Pentax FF spring 2016

Just by the nature of it being a FF means that it will have to be bigger. So comparing it to the apps-c Pentax offerings really isn't fair. It will still be considered tight and compact if it is smaller than the FF competitors. Looking at the renderings compared to the K-3 I was actually pleasantly surprised that it wasn't bigger.

Ultimately I am trying to not take too much stock in a small number of shadowed renderings. A lot can change from a rendering. I would be more interested in comparisons of an actual prototype.

I one of the weddings I shot this summer had a videographer shooting on Canons. She was amazed by how cute and tiny my 31 was (she was using a 35 for her video). She just about died when I got the 43 out. If only I had the pancake 40.

There is more than one person on here who uses Pentax gear for their income.

And while I would have liked FF in October, I value quality more. If they need a few more months to get it right, then fine. It is not like I would magically make more money if I had a FF in Nov or Dec instead for Apeil or May.

Maybe they are actually marketing geniuses. They have certainly managed to captivate all of our attention. They will slowly dribble out bits and pieces for us to over analyze over the next several months...screw drive or no screw drive...cold shoe or hot shoe...flip panel screen or not...evf or ovf...

We will picture the worst. We will agonize over how it will surely be the end of Pentax. And then they will release the specs and it will be better than we imagined - so even if it doesn't have everything we ever wanted it will still be better than the worst case scenario. And we will be happy until we start the process over again 6 months after the new camera release.

FF out in 4 months

I initially was thinking it was a mistake as well to miss the Holiday season, but the more I thought about it, the more I don't know if it really matters. It is not like if it was a new release it was going to have a Black Friday deal attached to it. And this is not a gift type of camera. I would never expect my husband to have one waiting for me under the tree. Plus, the whole black Friday thing is a very North American (and more specifically US) thing.

The K5 and the string of pearls is exactly what I was thinking of! My husband thought I was a total lunatic taking pictures of the sky trying to determine if there was a string of pearls issue with my new camera. He doesn't know anything about cameras and his response to that nonsense was, "why didn't you buy a Nikon?"

If they are going to release something, then it needs to be right. Since I have already waited 5 years or whatever, what is another 6 months or so? I am just excited that there will be a day in the not too distant future where I can really take the three amigos on the ride they truly deserve.

At this point, it is worth it to keep waiting. If we waited through the year of not even knowing if there would be a full frame or not then we definitely can wait a few months for the actual camera. We know that it is coming at least.

Really, I want FF too, but I also want the best camera that it can be. I would rather have a delay until spring if it means a camera release that has no quality control issues.

P-TTL Noob Question - Help Much Appreciated

So since you want off camera, the Pentax 360 or 540 would be your best options because they offer a wireless pttl mode. With this, you can avoid cords and wireless triggers as long as your camera can be set to wireless mode. In the menu, you can set if you want the cameras on board flash to be used in the exposure or if it is just a trigger, but will not contribute to the exposure. Of course, this also relays on the camera you are using supporting this feature.

As to the overexposure issue with the flash on bounce, I do not have this issue at all with my IIs. I did have some issues withy the k5, but pulling out the diffuser panel and the software update seems to have fixed it. I have shot many weddings at this point and not had any issues.

I am waiting until 2014. I bought the IIs in 2013 and for taxes I don't want to have two camera purchases on the taxes...better to have one a year. Plus, I have two weddings left this year...so I don't want to mix things up. I will order in the spring during the slow season :) but I will be ordering!!

I have a 2011 Mac mini and it works fine. I did upgrade my ram to 4gb which helps it run multiple editing programs at once. I run aperture, Lightroom 5, and cs6 programs fine. I also have it attached to two monitors and 4 external hard drives at all times.

I have to say - I think you are really lucky that this was covered by warranty! I know it sucks that it took so long to get it back, but I would be so thankful that I didn't have to pay for repairs for water damage that I would just keep quiet. But that is just me!! Congrats on getting the camera back and in working condition!!

This. This is why I think an integrated grip is important.

But I thought they did do the 70-200 in PK...what is certain is that at the current time the only FF zoom offerings are the products of 3rd party vendors.

I can see your point about making the camera bigger or smaller, but if we are talking about a real pro model here, the grip should be integrated. Everyone who is going that kind of professional level shooting wants a grip. Plus, while it is not difficult, it is inconvenient to have to remove the grip to change batteries.

I agree with you on all of these points. Oh, the integrated grip. I now am the proud owner of two grips and I just can't shoot with the K5 or the IIs without it. I love, love, love the idea of a 135-270 2.8 - such a great range for a wedding.

I know people think that a lens like that would be too heavy - and it might be for some, but it is necessary for a real pro level set up. 70-200 2.8 lenses are a Canikon standard for wedding shooters. I use my 60-250 every wedding, but I am totally open - and sometimes that is a push!

I really do believe that Ricoh hears us with our desires for an upgrade and I appreciate that they are taking the time to do it right. I just think it could be a bad move to release a FF camera without your own lenses to support it. If they released FF by Christmas (this year), then many would find themselves buying 3rd party to have zooms to use with it - and from a business standpoint, that just doesn't make much sense. I have to be optimistic that part of why they aren't releasing the camera yet is because they are deciding what lenses to also release with it and they are busy getting the manufacturing in place.

You are right here - they are lacking in making a real bid for wedding, event, photojournalist, sports and wildlife pro photographers. You are spot on about where they are lacking (give me better AF - the IIs is better than the K5, but I am hungry for more!) - I also think they need to address fps for sports and wildlife (and that wouldn't hurt my weddings either) and the trends in the wedding industry for good low light performance with FF. But in my opinion it is going to take more than camera specs to make a real bid for those industries. The new flashes are a start, but it will take lenses too, such as the 60-250 would need to be updated to FF (and it wouldn't hurt to get it to 2.8). Given that so much needs to be done to really release a pro level FF dslr, it makes me wonder if they aren't just content to stay with prosumers....

Weddings are pretty much the only reason that I was dual card slots. I had a card fail on me once (horrible), but if I had two cards both recording the same images, I wouldn't have lost any images.

I use a K5 and a IIs for weddings and I shoot at least two of them a month. They work great. The moire thing has really not been an issue, despite all of the fabrics. The improve AF is really great at receptions.

I really love mine. I got it because a lot of couples want the wide angle fisheye shot from the back of their ceremony. Even though I got it for a specific reason it is one of my favorite lenses for a photo walk, maybe because it is not the expected perspective to be shooting from for city type of shots. Anyway, if the deal is good, I say go for it! Do a single in September challenge and really push yourself to think with the fisheye perspective.

K-5 upgrade to K-5 II. Is to worth for P-TTL?

I have found the AF to be more decisive and faster. Using the k5 at weddings, I saw the most issues during dancing at the reception. By that time the lights in the room were usually off and it was all based off of the moving lights from the DJs set up. The IIs does much better in those conditions. I don't notice as big of a difference in normal conditions, but my IIs does not have any backfocus issues and my K5 does. I know that can be camera based issue, but my K5 does backfocus on every shot with a lens, but some of them. In my mind, the improved AF is the reason why the IIs doesn't have the same issues.

It is a nice upgrade to the AF, but I don't really feel that the flash system is working any differently between my two cameras. Personally, I have found more accuracy and reliability when bouncing the flash if I have the diffusion panel out and I have the flash zoom capabilities set to manual (on the Pentax 540 the flash automatically goes into manual zoom when the diffusion panel is out).

I personally found the 43 just Right. I know a lot of people don't find it very different from a 50, but just that little bit of extra room made a huge difference for me. If you want something a little wider, I suggest looking at the 31 or the 35 macro.
