If they don't have their current customers then they didn't have any customers,it's not likely Pentax will be pulling customers from Sony, Canon, Fuji or Nikon

Pentax needs to set itself up as the 21st century Leica.
They aren't going to ever have the numbers that will allow them to compete with Sony or Canon or Nikon. I doubt if they will ever have the numbers to compete in the volume game with anyone at this point, so they need to set themselves up as a premium brand with significant cachet value.
I'm seeing this as the direction they are taking. They aren't bothering to design mundane lenses anymore, from the looks of it, instead they seem content to partner with third party brands. The in house designs are now premium quality lenses, and they are commanding premium quality prices.
They can't pimp themselves as a competitor for Canikony, but they can set themselves up as the brand to buy if you want something better. No, it's not going to garner big sales volumes, but I didn't see that hurting Leica for the half century between when Japanese SLRs started dominating the market and the end of film.
The volume game, no matter what market segment, is dependent on being able to sell large amounts of whatever is being peddled for low markups, with the sales volumes being responsible for recovering development costs. The volume game in the camera market is now owned by companies like Apple and Samsung with cell phones being the vehicle to support the sales of new cameras. Volume sales in cameras have become a rump of the cell phone game.
Don't pay too much heed to what Sony, Canon or Nikon is flogging into the low end camera market, all they are doing now is fighting over the few scraps that are left on a dead horse. When the bones are picked clean, they will be forced to move on.
Ricoh appears to have already recognized this fact and is moving on.

Love to see a poll of the number of people WHO will not buy the K3III because its missing an adjustable rear screen, surely Pentax did research on this in designing the camera.

I believe how bright their future is will depend on how many K3III they sell and I think that may depend on what the price is. If its north of 2k I believe that will be a BIG problem.

(Given the quality of the K-3 III), shouldn't we wait until the camera is out before calling it amazing and have it reviewed by people who don't have a financial interest in the camera?

Yes I'm one of the people that want a flipping screen but your correct the design is baked in to late to change. THEY NEED A NEW CAMERA TO BE RELEASED SOON.

Indeed, I bought my first Pentax ME Super in 1982 but like you Pentax need to replace users like us, that why I believe no adjustable rear screen was a miss. Young people just expect a new camera to have this today. Doubt any other camera released in 2021 is missing the adjusted rear screen.

I see pictures on youtube with all the auto tracking (27) led up when auto focus tracking is on, is that right? My camera has never done is and tracking has always been a mystery to me.
