Thanks for the encouraging words, I was referring to screen/monitor at home. The photolab is another story how some tweak what they think is best with lighting (at least the few good ones here in Almaty, Kazakhstan. I use smug mug to send prints to family in the US.
It looked like you have sold several lenses over the years. Trying to get rid of any?

This was next to a stream nearby. With fall colors changing so quickly its hard to know if what I see on screen is how it looked. For many its how it best looks in the end.
I only added a touch of increase in contrast here. What do you think? Would you have given more depth of field or less?
How do you best gauge screen color accuracy and then how to best plan for printing?

The bumble bees seem to enjoy these flowers next to our home, as do I. Can't argue those colors. I'm amazed at the uniqueness and beauty of creation.
I got to use an old manual for this shot. Unsure if I recorded the f-stop correctly but I think it was stopped down a bit from 1.8.

Hope you enjoy your stay in the UK. Good places to photo and try out your camera, even on the many raining days.

Like many of you I have a love for photography. I have enjoyed capturing the moment and scene over the years. Starting with a variety of compact 35mm cameras, I longed for more control and quality. I finally invested in my first SLR in college without knowing much about brands or the variety and quality of lenses and took an elective photography class. I had purchased a Nikon with what's likely one of their lowest rated lenses to date. It was a good camera (so so kit lens )that served well enough (to shoot 2 weddings for friends and family) until its electronics started to fail roughly 12 years later. Digital had been growing but dslrs were still young and very expensive. I didn't have time and access to seek out a used slr while working on a volunteer budget in a remote part of the world. So was back to compacts which now offered some creative control. Wearing out two of them and many years later I purchased a K-5 this past fall. I have been pleased with the photographic results and continue to learn its feature sets. But I feel limited with my kit lens shooting in the 50-55mm range. Things just aren't crisp as they ought to be. Also light is not fast as I would like. People here are camera shy and somewhat suspicious when capturing the culture around me. Being quick and not sticking out helps, then I can share more of the culture and the country's nature. Having a small quick normal view lens would be great. I am on a very tight budget working with a non-profit in Kazakhstan and trying to get my first child through college without the funds for it. Winning a lens may be the only way I'll experience and own anything like the 50mm being offered. Please Consider me with your vote. ~Bob |

I agree, wish there was more to it like photo and short essay on how a new camera will help better contribute to society in some way. Or contest based partly on those who need such new prizes. I guess that's asking much.

[Thanks , I need to take time and not rush. One example in question was with an older compact but it did have a histogram.

yes, best exposure can help prevent of course, but at a distance a blown highlight may not be easy to pick up where the meter may look fine. I was referring to post processing help, after the shot. As you say its easier to bring up the dark areas in Raw but can't bring down a burned highlight much.

What is the best way to remove /patch up /lessen white out glare from sunlight or flash on a person's skin? I have tried healing with clone but most areas are so big for simple spot healer. I currently am trying out Light room 5. What has worked best for you?

I have Lr 5 on trial, first time user, but seeing all the good it has to offer as I go throug the steep learning curve I am likely to continue with it and use Gimp or my old Elements if layers and text are needed. Using Raw frequently it has most all of what I usually need and delivers great fine tuning in addition to basics. I am still getting used to its organizer and trying to start cataloging photos by subject, theme or place. Many have highlighted its batch processing. Good luck.

If comfortable with lens changes try a couple used primes like suggested. I have a 18-55 and appreciate the flexibility but do long for a quicker sharper lens like a prime with 2.8 or better, but saving for a good telephoto zoom myself.

The new 16mm Samyang has great reviews and f2, if the bit of loss of view is acceptable, I think the image performance looks more promising.

Congradulations; I like how you captured the light glinting through the mantis, very other-worldly. Have wanted to find an old M42 of sorts. Thanks for showing an example one more I have not heard of.

Thanks, I know where adjustments can be made but unsure on optimal speeds and ambient lighting- contrast of subject to background, etc..
