K-500 aperture control block failure - how screwed am I?

I've had the camera since late 2013, so 5k a year isn't too bad. It sat unused for about a month before the issue occurred.

UPDATE:

Pentax UK want £120 to fix it, and have outright denied that this is an inherent issue with these cameras - interesting, considering it takes 5 seconds of googling to see lots of people with this exact problem. Anyone know where I can order a new aperture solenoid that won't die after 10k clicks?

If Pentax won't fix it for a reasonable price, this is probably the route I'll take. Might have to get someone else to handle the soldering job though ;)

Hmm, I could try sanding down the solenoid, as a few people have done - I know it's only a temporary fix, but it would work until I can pick up a soldering iron and replace the part. I've tried to unstick the actuator to no avail, and my camera has a relatively high shutter count for its age (17k).

I guess I'll call Pentax UK tomorrow and see what they say.

Any idea how much they'd charge in the UK?

Hi all,

My Pentax K-500 has experienced the dreaded aperture solenoid failure after a few years of otherwise perfect service. Considering this is a known issue, how much luck am I going to have getting Pentax to fix this, and if not, what are my options? I'm not really in much of a position to replace my camera right now, so having it stay broken would not be ideal.

Thanks
Toby

Best ultrawide for Pentax?

APS-C is fine, and i dont mind whether it's a zoom or prime as long as it's sharp. Will have a gander now thanks mate.

I will have a look at that now. Is there much distortion at the 17mm end on that fisheye? Struggling to see the point though if my 18mm almost matches the 17mm focal length wise.

Hi guys, I've been looking for a decent ultrawide for Pentax K mount, but have come up short. It doesn't have to be Pentax branded, and price isn't too much of a concern (though it should still be reasonable!), just as long as it meters on my camera - I can live without AF, and don't mind adapting other brand lenses to my camera. Thanks in advance.

A new 645Z rumor

If Pentax were doomed, as you put it, people wouldn't buy anything from them at all, but that seems obviously not to be the case if a camera that went on sale not long ago has already sold out. What makes you think they're doomed?

I'm going out for another shoot tomorrow on the streets.
How's the K-5? I'm looking to upgrade to something similar and get some nice glass now that I have a steady income, maybe a K-3, but still debating whether it's the right choice, to relegate a 6-month old camera (K-500) to being a backup camera seems a little strange.

Thank you! I really like your portfolio, as someone who does a fair bit of photography in forests and built-up areas. Shot on Pentax, I assume. ;)

Please tell me what you guys think.
Note: The shutter speed was actually 1/5000s, but the shutter speed drop-down menu does not have a selection for 1/5000s, so I picked the closest thing.

Haha. You guys have me in stitches.
If I were to date any lens, I'd totally hook up with a DA* 55mm. Perfect lens for my photographic (and relationship) needs.
Joking aside, I just killed my own thread.

Hi, fellow Pentaxians,
I'd like to know when one of my lenses was manufactured. I just picked up a smc FA 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 for my K-500 (basically pristine condition for £25!) and one of my friends asked me if I knew when it was manufactured. This interested me also. Is there any definite way of telling when a lens was manufactured? The s/n is 5003914.
Thanks,
Toby

It might have something to do with metering. Have you tried setting your movie exposure to M mode and locking your aperture, shutter speed, white balance and ISO at preset values?

Autofocus can be a little unpredictable in low-light depending on your setup and what you're shooting.
Is the AF assist lamp on? This can help a lot with autofocusing in low light.

Sorry to hear about your camera.
Is the item covered under Argos' 30 day guarantee? If so, go ahead and get it exchanged. Either the LCD is physically damaged or the data connector for the LCD has become slightly disconnected, just enough to cause this.

K-500 sensor/lens dust issue?

If it is sensor dust, would the dust still appear in the images if there is no lens mounted? I've noticed that it does not show up with no lens mounted.
Thanks to those who have responded.

Noticed some particle in my photos and videos shot with the kit lens. I don't have any other lenses on hand to test, so I don't know what it is. I don't see anything on the sensor though.

You Tube

Notice how the particle changes shape as I zoom in/out.
Is there anything I can do?
Thank you in advance.

Took this not too long ago, hope you enjoy :)
Gear and Settings: Pentax K-500, smc PENTAX-DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL, 1/250 @ f/3.5, 18mm, ISO 200, -1 exposure comp.
Just goes to show what the cheaper cameras can do I guess.
What inspired me to take this photo: I loved the way the light was shining through the trees, and so I snapped this after setting -1 EV comp. Kinda regretting not shooting this in RAW so I could enhance it a little in post (this image is untouched) but what can you do. :p
EDIT: Sorry guys, I should have resized the image before posting it. My bad, I'll get the hang of this forum thing eventually. ;-)

Problems metering with manual lenses on K-500

The camera is set up as per those settings.

That can't be good. As I've said I've submitted a support ticket to Ricoh, here's hoping it's good news.
I should probably also mention the camera is running the latest firmware version as of almost a week ago.

Ah, thanks for the insight. Is there any way I can set the flash power manually? I'd quite like to shoot wide open most of the time - the main reason for buying this lens was for portraiture and it's no good forgoing the flash and having shadows all over the subject's face, that's not how I like my portraits to look.
I'm thinking of buying a Yongnuo YN-560 III sooner or later which allows me to adjust flash output among other things.

Uh oh. I'll try and get a video of it next time it happens.
It doesn't seem as though it's completely freezing up, the shutter speed/aperture readings on the status screen flash when it happens, so it seems as though the camera is waiting on something to happen.
I've submitted a support request to Ricoh, just to verify if there is a problem with my camera.
I should also probably mention this has never happened with the kit lens.
