Yeah, the degree of severity does really depend on the optical formulation of the individual lense as each design will have a different internal projection diameter. That's why some of the APSC glass works fine with K1. The projection is big enough to uniformly cover the sensor. This can also change with changes in aperture which is why you can vignetting at certain apertures. Vignetting is the fall off of light at the edge of the internal projection.

"Pixels" are not projected on the sensor. Pixels are the output of the individual photoreceptors on a sensor. The main difference in using FF vs APSC lenses is the internal image projection is of a larger diameter when using a FF lense (to accomodate the large sensor size.) This means, on APSC that you are not capturing everything that the lense is capable of "seeing" as the outer edges are being projected beyond the edge of the sensor. Conversely, when using APSC lenses on a FF body, the projection diameter can be too small for the size of the sensor, leading to circular fringes. Resolution of the projected area is unaffected in either case as it is a function of the sensors sensitivity and pixel density, and also the overall quality of the lense in question.

Why would I do that? My K50 is old now and well used. Mine failed just outside of warranty and, lucky for me, I didn't have the money back then for new lenses so I had some nice old Asahi glass. Out of necessity I learned to shoot full manual, which I quite enjoy now. All my lenses, save 2 very dusty kit lenses, have manual aperture control. I might spend some money whenever K-new finally materializes, if it makes sense for me. Then I may finally get that 20-40 I keep thinking about and Pentax will get some of my money again.

yeah, sure. That is what I have been doing for years with my K50 but I have not bought one new lens from Pentax (despite really wanting the 20-40) because none of them have a manual aperture control. How many people with a failed aperture block are going to buy a new Pentax lens they can't use?

It always strikes me as an absolute epic fail for Pentax to have let this problem persist for so long. How many more lenses might Pentax have sold if they had not made multiple generations of affordable and otherwise excellent bodies that instantly make all of their excellent modern glass totally useless while still keeping the camera perfectly useable with second hand, or other manufacturers glass? How much lens revenue was lost on this? Madness.

YouTube review channel "The Cameraville" will sadly stop operating as a Pentax review specific channel, sighting lack of funding. Li, the channels creator, made many high quality, honest and informative videos painting Pentax products in the warm raw light they deserve. His work in the realm of Pentax will be missed by me at least. You Tube |

As a few people have pointed out, a circuit board with a sensor and a c mount is not really even in the same category as a full fledged DSLR. It was an intentionally exaggerated comparison with some small nuggets of truth (which I will assume is what has raised some hackles). It was basically a selfish personal call to the universe for Pentax to hurry up and make me a new camera. That said, I have enjoyed reading and responding to the discussion it generated. I do not feel that criticism, in of it self, is bad. I want Pentax to succeed and give me a beautiful new tool to replace my well worn and well loved current one. I will not be posting to this thread again, thanks for the talk!

To be fair I did say in a few iterations. And although, as I have stated, it was a crass joke, it is not all that unthinkable considering pi's pace of development and the fact that apparently anyone can go buy a new BSI sensor from Sony. The frustrating fact that it is not entirely unthinkable is why I posted it in the first place. Also, yeah building stuff!

I like quite alot about the KP on paper and I think it's a pretty camera. If it had had better video specs I would have probably bought it online ages ago. Because it did not I was a bit hesitant and read more reviews and watched whatever video reviews there were but still couldn't bring myself to order it. It was always in the back of my mind that I might be missing out and so I finally found one, held it, put my lenses on it, took pictures with it (in the store and on the street infront of the store- thanks Kerrisdale!) But in the end, for me, it did not feel comfortable in my hands despite all its charm. Thats why I did not buy it. To the question of advocating, there is a strong action sports photography scene in my community, a handful of full time professionals, quite a few semi pro and some fabulous amateur photographers. No other pentaxians that I'm aware of. I know many of these people in passing (small community) and we have talked gear on many occasions but it's a tough sell when you are vested in a system for a long time. A few Canikon shooters have jumped to Sony for the wiz bang features and video quality but found the cameras uncomfortable or unsuited to their use. Some stuck, most crawled back to their respective corners after a season, following their glass. None have yet jumped to Pentax, but there's always hope.

I certainly was not trashing Pentax, merely venting (admittedly in a somewhat trollish but certainly tounge in cheak fashion) my personal frustration that Pentax has not released a k3 ii replacement yet. As for Pentax sales.. Here in Canada, outside of a handful of small niche retailers (in the entire country) it is virtually impossible to find one to actually handle. Marketing is non existent and online, unless you are searching specifically for Pentax you will never see it. A couple of summers ago, when deciding whether to buy a KP, I had a down day on a trip to Vancouver. As I live in a relatively small town far from major urban centers, I decided to take the opportunity to find a KP. I actively scoured greater Vancouver and a fair chunk of the surrounding lower mainland of British Columbia. I did, eventually find one (literally one) in a camera shop in Lonsdale. It was not on display, I had to ask the clerk if they had one to even see it. Keep in mind: I knew about Pentax, am a member of this forum, am invested in K mount, and genuinely want to buy Pentax. And yet, in a densely populated urban area of perhaps 3 million people I had to spend an entire day on my phone and driving around just to hold a current model. How can Pentax or any reasonable person think that, in Canada at least, Pentax will see anything but decline in market share under these conditions? That is why Pentax wains, not my tongue in cheak frustration.

Actually, I love my trusty, yet slowly dying, Pentax and have been waiting for a few years now to replace it with another Pentax. I was mostly joking about the pi, although in terms of system cost, video performance, and system customization I'd say it was an accurate statement being that pi is cheap, open source and supported by a comparably massive 3rd party development community.

Haha.. Of course it will be, and hopefully it will check the boxes that kept me from a KP. Still, the glacial pace can be quite frustrating. Especially when you see Ricoh launch a new theta every other week.

Pentax may want to think about actually releasing something one day... specs, hard information, maybe even: a Camera!.. At this rate it seems like a couple more iterations and THE FREAKING RASPBERRY PI FOUNDATION will be making more advanced interchangeable lens cameras. I am sure they are already winning on video performance, value for money, and customization. Raspberry Pi announces $50 12-megapixel camera with interchangeable lenses - The Verge |

Actually, there is virtually no pentax support here in Canada. Maybe 4 brick and mortar retailers west of Toronto, and when you go in they know very little about the product and it is usually collecting dust in the corner. It is quite sad actually. I cannot understand how anyone at ricoh/pentax could think that they could have a sustainable market here without any real presence on the internet (video, blogs, social media) or anywhere for anyone to actually pick up a camera. Maybe they just don't care.
And go....

Agreed.. I really wanted to like it, even actually tracked one down in store (no mean feat here in Western Canada!) But I just couldn't get behind the ergonomics. If it had felt better I probably would have justified the lacking video and dial quirks... Although, I would have probably sobered to it later. It sure does look nice though...

Space is cool but I have not been waiting around with a hobbled K50 for 3 years for Ricoh Pentax to do some expensive wooden grips for an unpalatable camera (in my opinion anyway) and almost annual iterations of a selfie stick camera ( although I concede that the GR is cool, although unnecessary for me) I want to buy a performance SLR camera that is comfortable to hold, can handle video at least as good as a 6 year old Cell phone, and can deliver the image quality that got me into Pentax in the first place. I seriously doubt that I am the only one.

Mine had the Aperture Failure about a year in. Aside from that, it has been pretty tough despite mistreatment. The kit lenses I got with it are, of course, useless to me now but I shoot primes or older aperture ring zooms anyways because I am thrifty and I love the image qualities of older glass. I would personally love to upgrade to a newer body that is not a KP (if it ever comes out) as it is getting a bit long in the tooth. However, If you like the old glass, don't crop much, and are not feeling spendy it is a fine machine.

The hardware lack with pentax cameras so far is processing power. That is why we dont see them implementing things like 4k video, higher bit rates, faster af, eye af, and so on. They simply do not have the processing capabilities to handle the increase in requirements with their current generation chips. When they say they "we focus on image quality" they literally mean "we spend our money on the sensors", not processors.
Sony has and will have a massive advantage in this aspect. Sony makes lots of tech that requires fast processing so they have access to stuff that pentax does not, at least not without shifting the price point significantly.
Fortunately for Pentax though, faster processing does not necessarily mean better camera.

My guess would be that your aperature control has failed or is failing. This is a common problem with k50s. Mine failed about 1 year in. If your camera is out of warranty or you do not want to pay for repairs, a simple workaround is to shoot with manual aperature control as long as your lenses have an aperature ring.

Marginally better/worse image quality depending on the situation, and some software updates that most likely could run on the k1. That is pretty soft for even an incremental change. I am not by any means saying that this is a bad camera. It is just pretty much the same great camera it was 2 years ago.[COLOR="Silver"] ---------- Post added 03-22-19 at 10:52 PM ---------- |
