Expensive 2CR5? No problem..

Here's a solution for those expensive 2CR5. In my part of the world, the battery costs more than an old film camera. There's a workaround though..

1. Here's a regular 2CR5

2. You see, a 2CR5 is really just 2 CR123As in series enclosed in a case.

3. Slide in the batteries. Note that if the label is +, then the + side of the battery goes in first. Likewise for the -.

4. Take a piece of aluminum foil and fold it up.

5. Place the foil onto the battery terminals to short them. Then stuff something into the empty space so the batteries have firm contact with the leads. I recommend an eraser.

6. It lives!

I don't have to mention how cheap CR123As are. However, take caution though. The CR123A batteries must be both of the same charge level, otherwise the stronger one will overheat. Overloaded lithium batteries are nasty. Your camera might go Ka-Boom instead of Ka-chak..

I think they've been spooked by Fujifilm. There would be a lot of catching up to do. To start with, they would really need to get SR into it.

But anyway, they would not compete in compactness, so what is there that they could bring to the table that would make make it the MF of choice?

Including the AF assembly in a camera that's designed for MF sounds like a lot of money down the drain. I don't think many would switch back and forth considering the likely cost of the job.

Like shutter speed and focus, then, it should be a feature you can turn off if you don't want it and on if you do.

Normal K-3III with its AF intact won't go anywhere, it's still the main product without sacrificing anything regardless of the variants.

However, if enough people are willing to pay, this will be produced no matter what non-buyers will think about it, even if these non-buyers are a super majority. That's the beauty of this kind of projects on crowdsourcing platform. If they think they can make money that way, more powers to them! I don't mind them making whatever variants they'd like to make even if some or even all of them don't interest me personally.

I think this seems more suited for K1, keeping the originally intended FOV of all those old film MF lenses. I would be very intrigued...

About the new custom image "Satobi".
I forgot to discuss this one in the previous post.
Devs said this is the polar opposite of "Miyabi" ("Vibrant" in English menu). "Taste of film from 60's and 70's."
Maybe you're like "meh, another SOOC jpeg setting" but many were super excited in the comment section. I think that there are many more jpg shooters in Japan than US and Europe. Anyway, as somebody who prefers RAW shooting, I have to say I'm impressed by this one.

Since they allowed "pictures of the meeting" (but no video capturing) I made some screen shots. Attached first is one of the example shots by Shin-ichi Hanawa, the second one by Keita Sasaki, two pros who discussed this new custom image. Sorry these were captured on my laptop over ZOOM, not the best in quality but you can see what they meant by "film from 60's and 70's", probably better quality ones will be released by Ricoh.

Devs also said that another enhancement in the new FW is that the tone curve will be displayed in custom image menu except for "cross process" and "reversal film" (3rd attachment).

Bulb. Written "ba-ru-bu" (in katakana), but the translator isn't aware of the context to transform it into the obvious photographic term.

I suppose it does a standard longish exposure to be able to get trails - this fits with the recommendation for O-GPS in case of wide angle (the degree of movement would require a much longer exposure to start computing).

This is brilliant if they get it to work well. It also begs the question of "why has no one else with IBIS done this", but I'm not complaining that Pentax is first :p:p

I attended the Pentax Meeting today. It was a fan event to celebrate the 102nd anniversary of the brand. I just have time to write a post about a part of it right now, so I’ll focus on the part about the evolution of the K-3.

This actually consisted of two elements - firmware and ideas for future variants.

New firmware coming on December 7 (also for K-1 and K-1 II)
They have developed a new custom image profile called “satobi”. This was created partly to cater to the tastes of users overseas. They said the way it was developed was a little different from previous profiles. It’s a nostalgic image quality from the 60s-70s. It looks really nice. Made by looking at old images from overseas photographers and trying to replicates some of the more muted colors characteristic of pictures from the 60s and 70s. Then a couple of pro photographers came on to present some images shot with this profile. I know there are a lot of raw users who aren’t interested in the JPEG profiles, but this one is really nice and natural looking. I think a lot of people will appreciate it.

New firmware coming spring 2022 - Add Astrotracer to K-3 Mark III (not K-1 or K-1 II this time)
(Note: This was difficult to understand, but I’m 80% sure this is what he said) The K-3 III developer described Shigeru Wakashiro explained that the problem with Astrotracer is having to do the calibration each time. Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to use Astrotracer without doing that? Well it seems that they have figured out a way to do Astrotracer not only without calibration, but also without the need for GPS at all. This prompted a lot of wows from the participants, but it seems that the firmware update will just add Astrotracer without any need for extra hardware. There was not actual details of how this will work. It seems that test firmware will be released much sooner than that, but I’m afraid I couldn’t understand whether that meant anyone would be able t download it and try it out. Incidentally, they confirmed that this would not be coming t any other existing models, and also that the OGPS-2 accessory is still in the pipeline for next year.

Future K-3 III variants
This was unusual. Wakashiro-san described six ideas for variants on the K-3 III and wanted to get feedback on them.
1. K-3 III Jet black - All black, almost like one of those computers keyboards with no markings at all
2. K-3 Shutter change model - A variant with a different feel to the shutter release
3. K-3 III Monochrome - No bayer filter model
4. K-3 III MF - Manual focus model, no AF sensor, 30% brighter VF, AF still possible in live view
5. K-3 III Gun metal - Basically like the K-3 prestige editions, with customizable markings on the prism, such as the AOCO mark
6. K-3 III Astro - Sensor filter changed to enable better astro photography (like other brands do)
They had a poll of attendees to see idea which sounds most attractive, and the two winners were the monochrome and the jet black model. But most ideas had their supporters. Some of them might be available as upgrades/mods for existing users (1, 2, 5). It’s also possible that they might use Kickstarter to gauge interest (note that Pentax did that successfully with a novel pair of binoculars before).

So this was the content of the event as far as the K-3 III is concerned. I’ll post separately about what they said about other APS-C models, lenses and the future of the K-1, but don’t expect anything too specific, because nothing was announced, shown or added to the roadmap.

I'm a bit confused by Ricoh's recent product launch strategy. With the GR IIIx we saw an official announcement in Japan and Europe, followed by the US announcement about a week later, along with asynchronous pre-order availability.

Now we have this lens, supposedly available for sale in Japan and now also Europe, but no press release or official announcement anywhere. Am I missing something? ;)

That pink version of the original Q was a collaboration with the Spanish fashion brand Loewe. Only 100 were made, and matching handbags and cases were available.

???????????LOEWE×PENTAX????????? - ???? Watch Watch

I think at this early stage, Pentax was really serious about marketing the Q to young (non-photographer) women, so this was a kind of publicity stunt to get mentions in fashion magazines.

This was all before the multicolor Q10 era, and this model exhibited in Moscow is a bit more exclusive than that.

asahi man's track record hasn't been great lately... so I take those rumors with a whole ladle of salt. Not to mention that filling this list, given current release tempo, would take roughly half a century.

My Sigma 17-50 image wise is very good, no complains and if I need something better wide open there is always 15mm Ltd. But Sigma is not WR and here in Poland good chunk of the year it is either raining or snowing. Or both. Still price is mind boggling for something not used to earn money.

This could be their way of finding a good use for what would otherwise be 'trash';
Instead of dumping them in the landfill, they give them to collectors who will value them for years before passing them on to their heirs.
They are still a loss - but they make customers happy, so they get some benefit from their expenditure.
Book the 'bad prisms' under "marketing" instead of under "trash".

It seems the demand for the K-3 III is high, but I'm not sure if it's on par with demand for, say, the K-1 when it came out. If the camera still isn't "fully" in stock in a month, then we can more safely conclude that it's exceeding expectations. After all, it only started shipping just a few days ago. :)

The long wait between new Pentax models means that a lot of pressure banks up behind the dam. When it breaks, it is spectacular, but when it settles, it's a trickle.

More regular releases please Ricoh.

AF-C of K-3III is impressive

Even thought I never had the chance to do so with a K5II I did with a Kr, K5, K3, and K3-II and I feel you. Even on the latest post I made about ELMS, there is some images I was shooting at a corner where it was almost impossible to pan a car with the right focus on the K3-II with a fast lens (i mean a fast AF lens) as the Sigma 100-300mm F4. My mate had his D500 there with a regular 70-300mm f whatever high to f whatever higher and let me try, that was suuuuper easy to get in focus almost every single time. So yeah that is a good point. Even some years ago shooting on a Canon 7D MK-I and a regular lens (a 35-350mm lens from Canon) at a 24 hours race at night here in the same corner I wanted to get the brakes red and some flames and it was super hard to impossible to achieve with my K3 + Sigma 100-300mm f4, but with that Canon it was quite simple to do and on focus. I mean the Pentax was not even able to work with that. (on a side note I hate those Canons, they are big, all plastic and menus and names are weird to me).

So yes if the K3-III does a proper job, that'd be a superb step forward.

Thanks!

---------- Post added 05-02-21 at 06:18 AM ----------

I was using AF-C with AF Hold turned off. I started out using the AF-C AF setting but later switched to AF-C ExS. AF-C AF worked great, but I found that the extra focus points available in AF-C ExS helped make up for my deficiencies at tracking the dogs. I used the joystick to move the focus points to where I wanted them for framing. Unlike my K3 and K1MarkII, where I get the best results with the center focus points, the entire focusing area works great on the K3MarkIII.

---------- Post added 05-02-21 at 06:20 AM ----------

I was really impressed with photo #9. The dog's head went behind the pole, but the camera remained focused on the eyes.

---------- Post added 05-02-21 at 06:22 AM ----------

I offered the dog some whiskey and a bicycle, but it declined.

---------- Post added 05-02-21 at 06:24 AM ----------

I wasn't aware that this lens was considered "slow". I find it works great on the K1MarkII as well. However, it is very fast focusing on the K3MarkIII.

---------- Post added 05-02-21 at 06:25 AM ----------

Thanks. Yes, my biggest concern with the K3MarkIII is that the failed images are my fault now. I can't blame them on the camera.

---------- Post added 05-02-21 at 06:30 AM ----------

Thanks. I had zero buffer issues while shooting this event. I was shooting some pretty good bursts at the different obstacles but never had the buffer fill to the point that I had to wait for it to clear. My biggest complaint with the K1MarkII is the shallow buffer. So far, I love the buffer on the K3MarkIII!

FYI - I am using UHS-II V90 SD cards in the K3MarkIII.
