CPL filter questions for FA 31mm limited

Is it possible to use a B+W Step-Up Adapter Ring 58mm to 67mm on the FA 31mm?

I have three lenses (58mm, 62mm & 67mm) and wish to buy just one CPL filter to use with the step-up ring - but given the design of the hood on the FA 31mm, I'm a bit uncertain if this will work?

Anyone tried this?

Is Hoya 72 mm HMC UV-0 still a winner in the UV-filter universe?

Well - I have to give in here. The UV-filter may not be exactly what I'm looking for, since my main goal is to get clouds to stand out which would else get lost on the photo.

I've thus cast my eyes on the Hoya 58mm Circular Polarizer HD Hardened Glass 8-layer Multi-Coated Filter (in all its glory) - but there seems to be an issue with fitting it on my FA 31mm Pentax lens....

Because is it really possible to fit this filter on that lens? When I look at the lens, my logic goes "No way!" because of the built-on lens hood - but there may be an option that I'm not a rare of.

Does anyone have any experience with placing CPL-filters on the FA 31mm?

With all due respect - you may be wrong, Sir.

Why? Because in the same article we are informed of the following fact:

For waves shorter than 285 nm the glass transmits less than 10% of the light and for 200 nm or lesser range it is as little as 3.2%. But for the UV weve range close to the visible light limit the glass transmits as much as 90% of UV radiation. Should we worry about that? We know, from everyday life, that the image in the picture is in most cases the same as the image we see. It is caused by absorption and strong radiation dispersion by the earth’s atmosphere. Many kilometers above the earth the ozone absorbs some of the UV radiation. The closer to the earth’s surface, the more the UV radiation is absorbed. At the same time the light disperses while meeting atoms and the atmosphere, all the time building molecules along the way. The shorter the radiation waves, the stronger the dispersion. This effect is called the Rayleigh dispersion effect. The consequence of this effect is that blue light is 10 times more dispersed in the atmosphere than red light. This is why the cloudless sky has a beautiful blue color. However the 300 nm long UV radiation wave is dispersed 30 times stronger than red light. We cannot notice this effect but the film or CCD/CMOS detector can.

And further:

In summary, UV radiation is strongly absorbed by the atmosphere and the higher we are (on a plane or in the mountains) the more radiation we encounter. At the same time, the radiation is strongly dispersed, so when taking a picture of the Morskie Oko high mountain lake or Giewont Peak we get the impression that the image is slightly more blurred than we see with our naked eye. These are situations in which the use of UV filters would improve the picture quality.

So - if any Gentlemen or Lady in this forum has a tip for some other UV-filter than the mentioned Hoya 72 mm HMC UV-0 (which is very good, I suppose) I'd be very glad to hear of this.

Thank you kindly.

I'm investigating which UV-filters to buy for my FA 31mm Ltd, DA 18-135mm & DA* 60-250MM lenses. Of course I've come across the test Lenstip UV filters test - but this was issued in May 2009, and I was wondering what development there has been since then on UV filters? Which one would you buy today?

The test announced the Hoya 72 mm HMC UV-0 as best buy on both quality and price - any better than that one today?

New to DSLR and especially devoted to photographing in Nature, I’m trying to enhance my ability to photograph everything from clouds to tiny insects. My photo for this contest is thus not only an image of a waiting caterpillar, the best hangout I ever met, but to me also symbols transformation within silence, growth, all the possibilities resting within us. Something good to look forward to so to speak. That’s what I want to use the DA 50mm for.

Depends on where you're living. I had a splendid deal with www.pentax.sk in Slovakia. I bought the FA 31mm and the DA 55-300mm at a good price, nice people, fast delivery, quality product.

I'm looking for a Pentax certified repair shop in Sweden to take care of calibration/adjusting my three Pentax lenses (e.g. for back focus) and also the Pentax K-3 they work on.

Also, I was wondering if this is covered by the warranty?

I've been googling a bit, but it seems a bit difficult to find the correct certified shop.

So if anybody have info on this, I'd be very glad.

Thank you.

I have Aperture 3.5.1 (build 736.3) which should be the latest update.

Wondering if there might be some preferences on the camera that could have anything to do with this?

When I import photos into Aperture from my Pentax K-3 with the FA 31mm f/1.8 AL Limited, the info on this lens does not automatically show up under the Info-tab of each photo - shown on image below. The info on the camera is there, though.

Is it not possible to have the lens info shown at the pictures in Aperture? The possibility seems to be there. I have of course been into Preferences of the program, but could not find any possibility for this.

Tips & tricks for FA 31mm Limited

On one of my first tours with the FA 31mm Ltd. I was so lucky to meet this beautiful fellow. What kind of butterfly it will turn into is unknown to me. What I do know is that it was taken at f/1.8, 1/800 sec (there was a wind, larva was waving hither and thither), and ISO 100. My first photographic rookie contribution to this phorum, ahem ;)

Tips & tricks for FA 31mm Limited

Hi forum members,

I recently bought a Pentax FA 31mm Limited for my K-3 and I'm very fond of this combination. I am, however, aware that also this lens has to be learned to use. Recently I wrote another forum member if he had any good advice on using this particular lens. He had two good advices which I thought was really useful:

- The lens excels at f1.8 - f2.5 at midrange if the background is far behind the focus....that gives it subtle bokeh - not too smooth, but enough that you can feel separation of focused object

- It is also good at infinity stopped down to f8-f11, that is especially nice for landscapes ....

Now, my aim with this thread is to gather all kinds of tips and tricks with the wonderful Pentax FA 31mm Limited for sharing. I myself am still a rookie, so it will be very little I can contribute with. Hopefully this will change as time passes on.

So please, feel free :)

I should also mention the prices I paid:

- FA 31mm Limited Silver Edition - €889 (which is actually considerably lower as their price for the conventional black edition at €999)
- DA* 60-250mm ED (IF) SDM - €997

There were no extra charges for postage & handling to Denmark, where I live.

I think I overreacted in the beginning of this thread because I was a bit nervous due to the inadequate and confusing communication delivered by the transportation company www.geis-group.sk - although, as it turned out, they actually performed quite well on the transportation itself.

However, www.pentax.sk themselves have been marvelous, very kind, helpful when needed. I mailed them several times during the confusion with the transportation company and they helped clear up things - very forthcoming, I must say. No problems whatsoever - on the contrary. The lenses are in mint condition and with their guaranty papers in good order. They have my best recommendation.

I initially mailed them with a request on the FA 31mm Limited Silver Edition, as I have a Pentax K-3 Silver Edition and would like a color match. At first they didn't know of a Silver edition of this lens, but I convinced them by mailing a Pentax link on the item. They then ordered it for me rather quickly, in Japan I guess. Seen in retrospective all in all a nicely performed and smootly conducted "operation" making me a happy customer.

FA 31mm Ltd. on K-3: Focal length disappears on LCD

This rookie has run into a new situation while testing a brand new FA 31mm Ltd. on Pentax K-3.

When the aperture ring is turned away from Auto (e.g. to f/5.6), the indication for aperture also disappears on LCD-screen and in the seeker. There is just the letter F and two lines - no numbers showing the chosen aperture.

I guess that's normal, as you're supposed to know what value you yourself just set the aperture to on the lens. But as I'm not sure (as there could be an indication showing what f-value you've chosen) I just air this question.

Does anybody know the situation?

Thank you.

I'm happy to announce that my new FA 31mm f1.8 Ltd. Silver edition and DA* 60-250mm f4 this very morning has arrived in mint condition - one day before expected! It's a sunny day here and I'm taking both out for a delightful stroll. Thank you, www.pentax.sk !
