I am wondering about the batteries...but it is a straw I am grasping at. Time will tell.

Agreed! I am more than pleased with their responsiveness. And that includes the initial, very timely shipment. It is nice to deal with a company that cares.

So, this is pretty odd. Today, I tried the unit again, and without doing anything else (like, for example, changing the batteries that didn't work yesterday), now it works fine. I did no other adjustments, or anything other than leaving it on a shelf.

That is very, very strange. Yesterday was colder than today. I wonder if there is an operational temperature on this?

In any event, at least it works as expected, and it is performing flawlessly. Yea!

Hello!

Based on the strength of this review, I went ahead and purchased them from GI. They work exactly as advertised, except... my transmitter stopped working 10 minutes after I turned it on. No matter what, I cannot get it to work again. Yes, I put in new batteries. Yes, I took the batteries out from the working receiver.

We'll see how overseas customer service is, but I figured I would chime in with my 2 cents. Sometimes, I guess cheap is just cheap.

Yes. I format the card only in the camera it will be used in, and do not delete images from the computer.

yup!

No. BUT... I have discovered that if I develop the RAW in camera into a JPG, the image is corrupt. So I reason that the transfer doesn't matter. Having said that, I did try to go back to the original Pentax cable just to see if it made a difference. It did not. Good points about my card reader. Never had a problem with it before, nor do I have a problem with any K10 files.

These cameras have an off switch? :) No. I do not turn it off mid write. About 99% of the time the camera powers itself down.

Again, excellent points.

If I shoot DNG+JPG, or PEF+JPG, the JPG image is always perfect. But sooner or later the DNG or RAW has a problem. I went through my pile of SD cards before I realized it happened across cards, types and manufacturers (I figured it HAD to be the card.) It appears random to my eyes, but there has to be a pattern I am not seeing. Maybe it does get too hot... I'll pay attention to that. I shoot almost always low ISO. And I do a TON of long exposure. I'll go back through some particularly troublesome shoots and see if I see anything with these new thoughts.

It also dawned on me that perhaps I ought to reset my camera to factory settings, and see if the problem happens. If not, then I'll add in the menu settings I use, one by one, and sooner or later I will find it.

Thank you all for the help!

Sorry for stirring this all up.

Perhaps a better way to have said this was: it is, at this time, not practical for me to send this body in. I depend on the K5. I have a workaround (JPG) and taking critical shots twice. At some time, in the future, I will send it in, when it is not as a critical time. Perhaps, between now and then, the problem will be fixed in firmware or my sales will be higher than expected and Pentax will release a new camera, or I will purchase another K5, freeing this one up. At the moment, it is monsoon season in the American west, a beautiful time for photography, but not a beautiful time to be without a K5, and since the K5 drives my income, sending it in for something which is annoying, yet minor, is not a great idea.

In the meantime, Pentax support gave me the runaround, so I did not have any confidence that it is the body, and felt that they were simply giving me canned answers.

My image failure rate is about 1 in 100 images.

Hope that clears up my reasons. I chimed in on this thread in case others were experiencing the problem as well.

I believe that it is a firmware problem. And since I depend on this camera, I am none too keen to send it away for a while for a problem I do not think will be fixed. I'll reach a slow time soon, and by then, hopefully, there is new firmware or I have enough down time to send it away. I gave up on support because I was just getting standard, canned responses, and didn't feel they were even responding to my specific issue.

Lest anyone not think I like Pentax, I've been shooting nothing except Pentax since 1984, and will continue to do so for as long as I can. :)

I have the same problem, and mine is NOT related to the SD card.

I have used a reliable card, and it produced the same problem (SanDisk Ultra II). I switched to a brand new, out of the box card (Samsung) and it too had the same problem. I tried another card, also out of the box (Samsung again) and it also fails. These same cards work perfectly on the K10. I also have the problem when shooting PEF.

I contacted Pentax support, who basically told me it wasn't happening. I sent the files to them, and they claimed it was because I used a card reader. I used the transfer cable, and it happened again. Then they claimed it was my OS (Mac), so I developed the DNG in camera to JPG, and it too had the problem. Then they said it was the camera body itself and I should send the body back. I declined to do this.

What I have done to work around this is always shoot DNG+JPG. JPG images NEVER have the problem, so this tells me it is not the card.

I believe this problem started with the latest firmware, but can't prove that.

Hope this helps, and maybe someone else can chime in to get enough attention for Pentax to finally see this as a problem. I ran around for a couple of months with Pentax support before finally giving up.

Afraid to take my K-5 and 18-135WR out in the rain ?

I could not agree more! In fact, I was deeply surprised the lens leaked at all. However, that water was moving quite fast, and there was a lot of force, and there were rocks, too. It cannot be discounted that perhaps the lens hit a rock on the way in.

On the bright side, all the mud in the impossible to clean places on the K5 was washed neatly away from the last...incident. Dust, water, mud... great, great weather seals!

This weekend I took a (very unexpected) refreshing dip in Oak Creek, near Sedona. Not wanting to leave my K5/18-135 out of the fun, they joined me too. Despite going underwater for longer than I would have cared for in monsoon-driven rapids, the K5 came out perfectly fine. The 18-135, however, fared far worse and did not survive. Water came in the front of the lens, creating some exceptionally pleasing bokeh when it dried. Also, the lens reports having a 0.5 aperture now, and is no longer bothered by the tedium of actually having to focus.

Moral: the weather sealing is awesome in the extreme. It is not always infallible (and I am beyond thankful the K5 held up. yea, Pentax!). I have previously used this combination before in light to moderate rain with no fear and no problems. It is also possible that my heavy use of the 18-135 knocked something loose in the couple of years and hundreds of rugged situations it has been through.

Thanks for the detailed instructions, and the AMAZING photos.

Looks like I need to be looking for a ring flash. Well, I had thought about that, but just needed a fine excuse!

Thanks so much!

reverse stack for macro?

This evening I manually held up my old (but still wonderful) 50mm1/.7 to my kit 18-55 and peeped through. The magnification looks pretty nice, all tolled, and I did notice that focusing was via my feet. Then again, perhaps learning to focus with my feet is not really all that bad :)

For the amazing amount of $5.99USD/shipped (and it was that much because I failed to notice the 10% discount code available), I picked up a 49mm/49mm adapter via mail order*. Once it gets here, I'll be able to give this a much more thorough test.

The bugs here are pretty unfriendly... we're in the desert, so many of the creepy crawlies like as not will sting you. But then again, I guess that will make really cool close up scary pictures :)

I hope.

* After ordering, and congratulating myself on my purchase, it dawned on me that the kit lens is 52mm, while the adapter is 49/49 and the old 50mm is 49mm. OOPS. Luckily, I just happen to have a 52->49mm step down ring from an earlier goof, so that ought to be fine for this. A little vignetting is the least of my worries at this point.

Great!

Thank you all for the wonderful and very informative information...I truly appreciate it. It sound like this is something that I ought to try, but not necessarily hold my breath about.

Then again, how do you know until you do try? :)

Thanks to all for the words of wisdom!

reverse stack for macro?

Ah. OK. That makes sense. Trial and error is something I am familiar with.

So, for example, let's say that I have a DA 55-300mm lens, filter size 58 on the camera body. I also happen to have laying around an old A50mm, manual focus, filter size 49mm.

I would need a 58mm->49mm filter adapter, which would put the 50mm onto the 55-300mm, but reversed, of course, since I am going from filter-filter, right?

And that would bring the bug in nice and close.

How does focus/f-stop work for the stacked lens?

(So many questions!)
Thank you very much for the replies!

Hello!

I saw this response in the for sale forums:

I am looking for a good macro lens for the exact purpose of making bugs look big and scary. I've been searching for a 100mm macro, since this seems to be a popular/reasonable choice. (I am thinking the DA or the FA will suit me well on a second body).

However... maybe I am missing something. Would a reverse stack be better for my purposes?

And... how do I go about making a reverse stack? And how does a flash work with this?

Thank you!
