I've been reading about this mirror flap issue and feeling smug and grateful that I've had no occurrence . . . until this week. I was shooting single shots (RAW) at the beach and all of a sudden my K3 cut loose with the mirror slapping! I shut the camera off and it continued to slap. I had to pull the battery to get it to stop.
I shoot nearly everyday and have had the camera since January and this is the first time this has occurred. This issue may be more widespread than we're hearing here. If it happens again I will contact Pentax.

Thank you for keeping us posted on this issue. I've not tried time lapse yet but I have had my k-3 lock up on me a time or two. I'll be more mindful of when it occurs. Thanks to everyone who is taking the time to post on these issues.

Thanks so much for this solution pentax user! I've reset to your suggestions so will see what I get.
I have a one hour session in two days at the camera store where I purchased the K3. It's a one-on-one session and I asked for someone that has experience with the Pentax. The salesperson I spoke to responded with a stifled laugh and said, "well no one here knows much about any of the Pentax . . .". Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy knowing I spent an additional $225 to purchase my camera at my local camera store . . .

I also couldn't use iPhoto (OSX Version 10.6.8) so used Lightroom version 3 and it works fine. I intend to update to the latest LIghtroom . . . I highly recommend Lightroom ~ it's well worth the investment.

I purchased replacement batteries for my Canon (not from Wasabi). The original battery is still going strong after 4 years, the replacements not so good. Two died and one is meh . . . BUT I paid .62 for one, $2.62 for another and $3.00+/- for the third AND they were great for 2 years. I would love to understand what has the performance of these batteries vary so greatly.

I'm looking at purchasing backup batteries from 'Wasabi' for my K-3. Wondering if anyone else has purchased these and your experience. I'm not interested in using a battery grip at this time so backups are what I want. Thanks!

I finally made my choice and bought the K-3 yesterday from my local camera shop! I'm beyond excited to take it to the beach today and shoot. It was a tough choice between the Olympus OM-D EM-1 and the K-3 but the K-3 won out. I live on the coast and shoot mostly at the beach. 92 weather seals and the toughest build around coupled with amazing image quality and how good the K-3 feels in my hands won out over the small size of the Oly.
Besides the Canon AE-1 I bought in 1980 (and still have!) I bought a Canon point and shoot and a Canon SX-30, basically a big point and shoot. I've used the later for 4 years while waiting for the right DSLR to come my way. I had a budget of over 3k so had some wiggle room in choice. I love the idea of the MC 4/3 cameras and their diminutive size and small lenses but don't want to sacrifice image quality. I'll continue to save and buy a small point and shoot for hikes and such when I don't want to pack the K-3.
Thanks so much to 'klkitchens' for the direction in finding the shutter actuation count. There is so much to learn and I SO appreciate this forum community to help out. I'm hoping to contribute at some point as well. :)
