Asking Price
165.00 USD

Item Location
Bakersfield, California (United States)

Item Description
I have a few Micro 4/3 items for sale since I have just gotten a K-01 to complement my K-3.

1. Red E-PL3 with 14-42mm II R kit lens and factory flash

Great condition. Shutter count is 1721.
Came with basic manual. More detailed instruction manual is PDF only which I printed out and have it bound.
Firmware has the latest 1.04. Came with 2 batteries (1 factory, 1 DigiPower) and 2 chargers (1 factory, 1 Vivatar).
Came with a Tiffen 37mm Kit with 3 filters: UV, CPL, and a 812 warming filter.
2 new additional LCD screen protector films besides the one already installed.

Some very minor issues.
- The hot-shoe cover is broken on the sides, but 100% usable. See pic.
- Missing factory CD. Never used it and lost it. No other papers.
- Missing rear cap for the kit lens, which isn't needed if the lens is on the camera.

$165 shipped to you. All fees included. Photos below.

2. Brand New Unused SEMA-1 [SOLD]

This is the adapter for external microphone hookup. Bought it thinking I would use it. Never got around to using it. Seems like there may be a problem with supply and prices went UP. Selling it $60 shipped. All fees included.

3. Olympus VF-2 with EP-9 cup [SOLD]

No box. No papers. Just the pouch, VF-2, and the extra Olympus EP-9 cup which is very nice under bright sunlight. $155 shipped. All fees included.

4. Panasonic 14mm f2.5 [SOLD]

No box. No papers. Just what is pictured. Lens, both caps, and the pouch.
I can include a clear glass filter as well for the lens protection. Pretty good IQ.
Took less than 100 photos with it. Mint, like new. $155 shipped. All fees included.

FYI:
This lens make clicking noises if you move your camera around with it on.
It is normal on Olympus m4/3 bodies according to here. There should be no noise on Panasonic bodies, as far as I know, since I have never owned a Panasonic m4/3 body.

Thanks. Glad you find my camera test useful. You're welcome. For 300mm, I will probably wait till I get a few primes first since most photos I will be taking are street, travel, low light, and editorial type images. Probably best for me to space out buying additional lenses to preserve the peace & quiet at home :D.

AF Hold is set to High.

Hmm. Since I haven't started using AF lock at all (haven't gotten to that part in the manual yet), I have no idea at all :). But, I may be able to test at a swimming class, although compared to long jump, it might be an easier test.

Twitch. Thank you for this. After setting AF Hold to High, I'm getting better results.

Yes. K-3 is great. None taken. Well, I did have to work hard by keeping the bird in the frame . Even that seems pretty hard for a newbie like me :). Today, with the AF Hold setting changed, I got better tracking result as shown here.

Bird sequence C (last 3 frames were omitted because that's where I went "where did it go?" due to the zoom's narrow FOV; there's nothing there, but, the rest are all here).

Thanks. I got that's what it does now. I have seen that setting in the Custom menu pages. Never quite got it before.

Thank you for the explanation. That makes perfect sense now. That's what that AF button was for. To be honest, those two buttons AF & A-EL at the right hand corner, I haven't exactly played with :). I will look at the manual read a bit more.

Also, there is an AF Hold Status in custom menu with off, low, medium, and high, which probably is what twitch was referring to. It is off by default. I can probably try again with different setting.

Note to self: better finish reading the manual :)

That's the reason I switched my laptop from T400s (3.9 lbs) to X201 (3.2 lbs) to balance the backpack weight difference between E-M1 that I was considering and K-3 that I actually bought. Same hauling weight :). More rugged body & lens.

Thank you. Grackle. Hmm. I'm sure I haven't heard of it before :). I probably know less than a dozen kind of birds :).

Thank you for the tip. Your picture look incredible. Perfectly showcased the winter-going-to-work kind of mood!

Thank you for this tip. I tried a couple on my relatively small lens. Worked pretty well. With longer lens, it is probably a must.

I imagine it was the default setting? All I did was change to AFC, then, shutter to H continuous, then focus point to Auto. What is the AF button only mode? I have to admit, I just started looking at the manual :). May be I'm not doing it the right way? If you don't mind would you explain a little bit. Thanks.

I do not track wildlife, birds, or any of that sort of action. Photos I may be taking will probably be editorial, travel, and street. I'm a newbie in all of the above subjects.

However, I thought I will get out of my comfort zone, take K-3 out this morning, and track bird in flight for the first time to play. The lens I've used is the 18-135mm WR that came with K-3. So, this is the closest I can get. It was around 8am. So, light has only started to come out. But, for the most part light level is still quite low (hence may have a few motion blur on a few of them), except the sky.

Please forgive the jumpiness of the images. I was just waving the camera around, in some cases going reverse to the bird :D.

Also, please excuse the blown highlights and lousy post processing in a lot of these images and evaluate the AFC performance only. I'm lazy :p and just created a Photoshop action to take care of it instead of individually which would take forever.

I think it did reasonably well, though probably none of them are poster worthy :). All the images were taken handheld, AFC with high bursts. ISO 100 & f/5.6 @ 135mm. Varying shutter speeds from 1/400 to 1/1000. These are complete bursts. Not one image omitted. Please excuse the lengthy images. Most test sequences I have seen while researching K-3 were short. So, I thought I will post a longer one. The file setting I have used is JPG S. So, buffer write time was reasonable. Raw might take longer.

Hopefully, this serves as a test sample (either good or bad) for the performance of K-3 AFC for people researching into getting or upgrading to a K-3.

Admins & moderators: I assume the number of images are ok since they are external links. If not, please feel free to edit / remove / move them to appropriate location. Thanks.

Bird Sequence A (everything in this sequence came out well). If the images doesn't appear to be in sequence, it's because I moved my camera around to force the bird back into the center point of the frame :D. Also, these are truly from the same burst since I shot a single still between each sequences to separate them; no chance of getting confused.

Bird Sequence B

The last frame is bad probably because I thought that's enough spraying for the day and my head is also twisted about 90 degree right and 85 degree up :D.

Vote for K-3 at DPR overall "best" poll!

I'd love to. However, it requires registering at DPR and after lurking a lot there and reading all the fights, I do not want to register unless I absolutely have to.

By the way, I read a thread there regarding the link from this forum to that site's poll as cheating. With all the nastiness & accusations flying there regarding the poll, I would just keep my love ... private :)

K-3 exchanged ... my image sharpness issue identified & solved

Just trying to update on my second copy of the K-3 after a scary false start. I got it last night. Opened & charged the battery overnight.

This morning, I was pretty excited. However, in the beginning (the first hour of using) there were so many problems on my second copy. What kind of problems?

1. In P and Green Mode, LV button cannot be pressed. Actually, seemed like button was stuck.
2. LV came on by itself. My fingers were nowhere near it.
3. Continuous shooting by itself. What?
4. Camera won't focus. Low light. All light. Nothing.
5. Shutter sound like a light bulb hitting the pavement and exploding. I removed the lens and checked. Yeah, it was the mirror or cover thingy hitting up/down sound. Arh.
6. Pop up flash needs a little pressure to push back in.
7. I had to set the date & time & language every time I switch it on. What is that?

I was cursing to myself for sending the first one back and thinking may be I should buy a used K5IIS (used is cheaper & tested, but what do I do with the insurance & warranty I bought) or E-M1 because after using the E-PL3 and no fuss lightweight picture taking, it is quite appealing too.

So, I threw it in my car and headed to the nearby park for additional test. It was a little chilly with probably low 40s outside. Low and behold all problems disappeared like it was a different camera. All I did was re-seat the battery, memory cards, and reset all custom settings which did not help when I did it. Weird. Probably my K-3 just want a ride :D. But, since the problem never repeated the whole day and I bought all kinds of warranties, I should be safe if something happens in the future.

Now, I'm happy to report that my second copy of K-3 is great. Also updated the firmware to 1.01 ... for good measure :).

Pictures are pixel-level sharp as long as I make sure the shutter speeds are at least 1.5 to 2 times my focal length with SR off. May be I have shaky hands.

Here are some test pictures. Pardon the bird picture & its DOF. I'm not a birder and have no clue about the bird I just took a picture of :D.

Time for some accessories and a decent WR prime for low light perhaps.

Thank you everybody for the troubleshooting tips, suggestions, and kindness. Appreciate it.

PS: My first copy's serial starts with 483421X, I think. This one is 483427X, which is within 100 of each other in the same assembly line, in case somebody wants to track.

Thank you. Actually, I was pretty happy with mine too ... until the pixel peeping bug hit me :). Admittedly, what it is was my newbie's lack of skill and wanting to get a good image like others that prompted me to pursue the pixel level sharpness (aka 3D like IQ in newbie's term) :D. I'm sure, the replacement will be awesome.

I understand. The easiest solution of exchanging was recommended by a rep at CRIS though he said if mine was over the exchange period, they should be able to fix it easily as well. His recommendation came because of that extreme "+10" number. More than that and I won't be able to adjust any more. Since I have bought 5 year accidental & 3 year Pentax warranty, I guess I should be pretty safe regardless of the outcome. For newbies buying expensive items as toys/semi-pro use, safe is good :).

Nonetheless, I'm happy to have learned the difference between tuned and un-tuned results which is big.

This I can relate, being in the computer field, is analogous to buying a new computer. A brand new computer is fast. But, removing factory junk ware (all those freebies / trial software) and tuning it will make it run even faster, which I do on new computers I buy or build. Probably same thing with cameras.

You're welcome.

Thanks. Actually, that's the first thing I did since I started noticing it because that was what Ed from PhotoUniverse stated in his video. However, as I was just testing, I didn't do it like you said. I just flat out set NR to OFF.

Well, actually it's not a big deal for me. I could have kept my copy with the +10 af adjustment. In addition, it's nothing wrong technically. It's just not sharp at 100% view; pixel peeping. Since I'm a newbie, I'm assuming it is customary to have to calibrate a new lens on any DSLR. I'm not sure.

Nonetheless, during the holidays, I had a chance to visit stores like Walmart & Best Buy and tested out a few DSLRs. Now I know what people mean by plasticky. There is absolutely no comparison to the K-3's solidness. After a long time of deciding and selecting, I'm sure K-3 is what I want.

I just wish I have the K-3 for the holidays & the new year :D. Good thing I have an Olympus E-PL3 that was initially gonna be my main camera.

K-3 should be here on Monday. So, I'll update on my 2nd copy as soon as I get it. Thanks.

Does it mean, it might not have been the back focus problem as I thought?

Oh well, since the first K-3 already went back, I will definitely go through the troubleshooting with the help of this forum, just to be sure, if my replacement has any issue. Thanks.

Sure. I will definitely do that.

Thanks. That's what I'm finding out with my first DSLR. The one closest to a DSLR that I have was an Olympus C2500L 14 years ago. It was actually quite decent, given me some memorable pictures.

You're welcome. I'm sorry to hear about similar issue. May be this image below can help you a little.

Raw DNG

---
As you can see, this image is when I actually realized my focus issue. With my earlier battery test pictures, there is nothing immediately behind the middle battery. So, when all the batteries are a little soft, I still thought mirror slap, cheap tripod, not using the timer as possible issues instead of the focus issue. I wasn't 100% certain until this picture.

In this picture, the size of the red square is smaller than the positive battery nub on top and it is pointing directly to the middle part of the 3rd battery. Yet, the focus is to the taller mini Christmas tree behind it, thus, clearly demonstrating back focus. Of course, it would have been easier with all the available focus charts. However, angle of the charts and distance makes me a little more confused :D. So, I chose the easier way that I found online somewhere.
