If you're in sensor cleaning mode, then it should have told you "mirror up". Also, I think it'll tell you if your battery is too low.

I think the damage is caused when you put the battery in. It's a bad design fault IMO. There is no ramp notch on the battery to guide it in. On a cold day you're more then likely to force the battery down onto the tag. I've always had doubts about this design and I'm extra careful.

I've tried to "grey out" the movie SR with a Tamron 70-300 lens without success. Tried most combinations. I'll assume all 4 of my Pentax lens are the same (tried the 35 and 18-55). Firmware is 1.05.
Might need a firmware update and a reset to factory settings.

Can I just say, that's impressive on both picture quality and surviving those harsh conditions. I loved the night shots.
I've a K-30 and I panic if speck of dust lands on the lens.

Use camerapricebuster website and check daily. It searches for UK stock (no grey imports). WEX has a free Flu card and free next day delivery as well as being cheapest. I'll wait until after Photokina before commiting myself to either a K-3 or Sony A7.

I had the same problem, the blower and even the shutdown shake didn't shift the spots. So I researched and bought a DSLR sensor cleaning brush for a APS-C sensor. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000LQQQZQ/?tag=hotoge-20
It worked for me, but I'm no expert. The reason I bought the brush was because I could take it on holiday along with the blower. I wouldn't be tempted to swab the sensor in any place except my home. Hope that helps, but someone will always come along with a better answer ;-)

I've a Sandisk Extreme 16gb, so it's not a cheapy card. But, what you mentioned about sleep mode is interesting. As I'd been thinking along the lines of a battery fault. If the fault does happen again I'll investigate much better.

I'm also going to the TdF next weekend with the K30. I'll use the 35mm (Plastic Fantastic). If you're shooting from the start line or finish line use a 55-300. But if you on a steep section there's crowds of people and you'll need a wide angle like a Sigma 10-20mm. Riders go very fast so set the camera to continuous shooting (hi) and hope for the best. Previous road races have shown me spectators get in the way if you're not careful. Here's my viewing position of the lens I would take (if I had them)
55-300 -> start, finish lines. Outside corners. Straight roads. Bridges or high positions.
wide angle-> inside a corner, steep hill climbs.
You'll have 2 days in Yorkshire to perfect your craft, . Allez Allez

Strangely, I had a very recent problem with the genuine Pentax battery. The problem is I'm not sure what happened. I always make sure my K30 is switched off after use (plus I have sensor clean when switching off so there's a physical feel). Living next to a river I sometimes grab the camera and click away at a passing boat or ship. This time the battery was stone dead. I was sure it was charged. Was probably less then 24 hours since I last used it as well. Replaced the battery for a spare (non original) and all was OK. Recharged the Pentax one and so far OK.
Totally stumped me why it discharged so quickly, but accepted it as "just one of those things". Will be interested in any other replies.

Just want to say guys/gals I've loved looking at loads of 300mm + photos. Don't want to single anyone out, but really loved many of the shots. Much appreciated.

I hate confusing, but remember there are 2 Pentax mounts the K mount and the much older M42 which some secondhand places still refer to as "Pentax mount". The K mount is a bayonet fitting and the M42 is screw fitting. I was once confused 30 years ago, but I've now got the hang of it.

Never used that type of camera in my ice age, but at a quick (and wild) guess it might need a rewinding if there's a spring device in there to protect it from advancing a roll too far and snapping it.

John Lewis is a good department store. It's workers are also shareholders so have a vested interest in keeping standards up high. My next door neighbour used to work for them but has since left so I can't get any staff discounts Boo hoo. The York store as mentioned above has only just opened so most of the staff will have little experience of the John Lewis group.
Apart from specialist camera shops, this might be the next best if you don't like buying online. Jessops has a recent bankruptcy problem and many don't like the Curry/PC World stores. Any warranty problems should be easily sorted.

I couldn't believe the price of the K-01. No wonder it sold out so quickly.

For us in the UK, Currys have at the moment 35mm DA f/2.4 lens for sale at £129.98 inc free delivery. They only sell a very limited range of lens for Pentax and as usual for the store prices can change as quickly as the wind blows. I've ordered on and hope to use it for the weekend.

Yes, I do understand the lens needed etc. The main thing I was thinking and I should have tried to explain better, was the exposure issues especially in the UK, We have modern buildings to castles to pre roman, as a beginner in DSLR I know it's good to have experience, but the whole point in Scene modes to to "help" the beginner. As I see it, we have landscape + contrast + Sky all in one. OK, I could work it out eventually with time and expeience :-) , the exposure/speed etc, but sometimes in the rich environment I live in (Northern England) we sometimes need a quick helper. If you look at all the other Scene modes you could argue you could 1. lens correction. 2. user mode. 3 lens etc. Why are they 3 night modes for example? Do people really need surf/snow mode rather then building. So the question still remains, why isn't there an architectural scene mode just for the quick shot?
LOL, don't worry, this is just a very minor grumble. It was only on boxing day when I photographed Bamburgh castle I realised the problem.

Only recently bought the K-30. But, what has occurred to me is that it's missing an "architecture" scene mode. OK, many of you might be experienced and don't use scene modes, but for quickness it's really useful for me. One of the most popular uses of photography is photographing buildings modern and old. Having looked at the scene modes, none of them really are useful for buildings. Have I missed something from the manual? Any ideas why there's no scene mode?

Cheers for the welcome everyone.
Yes, I did mean weather resistant rather then "water" :-)
Good idea about the extra battery in cold weather as my compacts usually are in my chest pocket and fairly warm.

Just introducing myself and trying to understand the rules of the website guys and gals.
I'm 54 years old and have used Pentax type mounts for many years, but never actually a Pentax camera ( nearly bought a K1000). First used a Russian SLR with a M42 mount where I learnt a great deal. next I bought a state of the art (at the time) Ricoh XRX with it's pentax K mount 50mm lens and a Sigma 70-210. This lasted for many years until a fateful encounter with Welsh weather. Despite a water-resistant bag and a plastic bag, the camera became waterlogged on a walk on Carnedd Llewelyn in dreadful rain.
After this I bought a Canon S70 compact and a few other compacts until last month when I bought a (hopefully) water - resistant K-30 with a 18-55 WR lens. So, now I'm back with DSLR. Yipeee!!
My speciality is walking in the UK, especially Scotland or the Lake Dictrict. Many of a time I wished I had a good winter camera. Hope I don't disappoint if I post a few pics in the future.
Oh just as an aside, I'm a Geordie. Those in the UK will know what that means LOL....ie, I talk a strange English dialect that descends from Vikings, Irish and Scots.
Thanks for reading this.
