K3 Crazy Mirror Sickness (Mirror Flapping Lockup) - Report Yours Here!

That's definitely what I'm hoping!

I haven't tried time-lapsing or anything like that, but I've definitely put mine through its paces since I got it back.

I sent it in July 2nd, got it back July 17th. Faster than I expected. Though I should note that I had them run AF diagnostics and lens calibrations for 2 lenses + the body as well, so I'm uncertain what sort of a turn around just the mirror fix would have.

I do have to say, C.R.I.S had exceptional customer service during the entire process.

I thought I should report back in.

I sent my K-3 body in to C.R.I.S for repair, specifically for the mirror flapping issue.

I received the body back, and took it on a road trip. 4,653 shots later, I haven't had the issue again. Granted this is a fairly small sample size, I received the error fairly often previously - so I'm under the assumption the fix applied resolved something.

Waiting to see if I get the issue again.

I'm fairly certain the star designates someone reporting the incident in this thread, a name listed without a star is a user that reported in another thread.

Multiple camera bodies are designated by numbers following the entry.

Unless this has somehow changed since the beginning of the thread?

How does that make any sense whatsoever?

I believe the entire point to this thread is to document different users that have had the issue occur - not just people plagued by it.

Actually, not really. From my experience, they generally direct you to the manufacturer to repair rather than handle anything on their side. Assuming the purchase isn't within the standard 30 day period anyway.

Though I'm still shocked as to why there are so many down players all around. It's almost as if there's a magical world in some people's mind where if you sit by quietly and act good Ricoh will pat you on the head and reward you.

I took a look at your EXIF data

Something I noticed is you're shooting at the long end of your lens (200mm), but your shutterspeed is 1/100.

A general rule of thumb I read a lot is 1/focal length. This is supposed to help reduce camera shake when hand-holding.

So for this case it'd be 1/200 at least. I've seen a lot of people refute this, but I figure a "general" rule is supposed to be just that.

Also, I'm assuming (based on composition) your daughter is the girl in the middle? Someone with better eyes might be able to tell you whether or not you're having some front or back focusing based on the picture.

I actually still check this thread daily.

I like to check and see if there are any new developments.

I find it mildly disturbing that there exists this odd movement amongst other members and those of DPR that one should ignore an issue such as this...I think more so because the main proponents of the argument are those who have not experienced the issue, or have only had it occur infrequently. Sweeping it under the rug because of your personal experiences and optimistic thinking would be doing a grave disservice to those of us whom find the problem commonplace - not to mention you yourself as a potential K3 user should you ever encounter it in the future.

Logging information about individual occurences certainly may not lead anywhere with Pentax directly doing something, though I feel that gathering as much data on the issue would certainly make it easier to replicate eventually, and through that some troubleshooting by various members may find some solution. I definitely hope that it so happens Pentax takes notice and fixes things, however.

Still, I would like to thank DRabbit for taking the time to actively pursue the issue.

Camera information:
K3 - purchased December, 2013.
Serial #: 4851756

Crazy Mirror Sickness Occurred:

It's been a recurring problem, becoming moreso apparent to me recently.

I don't generally shoot any timelapse photography, but I've had the problem (in addition to unresponsive camera lockup) happen just during normal shooting.

Settings/Circumstances:

I've had it happen so far with base firmware, and every single updated firmware released to date (v1.03)

1 or 2 SD cards (2x Sandisk Extreme 32gb 45/s, Sandisk 16gb, Lexar 32gb, and a Transcend 16gb) in nearly any combination (haven't tried all possible combinations of cards).

Av, Tv, or M modes are all I generally shoot in, and it occurs in all of those.

Shake Reduction I generally keep on, though I've had it off a few times on a tripod and it occurs as well.

Outdoors and Indoors

25ºF to 75ºF+

I've had the problem occur most frequently when the battery grip was connected. It occured both with standard AA batteries, and with the pentax genuine battery. It also occurs without the grip attached. I've only ever used genuine pentax batteries when shooting body-only.

Has happened using Live View and not using Live View.

WB generally set to "Auto"

Format is always set to RAW

I've had the issue arise in AF.S and AF.C, I don't use AF.A often enough to track any incidents.

I generally seem to trigger the problem while the camera is in M.UP, Continuous H, or Remote (3s)

In addition to the crazy mirror, I seem to have an odd issue with my LCD screen unpredictably during the lockup. Here's a video showcasing that:

That is interesting

Unfortunately I was using a 50 f1.8 all day. I was shooting in AF.C, I wonder if there's something bizarre with that.

I had an interesting experience today.

I have not run into the whole shutter lock/runaway mirror thing since I've updated the firmware to 1.03. However, today while I was taking some pictures, at one point, the camera became completely unresponsive. I couldn't fire the shutter, activate the LCD screen, or even turn the camera off using conventional means. The only thing I could do (after about 8 minutes of tinkering around) was pull the battery.

It struck me as somewhat odd in both occurence and situation. No second SD card, no grip, no flash, no live view. Battery was not low at all (I'd approximate about 95% charge).

I'm becoming somewhat unnerved with the amount of issues I've been running into.

Odd shutter issue - "firmware 1.0" problem?

Interestingly enough, I was using Liveview intermittently between the first and second occurrence. However, I was not using it when it actually occurred.

I originally had two memory cards in the camera, though after the first runaway shutter I took the second card out - thinking maybe that was the problem.

I'll go ahead and check that other thread out as well.

I've had a really similar issue happen twice on me.

Both occurred over this last weekend when I was out trying to get some pictures of stars.

I had the camera set up with the battery grip attached.

The camer was in remote mode once, and M.UP mode the second time. Both times it happened in manual exposure.

The first time I thought it was something odd going on with high continuous capture or something similar to do with the remote.

I could only stop it firing by turning the camera off, and even then it continued for some time.

Interestingly enough, the first instance nothing particularly weird happened other than the camera seemed to be taking numerous pictures. However, the second time around the screen actually bugged out and displayed a green set of numbers or something like that.

I managed to capture a short, low quality video with my phone to show what was going on with the screen and the actual shutters going off or whatever was happening.

I'll upload it in a post below this one.

It's a lot darker than I recall, though it was at night with the only lightsource being quite a few feet away.

Zooming with your feet, will new zooms end that?

Though I think the point here is that the suggested prime for such shots would be one of sufficient focal length. I think it's somewhat of an errenous argument to say that someone would suggest you use a 50mm prime to snap a couple candid grizzly shots.

The primary debate I've read about is not so much that "zooming with your feet" is a literal term. I believe it more refers to you as the artist, the photographer, becoming more involved in the shot. While zooms are quite useful and a convenience, there is an idea that using a prime forces you to move and recompose, possibly getting a more unique shot than standing still and zooming in.

This is also an argument I don't think you'll really find any foothold in. Many of the WR zoom lenses that I'm aware of don't internally focus, and as such they expand in volume during the action of zooming, and therefore suck in air around you into your camera. This could in turn bring in dust, water, or even spores or something similar.

Point being both of them have their problems in this regard.

I think this has more of a field specific approach and personal preference flavor than anything in the realm of mechanical reasoning.

The main things I believe someone would argue for one or the other would be based on two things:

1. The work they do with their camera causes them to prefer one lens type to another. An example might be within wildlife photography. There are many different types of wildlife photography, but we could take two for example.

Ornithological - Most generally use fairly long focal length lenses to try and get as "close" as possible. Would a zoom really help here? For most cases I would have to assume no, as you'd spend most, if not all, of your time on your highest FL anyway.

Macro - Again, you're dealing with working distance here. I'm sure there is a benefit, though I cannot immediately think of one, to using zoom lenses in this setting. However, I would imagine that it would add on to the, already considerable, effort that must be put into focusing as-is.

2. They simply like using zooms or primes. Personally, I don't have much experience with photography, though I do have to say I enjoy using primes. I believe I would have to say it has something to do with the simplicity it brings to capturing a moment, and the complexity that is intertwined. While you know what your FL is, and that will not change is the simplicity, the complexity is framing the picture.

The puzzle busting and ingenuity required to achieve some photographs is always enjoyable for me.

Anyway, there's two cents from an enthusiastic amature.

I went ahead and called B&H - talked with a very nice rep. named Blake and everything got settled.

Pretty happy I decided to go with B&H from now on, they've got great customer service. Though I will admit the phone customer service seems a little more determined to figure things out with you. Perhaps it's the immediacy of things opposed to e-mail.

B&H will match any promotion or discount price that goes on for an item you purchased within the last 30 days. It's their way of not punishing customers for buying early.

If I can show it existed they'll give me the grip.

Good news!

After an unfortunate length of time involving much confusion, frustration, and playing phone tag - I finally received my camera and lenses.

A by product of this delay has caused me to gain some considerable paranoia. I spent far too much time devoted to reading about the K-3, and I stumbled upon many discussions of defects and others experienced. Fortunately I was able to take a few shots and I played around with all the equipment to ensure it was working correctly.

I believe, superficially, all is in order. Though I've become concerned with any sort of impaired image sharpness, as I've read about AF issues and when I zoom 1:1 in LR things don't always seem quite right. I looked into a lot of online charts people have posted to test sharpness, but I've found that my printer seems incapable of producing the amount of refined detail in the images to properly test anything.

I'm not really sure as to how I should go about testing this - and I'm almost certain that any sort of loss in image quality or sharpness is very likely due to my own unskilled photographic nature.

I went ahead and attached two random images. I think I'm maybe using a bit too large of an aperature so the depth of field is too shallow to truly capture many things in great detail, but alas, I am unsure of such things.

Nice shot! Love the pollen basket visibility.

Mantispidae are awesome! So alien. Unfortunately I do not know of any populations occuring in my general area.

That's exactly it! It's a puzzle. They can be as simple as the direction of someone's stare, and that can invoke the images of what they were watching at the time, and how that made them feel. It's so much to be conveyed that makes it a thing of beauty and very powerful.

I read your thread and I have to say, I'm quite jealous that you've been able to go to Madagascar! That must've been an experience. Also, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who finds the idea that Pentax weather seals their camera bodies as a high bonus point. Not to mention the no low pass filter. With my Nikon I was always either overly concerned or frustrated being limited in weather, and the times I did attempt a "weather proofing" (read. plastic bags) it did not at all assuage my concern. I really enjoy working around streams and bodies of water, the sheer amount of biodiversity leaves something always to be discovered. However, I also live very near many deserts and such, so dust and sand are a big problem.

I'm currently to begin working on a tri-trophic databasing grant with Hemipterans (large families, Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Poaceae, and Rosaceae are primary concern). I'll also be looking into their parasitic Hymenopteran interactions (specifically Chalcidoidea). Assuming all goes to plan that is.

Prior to following the path of Entomology I was very nearly persuaded by my mentor to pursue historical biology, or paleo-bio if I wouldn't go for that.

Thank you for the links, I haven't gotten a chance to look into them as of yet - though I'm certain I will in the next day or two.

I'm surprised at what a warm reception I've met here.

I will most certainly look into the Coccinellidae project.

Unfortunately I'm not located in Illinois.

However, a former classmate of mine somewhat recently documented Mecopterans living in a valley in California where they were not known to occur previously. So yes indeed, unless someone looks, who knows!

Most recently I've been taking pictures of a friends' pet reptiles, so unfortunately I haven't made all that many arachnid shots. However, I do plan on getting out there and getting some good Lycosidae pictures as they're fairly plentiful. Once the weather begins to be favorable again.

Those are primarily my interest as photographing goes. For the most part they're cooperative individuals, and I really enjoy them ecologically.

Ha - they certainly do! I always like using the old joke, "I've tasted Honeydew - it's sweet, and it even has a pleasant taste. It's literally good ****." Always gets people.

Unfortunately I'm unsure of when I'll be receiving my K-3 package. My shipment was supposed to arrive today. However, it never did. Upon inspection of the tracking number and shipment progress I observed three notifications. The first was there was a "Late Trailer", the second was the shipment had an updated delivery date, and the third is that there is an "Exception" placed on all packages.

I was somewhat disappointed with this turn of events, and I'm not really sure what exactly I should do (if anything). Exceptions on every sinlge package (3 of them) unnerves me.

I'm certainly hoping so!

I actually do - I tend to try and be quite descriptive whenever possible. It's lead to some interesting scenarios in academia when I need to use less prose and substitute great briefity.

That's what I love about photography! It's the act of seeing it, then all the attempts (note I said attempts) to capture it. Sometimes you win and othertimes you get to throw your hat around and stomp on it, but that just adds to the great experience.
