Yes, it was the Box Brownie.
I was born before the middle of last century, but I'm not quite a century old yet.

It is a fairly long story of how I came to own a Pentax K-500.
My first camera was a Box Camera, so that dates me a bit doesn't it. Around that time or soon after, I also had access to a Rolleiflex and a Rolliecord.
My first SLR was an Exa. Who remembers them? It was a cheap body that would take all the Exakta lenses. As I had friends with Exaktas and some good lenses and close-up tubes, I had access to some telephoto lenses at minimal cost.
My first Pentax was an ME Super and because it was bought duty free, I felt I could afford to choose the f1.4 50mm lens instead of the standard f1.7.
It is only a couple years since I last used the ME Super, but I had been thinking of a DSLR for a while.
When I discovered that I could use my old 50mm, 28mm and zoom lenses with a Pentax DSLR, I decided it was time to move into the 21st century. I had been hesitating partly because I just hated the idea of my old equipment being made redundant. At least I could continue to use the old lenses.
My research convinced me that the K-30 was the camera I wanted and could afford, but by the time I worked that out, the K-30 had been superseded.
At first I thought that was a good thing as I expected to be able to get one at a discounted price. However, it didn't seem possible to get the camera and lens combination that I wanted, either online or in a shop, so I did a bit more research on the K-50 and K-500.
I thought there wasn't much point in paying for a weather sealed camera unless I also fitted a weather sealed lens.
Then it occurred to me that I had never felt the need for a weather sealed camera in the 30 or so years I had been using the ME Super, so I decided I could manage with the K-500 rather than the K-50.
As I had a couple of good lenses, I decided to settle for the very basic 18-55 kit lens.
Coincidentally, the K-500 cost almost exactly the same number of dollars as the ME Super back in about 1980. By the time allowance is made for inflation, that makes the K-500 pretty good value.
Anyway, that is what I bought and I am happy with it. In fact, I am more than happy. I am delighted and impressed.
