighter than the Z really. It is lighter but not noticeable in use.
- grip is not as comfortable
- the rear thumb dial is in the wrong position, should be moved to the left because when you turn it to the right with your thumb, your thumb hits the protruding grip part on the right side. It was a real PITA.
- AF is nothing special with the 63mm lens
- overall feel is not as good as the Z, feels somewhat toy like but still good.
- EFV is great, wish the Z had an option for this
- 5 shutter options are excellent, wish the Z had them
- after-shot lag is terrible in EVF, so slow, you just get a black screen for a couple of seconds after the shot
- the 120 macro is freaking huge and heavy, really off putting and unbalanced
- 120 macro AF seemed fast and OS was good.
- tilt screen seems like it would be easy to break

I can see why it's getting traction though. If you had not shot a Pentax 645, the feature set of the GFX would seem very compelling.

After using it the salesman was waiting with baited breath for my praises but I just said I was surprised that it wasn't as good as I had hoped.

I am glad it's out because Pentax will have to raise their standards. Things like Fujis careful attention to the various shutter modes and the EVF are a real boon.

Good to know, but your constant nagging and negativity is getting you very close to the ignore button.

Do your really think the 31LTD is the only lense i tested on the KP? Really  It was the 31 on that specific picture..But I've tested almost every lense in my arsenal on the KP. I also have 2 K-1, 2 K-3II and 2 K-3 in my bag..do you really think i dont test thing properly? Get real!!

People can pixelpeep on a screen and read about stuff as much as they want. I hardly ever care about that. I test stuff in real life..Best way to figure out whats working and not :) And i try to share it with you guys.

Let it also be said, that I'm not signed by Ricoh at all for testing stuff and be available for users at all..But still i use a lot of time doing this in me free time. But people that that ogl caracter make me dont want to waste more of my free time...

Only task i have in my contract, is to sell in the brand to new people, and specific pros i meet in the industry.

I tested KP on a concert yesterday. Not FW1.0 on yet, but i can already notice an improvement from the K-3 :)

Lightning was bad and I'm not allowed to share High Res or RAW before FW is final (will still be a few improvements).

Thank you :)

There is stuff I'm not happy about with Pentax, but when it comes to the most important thing..Picturequality..Pentax is top notch! And on my issues, thats stuff that getting a bit better all the time. But there is stuff my CaNikon colleagues struggle with too..So i guess there is not a camera out there that will satisfy you 100% But you have a point, there is a lot of nonsense out there...Many people can't understand why i dont use Canon/Nikon/Sony..Since i suppose to be a pro..But my pictures shot them up most times

Pentax 31/1,8 Or Sigma 35/1,4 Art?

My personal approach in building a lens collection is to go for broad coverage with fixed f/2.8 (in other words, BIG) zooms, and to provide nuance with small primes with special qualities.

The FA31 fits in nicely with that philosophy, the Sigma Art 35/1.4 does not.

Image noise in DSLRs and mirrorless cameras...

Very interesting article, thank you!

This is an important subject in astrophotography where exposures can be several hundred or even thousand seconds long.
Stargazerslounge.com for example has several discussions about this topic.

I made very similar observations like yours with my cooled canon 1100D sensor (watercooled peltier cooling to approx. 20 degrees C below ambient during 600s exposures) but i am puzzled by the high amount of red channel noise in the first -5C exposure.
Noise reduction in the red channel is what all the sophisticated cooling is for. I guess the sensor heated up very fast during the 30seconds exposure without active cooling but why is there lower red channel noise in the following 20C exposure?
Maybe Sony and Canon sensors behave different in this regard?

The rule of thump says noise doubles every temperature rise of 7C and the sensor heats up to 35C above ambient during long exposures. But this is from years ago and applies to canon sensors which were used almost exclusively in the DIY astrophotography community.

Fujifilm X-T1

Let me say first that I have a Pentax K3 and love it. But I lusted after the X-T1 and finally bought one and a 23mm f1.4 XF lens. The surprising thing is, the new camera has made me appreciate the K3 even more.

The X-T1 is a very good camera and I wish that Pentax had a decent mirrorless option. The X-T1's EVF is quite good and the image quality, build quality and lenses are very good.

If I could marry the Pentax firmware, menus and ergonomics with the X-T1 size and mirrorless advantages, it would be a killer machine. Actually, there is only a 300gram (roughly) penalty with the K3, but it's a rugged beast that you know you're not likely to damage easily. I suppose the larger lenses (because of the longer flange focal distance) add even more heft which meant the last time I traveled it was with a Fuji X100 and not the K3.

The short story here is that while I really like the Fuji X-T1, I won't be getting rid of the K3 anytime soon. And for what it's worth, I think the APS-C size sensor/lens combo makes much more sense to me than chasing the upcoming Pentax FF DSLR. I really hope that Pentax has a mirrorless development strategy that is serious and not driven by a graphic design imperative.

How to find detailed information about advanced settings?
Posted By maxxxx

Just got my K-3 and so far I like it. It feels like a K-5ii with everything done better plus useful features from the K-30 (focus peaking).

But I am really confused about the advanced settings of the camera. I have a rough idea what they do but it's hard to tell what they really do and what potential side effects they have.

Examples:
- HDR. It looks like the K-3 takes HDR images in RAW. How does that compare to bracketing and then doing HDR with software?
- What do Highlight And Shadow Correction really do? Are they useful when you shot in RAW?
- What do the High ISO and Low Shutter Speed do? Do they provide an advantage over noise reduction with software?
- What does "Hold AF status" do exactly? are there examples showing the behavior?

There are plenty more settings I wonder about. For Nikon and Canon it's usually possible to find articles and videos on the web but the K-3 I haven't had any luck finding anything.

Does anybody know how to find more info? Is there an expanded/detailed manual somewhere?

Not really:

Yesterday, near my house, in very big city - Los Angeles, CA. BTW: the body is very sharp including an eye. It did lose some appeal due the downsizing, etc. However, the wings are too blurry to my taste.
