Shame.
I guess nowadays, 3D printing could potentially make replacement parts more available. With no-one manufacturing film cameras, the numbers of film shooters growing fast, eventually the prices of vintage gear will rise to the point where it will become worthwhile, at least for certain desirable models. I think the world needs a few decent Z-1s around.
Having said that, I’m still not sure that the split cog issue is what is causing my problem. It’s gone from operating perfectly to not moving at all with no sense of anything breaking or failing gradually. There is no slight movement, the mirror is just completely still. Also it seems that the split cog tends result in the mirror sticking up? I still have a feeling that it could just be a dry joint/loose connection.

I actually had just bought a z-1p (ebaying in my sleep again) which works well, so I was going to sell it. I think it must’ve suspected and decided not to work to spite me!
I just wondered if anyone had any bright ideas for a quick fix. I could just list it as spares or repair. Or if anyone wants a project PM me……

Err.. before it stopped working?
I didn’t drop it if that’s what your asking. Shot a film: fine, shot another film: not fine.

Before the camera was fully functional. Now the mirror doesn’t flip up when you press the button. That’s it……. The shutter, and everything else, still works.

Hi,
The mirror on my Z-1 is not moving.
It was working fine before, but I put a film through it and it came out unexposed.
The battery is reasonably fresh. Everything powers up ok.
I can lift it manually easily enough and nothing seems loose or out of shape. It just isn’t flipping. With no lens, the shutter opens and stays open for a few seconds, with a lens it operates normally except the mirror.
The only things I can find online relate to the mirror return cog which commonly splits on some of the MZ models. However, that seems to result in the mirror sticking up? Is it the same mechanism in the Z-1?
Is it a bin job? Just got a feeling it would be an easy fix for a good tech, but our local camera dealer is into the good ole mechanical stuff and doesn’t do repairs on AF models.
Any clues?

I read a page talking about how many modern lenses have too many corrective elements, which sacrifices depth for sharpness. I was wondering about this in relation to my 16-85mm (16 elements) compared to the 20-40mm (9). I have certainly felt that the 16-85 can look a bit flat and boring in some situations, so I got the 20-40mm and sure enough it has more 3D depth. However, I realised that my A35-105mm has 15 elements and has incredible pop. Kinda blows that theory.
I do think that there must be design factors which give some lenses 3D pop. My lens collection has tended towards these. The SMC 40mm lim, 77mm lim, are great, as is the 20-40mm. The 15mm lim has lots of pop although possibly due to perspective and punchy colours more than anything else. But I have to say for some reason it’s the older lenses that really give the best "walk into the picture" 3D effect. The 35-105 as mentioned is my best 3D zoom, but also the 50mm 1.7, and the tip top 3D kings the Takumar 35mm 3.5 and the (8 element not 7!) Super Tak 50 1.4. Oh aye, you want 3D? Can’t beat a Tak.
