Somehow I like this pic sans much colour.... but with heightened details and a strong contrast.

To emphasise at the dramatic quotient of the location, I tried to erase distraction of the vivid colours and light patterns. There is something not quite soft about this place - it is jagged, hard and unforgiving. There is an element of danger and ruthlessness about it and to accentuate the danger I chose to go monochrome.. this version i finaly decided to go with...with balancing of contrast increment, shadow enhancement and toning down the highlights.

Well five lenses got added and two substracted since my previous post a few days ago - I'm now at an even steven number of a dozen and I think I'm going to stay under 15 and quite possibly in some years when I'm over LBA , I'll come down to seven max. From now I've decided to sell one if I buy one. That pic of boriscleto with his motherload actually did the trick for me - I realised the futility of going down that alley !! Might as well well have 5 great primes and 2 or 3 great zooms rather than a room full of glass that's hardly ever used.

Vivitar MC 28-210mm 3.5-5.6 Macro Focussing Zoom

Thanks for coming in Joe, ... yes, it is an 'A' lens and it has been mounted on the 'A' setting as well, - the lens seems to be working all fine and I even took it out for a brief while for a check after my initial post as the sun was out of the clouds again.. and I seem to like its colors and sharpness is pretty acceptable too - so It's a working lens in every way - just that although its largest aperture is 3.5 and should be 5.6 at the longest FL, I can wheel down a reading on my camera till 2.4 !!!! - right from 28mm till zoomed out at 210mm FL !!!
I'm a bit flummoxed - there seems to be something wrong somewhere ! (The smallest aperture is 22 and thankfuly my camera doesn't give a reading beyond that !! :) )
With my other zooms I am getting the correct designated apertures when on 'A' - with the exception on the Pentax - A (non smc) 28-80mm 3.5, - my k5II gives me the largest aperture reading on this lens of 4.0..

But I'm quite surprised with the reading I'm getting on the Vivitar - would love to know why.

I seem to keep running into and coming here with strange situations... here's the latest one !:D

Just got the Vivitar (Cosina) 28-210 mm 3.5-5.6 (Non AF & Non Series 1) off ebay at a throwaway ( well ..almost) price.
Haven't taken it out for any serious trials just yet ... it's just sitting right beside me mounted on the K5II...and I've only taken afew shots out of my window - today being overcast - is perhaps hard to tell how good or not it is. I reckon this Vivitar is made by Cosina as the serial number starts with 09....

The strange thing I noticed right away about this lens is that it gives me a reading of 2.4 right uptill the 210mm FL !!! It's supposed to be 3.5.-5.6 !!
Anyone have any opinions on why it could be so ??

ChristianRock - the link you posted is exactly the one I mistakenly read assuming it was for the one i was about to buy- mine is the non smc version which has pretty mixed reviews. The review of the one I got myself is this -
Pentax-A 28-80mm F3.5-4.5 Reviews - Non-SMC Pentax Zoom Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database.

Unfortunately on that review thread there is only one reviewer who has apparently used itwith the modern DSLR, which is why I wished to get some more feedback - especially about getting he maximum aperture reading of 4 inspite of the lens being 3.5 !

AAAH - phew !!! all you guys owning lenses in those crazy double digits REALLY make me sigh in relief !!
So now I really have a long long way to go before that feeling of being a lens junkie surfaces again !! and to think I have been drowning in this horrid feeling for the past two months !! :)
I have only 9 so far and another one is set to arrive in a day or two so I will make it to double digits too ( a modest one ) !! :)

However, to think that I have gone from owning a single 50mm lens for almost ayear till three months ago to now having four 50s, one 35, and five assorted zooms - 20-35 / 28-80 / 35-70 / 35-105 and a 80-200 (all except the 35 are with aperture rings) - does put a question mark in my own mind on my ability and capacity to prioritize spending - and I'm not even a professional fotographer !
But hey - all you guys with those mind numbing number of lenses have definitely given me a fresh lease of strength to go on splurging !! - You guys are my role models !! :)

Cheers !!!

(err... what does LBA stand for..??)

Pentax A 28-80mm 3.5-4.5

I just bought the above mentioned Pentax A 28-80mm - NON SMC version
Well actually I wrongly read the reviews of the Pentax A smc version while looking for reviews ( and there were quite many a good things said about the smc version) and only after ordering it realised my mistake. I needed a wider angled walk around alternative to my RMC Tokina 35-105mm. Moreover it was going really cheap as the photography shop were clearing out lots of stuff plus the zoom ring on this copy had lost its rubber grip. (which doesn't really matter for me actually)
It arived today and the first few test shots straight out of my study window were not bad, Still need to take to town though. I have a month to decide whether to keep it or send it back and that is why I need some help.
On my K5II however it only gives me the widest aperture reading of 4.0 (even at 28mm) although it's a 3.5..!! Any idea why that would be ??
Secondly there is no marking for the size for lens hood/filter on the lens, I am guessing its 58mm... anyone care to clarify this for me please ?.
Lastly I would like an opinion as to whether for modern DSLRs this lens is really a 'keeper' or just a dog (considering not many Pentax Lenses are dogs), and what are the things to keep in mind while using this lens ??- valuable tips, kind of lenshood etc.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks @ Adam, Na Horuk & SM Jim - valuable inputs all.. will try out the suggestions.
One more thing - even though I set the FL to a number, everytime when i switch on the camera it opens with the 'Input Focal Length' display screen and asks the FL to be entered.. is that normal or should the camera remember the previous entered FL value and go staight to the user mode dispaly ? (I'm shooting mostly on TAv).

When using/mounting a manual focus zoom lens on the new pentax DSLRs, what is the FL value to enter( for eg - for an 80-200mm lens ) ?

K5II - Strange behaviour ?!?!

Just got a brand new K5II yesterday and noticed this behaviour -

What's happening is this -
In factory/default settings everything works fine. But if i once disable the status screen (page 1) from the Tools menu, it stays disabled even after enabling it from the Tools menu again. The other functions of the rear screen works fine like Playback or menu navigation etc - only the status screen doesn't comeback although on changing the mode dial the screen would briefly show the change and go back to black.
However if I Reset the cam from the Tools menu (page 3), the status screen does comes back and works normaly again but all the setting changes and customisations in the Camera, Playback and Tools menus are gone (reset to default) with the exception of the settings done in the Custom Menu - those remain unchanged !! I tested this behaviour a couple of times to be sure about it and each time was the same result.

Is that normal ?? ..

Can someone else try in on their K5II and give a feedback please. ???

Well I seem to have located the problem - it has nothing to do with lenses or the mount - thankfully. What's happening is this - In factory/default settings everything works fine, however if i once disable the status screen it stays disabled even after enabling it from the Tools menu again - YET - however if i press Reset it in the tools menu, the status screen does comes back but all the setting changes in the Camera, Playback and Tools menu are gone (reset to default) with the exception of the settings done in the Custom Menu - those remain unchanged !! Is that normal ?? .. Can someone else try in on their K5II and give a feedback please. ???

I thought that too at first and checked - but its on 'Enable' (default) setting. I'm just wondering at the moment whether to take it to the authorised service and repair centre or simply send it back... considering the cam hasn't even been with me a day and just 30 odd test shutter releases !!

---------- Post added 26-07-14 at 15:25 ----------

:) ... true there are some differences in layout and controls in the K5 II but not a big radical difference in configuration or menu than the K30 I had previously ! :)
