My part of Northwestern Arizona is well-known for brilliant and amazing sunsets, but the sunrises can be just as amazing when caught at just the right time with our distinctive Black Mountains in the foreground. This was one of my first-ever sunrise shots, and the results have prompted me to spend more time shooting in the early morning, to capture more images that showcase the distinctive buttes for which the American Southwest is famous. The bushes in the immediate foreground are close, about 100 meters away, while the mountains are several miles distant, but this image makes them look like they're contiguous. "Here comes the sun, doot-n-doo-doo..."

Here's my entry for the Dominant Color competition, showcasing the vivid orange shades of the clouds as the sun sets over the Dead Mountains in the Colorado River Valley, where Arizona, California and Nevada meet. Spectacular, fiery sunsets like this one are common here, especially in the summer and fall.
I took this photo right around the time I first joined the Pentax Forum, in November of 2013, and I'm glad to finally find a contest I think its content is suited for!

Was hiking through the Mojave Desert near my home in Northwest Arizona and shot this "self-portrait," then played around in Photoshop to make this colorful shadow art.

This is among the best carnival light shots I've seen in a long while. I hope it wins an award!

I love shooting carnival light, and this is a really great image showing motion and the lack thereof in a single frame. It deserves an award!

I was making my special balsamic vinegar salad dressing and couldn't help myself from photographing the vivid yellow olive-oil bubbles floating in the red vinegar, along with sprinkles of dried oregano, basil and other herbs. It was hard to stop shooting long enough to actually serve the stuff! I may not play with my food, but I make it feel special by photographing it often.

Pentax is the original "old school" to me...when I got my first job as a newspaper reporter back in 1983, they handed me a K1000 and taught how to wind my own Tri-X. I'd make the rolls as long as would fit in the canister without scratching the emulsion, sometimes 50 to 60 frames, and shoot 'til it was done. I used to love processing film, now I love photoshop. I've owned Kodak, Pentax and Nikon point-and-shoot digital cameras, and killed them all through wear and tear and shooting in extreme conditions, but when I did the research on my first DSLR, Pentax was miles ahead of the pack. My friend bought the comparable Nikon and I discovered his only has 3 points for autofocus, while my K10 has 11! It's a little heavier and bigger, but that's a worth-while trade-off. Given my penchant for macro, I need a lot of options, I'll go with Pentax again when I buy a DSLR that has video capture,

All three images are great! I really like the tiny cricket, and I've never seen green ones in the "wild" - here they're tan or light brown and some have those same thin stripes. Guess that's because they live in the desert and need to blend into sand rather than forest. Appreciate your work!

I love Joshua Tree, I live about two hours away (to the east) and haven't been there for a couple of years...thank you for the images! I really like the first one, I love this method or capturing motion in still photography. Looks like you had a great time!

Great subject, this could be from last week or 50 years ago. Black-and-white photography always has that timeless feel. I think you did a great job on the editing.

I could stare at flowers for hours - and shoot hundreds of images:lol:. The colors and textures in macro photos have a way of evoking feelings in me.
PAINTED DAISIES: The daisies, which I found in a local supermarket, look like they're painted. Maybe they are, or they're artificially dyed; either way, I love the range of hues and the dew drops.
VELVET ROSE: I see fine, folded velvet fabric when I look at the close-up section of a deep pink rose. I shot this at dusk in a neighbor's front yard. I can often be seen tramping through fields and yards to get to flowers, I just can't help myself! I never, ever pick them.

Thanks for asking...I dug out a couple more shots of Swansea, although the first one is my favorite. The town had an interesting history; it grew fast, burned bright, burnt out quickly, and almost nothing's left. You can imagine ghosts might about when you're out there in stillness among the ruins.

The remains of the quarters that housed workers who made their living smelting copper in Swansea, Arizona, circa 1895. Each year the ghost town dimishes from natural and man-made decay; it is located about 40 miles east of Parker, Arizona, which is on the Colorado River. Swansea was a metropolis in the late 1800s, complete with electric lights, telegraph and an automobile dealership. The town's demise was caused by the declining price of copper; by 1910, it was a ghost town. It was a long, hot trek by Jeep to see this crumpling wonder, but well worth it.
