Pentax K-r amazing battery life

Just fired off over 300 shots of waves, surfers, fishing boats, seagulls, cormorants and pelicans in flight, and one squirrel (not in flight), mainly just to see what the camera would do. Never missed a moment. Caught full range of wing motion and positions in flying birds. Long and short bursts, no waiting for write or save. (I use viewfinder, not "live view" and I also use a Class 10 card; maybe that helps.) Even shot a brief test video. And the battery is still holding up ( exactly what they say in specification: Pentax K-r ). This is a very good camera for action shooting.

I'm very happy with this camera. Images are crisp, colors are nice without any adjustment, zoom is great. There are a lot of upgrades over the k-x. I got lucky and got the k-r kit for only $100 more than the k-x kit. Otherwise I wouldn't have bought it, and frankly, I would have missed out. I'm keeping the Fuji S100 also; it has cable remote and takes great pictures at all ranges. But it doesn't have the same burst capability.

K-x and HD captures

I recently got the Pentax K-x in Black. I can't say enough about this wonderful camera. I've been shooting with SLRs for 25 years now, and this is the finest one I have ever used. It is such a pleasure to hold and use. You feel like you are holding something very special, as the build quality is top notch. The HD video feature is awesome, too. I've been tinkering around with HD video on my PC for a couple of years now, so I know all about the formats of HD. You are going to need a computer with a bit of muscle under the hood to be able to play your HD videos. I recommend a dual core processor. That should be enough to handle, playing your HD captures( litle help on K-x video review: Videoclips about Pentax K-x Digital Camera ). It shoots video in the .avi format. And if you like to upload to YouTube, it works just fine. YouTube actually recognizes the video as being HD, and thus allows it to be played in their HD player. The other thing I love about this camera, is the RAW format. It lets you choose between the Pentax RAW (PEF), or the highly used .DNG (Digital Negative) format, which is so very versatile. I like shooting in .dng, since it's non proprietary, and Adobe Photoshop has no problem with it. As for the picture quality, and camera settings, they are what you would expect to be with any DSLR. I've always been a Canon guy, but couldn't resist this little gem. I'm so glad I opted for the Pentax, and have no regrets.

all i can say is WOW, great value for money it is just brilliant for new wanabe photographers, it is a good price it has a fantastic 26xx zoom and is not to bulky, I like the fact that it is a point and shoot camera but you can also play with the settings and do manual focus etc. I am not planing on being a profetional photographer but this is all you will ever need for family photos and is also good at long shot photos of the family pet and the birds they are chasing

Pentax K-5 - buffer limit problem !!!

This is the fastest and most accurately focusing camera Pentax has ever built, easily in line with Canon and Nikon's offerings in the price range. One small disappointment is that the fast focus and 7 fps capture rate makes the camera suitable for sports and wildlife photography, but the camera has a somewhat limited buffer. The 40 frames of JPEG is reasonable (the example is in video review: Videoclips about Pentax K-5 Digital Camera ) but the 15 image RAW buffer is a bit cramped. But then Pentax doesn't make the long lenses for that kind of photography anyway. Though Sigma does make some with Pentax mounts. With the few ballgame or bird photos I take, I haven't found the buffer limit to be a problem.

Pentax W90 - noise at higher ISOs

The feel of the W90 is great, feels good in the hands and the operation buttons are placed well. There are plenty of settings for all shooting modes. I feel for a point and shoot camera the picture quality is way above average. I think most people who by point shoots expect SLR quality photos, which is not the case.

This is a great camera to take photos in all conditions and does it very well. There is noise at higher ISOs ( you can see it on the video: Videoclips about Pentax Optio W90 Digital Camera ), but that is to be expected with just about any camera. Cool design that is fun to use!!! I love the fast start up and plenty of shooting options. The microscope option really works, you can get to 1cm away and has clear focus. I did take it in the pool with me a few days ago and all dry inside, no leaks.

Pentax K-x far out performs the k20 at ISO 1600

I chose the K-x over the K7 because of its low light performance(being half the price helps as well). I have read reveiws that state the K7 performs slightly worse than the k20 at high ISO levels. Being an owner of a k20, I can state that the K-x far out performs the k20 at ISO 1600 ( check it on the video review: Videoclips about Pentax K-x Digital Camera ) . This camera is perfect for shooting pictures of people and settings where a flash would be considered intrusive. Its relatively fast focus speeds and hd video make this camera the perfect tool for capturing those special moments with my friends and family. I think you can get more candid shots when you don't have a flash announcing that a camera is present. I still prefer my k20 for more formal photograpy where a "hands on" approach is desired, but for everyday use, and at this price, I think the k-x is hard to beat.

K-5 / K-7 : eight raw buffer limit exists
Posted By gubak
Replies: 54
My theory about why the eight raw buffer limit exists (also with an accordingly low JPEG buffer limit) at maximum continuous rate is Pentax's typical conservative specification policy and the existence of these extremely high maximum ISO's in extended ISO mode. To me, it makes sense that the actual raw buffer limit is just proportionally less than that of the K-7 considering the larger pixel dimensions and the faster continuous shooting speed, such that 15 raw captures would seem to be about right for exactly the same shooting environment and ISO sensitivity settings. However, there very well might be only eight raw captures possible for worst case raw files sizes where the maximum raw file size at ISO 51,200 could be as large as 35 MBytes or so.

Thus, there is no discrepancy between the performance of the K-7 and this new K-5 ( as "Which" website says in its video review: Videoclips about Pentax K-5 Digital Camera ), and only confusion about the conditions under which that limit applies.

The K-x K-r and K-5

Considering where they prices this camera, and the fact that it is touted as the mid-level Pentax, it is quite probable that they will keep the K-x as entry, K-r as mid and K-5 as advanced (Mike Lows editor of WhatDigitalCamera said something similar in its hands-on preview: Videoclips about Pentax K-r Digital Camera ) . That will leave the K-7 as a discontinued model.

Pentax K-x: Slow focus!

I owned it briefly and returned it. The battery issue was very bothering. Pentax should have done a better job before releasing. I returned it before the new firmware was release so I am not sure it fixes the problem. Two things I don't like through my limited use. 1)ver slow focus in low light in Live view 2)load shutter click ( it is presented on the third video : Videoclips about Pentax K-x Digital Camera ). I understand some don't care. But one of the advantages of using a DSLR is its low light capability...for indoor activities. In many such instances the loud click sound is annoying. I got a Canon T1i instead. It costs a bit more, not much. But I got it during the Thanksgiving for about the same price. The Canon fitted with a Tamron 18-270mm weight, about the same of the Pentax fitted with a Tamron 18-250mm lens.

Same pixel count and same image sensor size as the newly announced Mamiya MF digital. But Mamiya has 16 bit color and penatx only has 14 bit (here are the 645D specification: Pentax 645D specification ). How did pentax lose 2 bits of color if the image sensor is the same which is seems likely it is? Maybe this is how pentax is able to sell the camera for so cheap compared to Mamiya.

K-x - "make it or break it" for Pentax

Well, the K-x is based on the same body design as the K-m, which isn't weather-resistant either. To add weather sealing to this body would require a lot of re-engineering and probably didn't fit in with their time/cost plan for the K-x release.

To many this would appear to be an apparent step back from their nature/outdoors strategy given how much they pushed the weather and cold-resistant abilities of the K-7, as well as the weather-sealed kit lenses that were introduced along with it. But considering the financial environment we have seen in this past year, as well as the uncertainties that Hoya management had regarding where to take Pentax, I don't think we could expect them to introduce a new line of weather-sealed bodies in this time. So given this, I think the fact that the K-x is not weather-sealed is understandable (check at the : official Pentax K-x video), though obviously it's not desireable nor ideal.

That said, the K-x is a very pleasant surprise to me, and I suspect it's taken more than a few others by surprise too. Could this be the "make it or break it" for Pentax? Anyways, its success will bode well for Pentax (and us) for the next few years, and hopefully we'll see a more complete line of weather-sealed bodies and lenses in the near future.

Pentax K200D's disadvantage: viewfinder !
Posted By gubak

I upgraded from the K100D to the K200D and I have to say it's worth it. Not because of the 10MP sensor but it's even more feature-rich than the K100D. I especially like the self-cleaning sensor ( see at Pentax K200D reviews ) since I live in AZ where it's very dusty and keeping my sensor clean on the K100D was a huge chore. I plan on trip down the Rogue River in OR this summer so the weatherproofing should be very handy. But most of all I do seem to take a cleaner picture with this camera noticed that I do less PP'ing with these pictures.

Excellent value for the money. Great camera for the beginner. Lots of excellent good quality lenses available for reasonable prices on Ebay.
The only complaint I have is the viewfinder. Even with the 1.2x adapter I have a hard time manual focusing with my older lenses.

Pentax K-M is a travel dslr

The K-M is about the same size as a DS, so nothing new in that department, though granted it is much lighter. But just as important as size and weight are the grip ergonomics (I felt quite comfortable walking around with the DS without a strap, something I can't say about the K100D). Unfortunately the preview implies that the grip on the KM is not a strong point.

The weight saving in the kit lens bothers me slightly too. One would hope that optically and mechanically it's as good as the non-L version.

I can't help feeling that the KM is really milking the K10D/K200D line dry, times are moving on at this level and it'll be competing head to head with a very appealing Pana G1 in the entry level market. Two very different products with different ancestry. Interesting times!

Pentax K2000 / K-m - right way Pentax

The K-m marks the 1st good looking Pentax DSLR for me. I never care for the mono-top LCD much. In the film days, it is the only way to see your information and is required. But today with massive 2.5 - 3" LCD, I can get more visual information without straining my eyes.

I believe Konica Minolta 5D was the 1st DSLR ditching the top LCD, followed by Rebel XTi, then Nikon finally got into the act with their D40/D40x/D60 lines. I'm glad Pentax is finally on board. If you want to sell well in this entry-level market, ditching the old look is required.

Serious Professional camera will probably always retained their top mono-lcd:
the Canon 5DII, Canon 50D, Nikon D700/D300/D90, Pentax K20 etc...

But entry-level should shred this bulk for smaller design, like the:

Canon XSi/XS, Nikon D40/D40x/D60, Olympus 420/520, Sony A200, and now Pentax K-m.

I hope the USD price is reasonable, I buy one to see how the pentax world feel like.

Here is a nice place for exploring Pentax K-m: Pentax K2000 / K-m info page

About the new Pentax DA 17-70mm SDM Lens

PENTAX DA 17-70mm f/4 AL [IF] SDM Lens Announced

One noteworthy change compared to Pentax's pro-grade DA* lenses with SDM is the use of the KAF3 (rather than previous SDM lenses' KAF2) lens mount on the 17-70mm. The KAF3 mount is almost functionally identical to the KAF2, with two contacts driving the internal focusing motor, but the new mount eliminates the secondary focus drive option via the body's focusing motor found on KAF2 lenses. Hence, rather than reverting to body-driven auto focus on older Pentax bodies (anything further back than the K10D or K100D Super), the new DA 17-70mm is manual focus only in these applications.

While users with older Pentax digital bodies may be disappointed at the loss of AF compatibility with the latest lens, the move to KAF3 spells good news for current Pentax shooters: outside of its dimunitive DA Limited glass (which will retain body-driven AF), look for new lenses from the manufacturer to feature SDM focus drive exclusively going forward.

Pentax K20D ratings ~ 4.5 - 5.0

My reasons for rating this camera as 4.5/5.0 ---classification.

1. construction: very well built - sturdy body. Buttons at in areas that are easy to reach. The screen is bold and colourful.

2. features: nicely presented - as what is to be found on a pro series SLR camera.

3. Image quality: This is where I honestly have to say - I'm taken! I have a Nikon D300 and I have to say that this Pentax K20D camera not only performs better in some cases than the D300 in terms of noise- but the colours on the Pentax are brighter and bolder too. Amazing... you'll just have to go and and see for yourselves. Remarkable.... and eye opening!

Value for money....

Here is a great pleace to find more about Pentax K20D

You can't beat the price for the quality... not at all!

Pentax Optio Z10 problems at high ISO
Posted By gubak
Replies: 1
This camera is one of the few P&S cameras that sports a longer than usual 7x optical zoom within the body of the camera rather than extending outside of it. Image quality outside is decent when used at ISO 64 and 100. Indoor flash pictures are good as long as you shoot from ISO 64-200. Above that, noise is quite apparent. There are the usual preprogrammed scene functions for different shooting conditions, including a novel digital wide shot that allows you to shoot two vertically held shots and blend them together into one wide shot a la mini-panorama. The 7x zoom is quite useful and the fact that the lens does not extend beyond the camera makes it one of the smallest with this capability. Here are the complete feature list: Pentax Optio Z10 overview

Problems:

The only problem I've seen is the marginal image performance indoors at ISOs higher than 200.

Pentax K20D experiences

If you liked the K10D you will love this camera, Pentax are at last getting things right, well almost.

The auto white balance is much improved even in warm lighting and the exposure seems much more accurate but beware this camera will blow highlights. Noise in RAW images, is different to what I have been used to with other Pentax DSLR’s. Excellent at ISO100 but very visible at ISO200 so you expect it to be unusable at ISO1600 / 3200 but it is not, it is very good. The new in camera noise reduction for JPG images seems to work very well.

Focus accuracy seems much better and the ability to be able to adjust for DA lens is great but needs to be done with care.

Is this the first Pentax DSLR that will produce great JPG images straight from the box?

(Very) Highly Recommended ! It is a great camera.

Here you can see some K20D video reviews: Videoclips about Pentax K20D Digital Camera

Problems:

Focusing accuracy still affected by light temperature.

The Expand Dynamic Range function as far as I can tell only works in JPG where it gives up to one stop of protection from burning highlights.

Like the K10 when it was first introduced, there is an error in DNG files that cause Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom to indicate inaccurate image colour temperature. With DNG files this makes the use of the standard Lightroom settings for daylight etc, unusable and it displays incorrect value for green / magenta tint. PEF files are not affected.
