i think what's happening it the screw drive in the lens won't turn past minimum focus, and the adapter it still trying to spin, so the clicking is the screw driver slipping in and out of the groove. i don't know if its designed with a clutch or not to prevent damage to itself/the lens? could be the clutch slipping if so. there should be an electronic stop if there's too much resistance.

the new DFA AW 100 macro isn't on the list of supported lenses, but it works just fine. got my monster adapter in the mail today.

yep, any ol' e-mount extension tubes... i haven't seen any that don't have contacts. no vignetting on the 100, haven't tried others yet.

i thought i had posted this before but i guess not! from az a couple years ago. wrong time of year.... 6 days and only one type of snake. western diamondback. sometime it takes me 10-15 mins to get close without freaking them out. the world doesn't need any more terrible defensive snake pictures.

well, since people are mentioning sony...
i am trying out an a7riv and sony's 90mm macro, 35 1.8, 50 macro, and sigma art 70mm macro... and i rented the 200-600.
for high iso and working with macro subjects in post where you're really trying to bring detail out of the shadows, the 60mp sensor is a bit of a stinker. if you nail everything and have controlled lighting, it's pretty great. sony had real trouble focusing in the dark compared to pentax, and the ovf is way better in that situation. if the evf is super grainy because i'm using a flashlight at night to focus... you can't really nail focus like you can with an ovf.
i don't take many pictures of people, but sony's eye recognition is f'ing amazing. i have it set on single point af, but if a person walks into the frame it switches and stays glued to their eye.
zoom while manual focusing in the evf is pretty amazing too, but the way sony pulls it off is a little clunky, but having it at all it a plus.
sometimes i'm holding myself up with my left hand... on the k-1ii i have all the controls with my right hand, sony not so much. ergos way better on pentax.
i'm not much of a zoom person... the dfa 150-450 is usually only at 450... and the sony 200-600 was at 600 90% of the time. loss of contrast pointing towards the sun (not at the sun) was more problematic with sony... i don't know if that's a mirrorless thing or a lens coating thing. the sony is very nice... lighter, internal zoom, very short throw to get to 600, and it is absolutely wonderful to have a 600mm option... but missing some magic... and that's how i'd describe the sony experience. missing some magic... lenses get soft too early in the f-stop range from diffraction (or whatever) compared to pentax macro lenses. the sigma art 70 macro is better than the sony lenses in that regard though. this is precisely the same experience i had with trying a canon system a couple years ago, although much more benefits with sony. i found out that i really like 35mm lens on ff, but pentax took too long to make one... so i bought a sigma art 35mm for my k1ii this week. i had the 31ltd, but i didn't like it as much as the 43mm and the 28/2 hollywood. 35 fits better for me between those two. also decided to get the new dfa macro 100 because i am definitey not switching systems... and selling the old dfa will help offset the cost anyway.
on paper the a7riv should blow the k-1ii out of the water... but it does not. for the things i like to do, pentax happens to be great. pentax lenses are rather special... i hope they make more of them, and i hope they make a high mp body if they can do it in the way they've made the k1ii so great. ymmv

from a few weeks ago in fl... a rare not-a-snake photo. no nd filter, so cranked it to f32... is any expensive nd filter going to be pretty good or should i avoid certain brands? i plan on getting a massive one and using step up rings where i need to... unless there's some secret penalty for having the filter further away from the end of the lens?
