The Nikon D610 weighs 50 grams more than the K3. (Yeah, I know...the D610 has a front polycarbonate panel - as opposed to a full magnesium alloy body). And you're right about the colours/sharpness...that's why the majority of pro's use Pentax. All of those other FF cameras are just crap.

Here's a link advertising the D610 (Body only) for $1679. Given that the K3 is generally about the $1200 mark, that's fairly close to a $500 gap. Prices are in AUD Nikon D610 Body Only Digital SLR Cameras Digital World International
Canon 6d's are selling on line for $1546 AUD (Body only)
A K3 for $1000...that's a good price too. Given that my figure of $500 is a little out, it still goes to show that FF is fast becoming within reach as prices have come down and the availability of used equipment is in abundance, which also makes it relatively inexpensive.

Yep...and you know the rest.
I went and tested the K3 and about 4 different FF cameras. Instead of being one of those people bagging out Pentax for not having a FF (instead..I bagged them about a lack of TC, which has now been addressed...at double the price of Canikon/Sigma TC's!!) - I decided to purchase a FF camera.
Even just looking through the viewfinder blew me away. Using a 50mm prime that is actually a 50mm prime is amazing in my opinion.
Here's the thing, Sure...a FF costs a little more, but for a $500 difference (or less) between a K3 or a canon 6d, or Nikon d610 - all of a sudden, you're in the system and the options are LIMITLESS. It's a no brainer if you're using your kit everyday like I do. It doesn't have to be expensive as there are a multitude of 2nd hand lenses available from either the primary manufacturer or 3rd party lenses. How many times I've seen lenses not available in the Pentax mount is depressing and not only that - trying to find a stockist is like pulling teeth.
I'll be keeping my K5-ii for my kids to learn with. But as I said, rather than whinge about it...I decided to make the move. I know that someone will pick apart my comments and good luck to you. But if someone is reading this thread for the first time and they are wondering about investing in Pentax, I'd say look at what's available...is their a multitude of options...which brand provides CHOICE? That's very important and dependant on your photographic needs, Pentax choices are very limited. I hope that Pentax under Ricoh move forward, because I don't know if any of you realise this...but the younger generation of photographers know only Canon and Nikon. They will continue to be strong.

No..he's a hobbyist and probably has no need for a FF. Bit like he no longer has the need for a DA*50-135 and is now looking for a 'Tammy 70-200'.

Dan, I think that you could make the same comments about lens limitations for all lenses. They all have a sweet spot.
These are lab results and not real world. If you look at the EXIF data of the above image that I posted, you'll see that it's a tiny file. The high resolution image is quite sharp at f6.3/500mm.
If you took the lab reviews of the DA 18-135mm and took it for gospel, then you would never buy it. But the truth is, that it is a nice lens that serves it's purpose. That's how I see the Sigma 150-500. Comparisons with the professional grade DA*300 as opposed to a "budget" telephoto is not comparing apples with apples. I would expect the DA*300 to easily outperform this Sigma lens on all levels - except for focal length.
It all comes down to the environment, the subject being photographed and ultimately the photographers skill, knowledge, creativeness and equipment familiarity. There's no doubt that there are issues with this lens. But what's it competing against in Pentax land? Nothing.
So, the options seem to be adapting a TC (with no autofocus - to me, that's like going from power steering to driving a car with a front flat tyre) or the DA 560mm at 7 times the cost. Or, just continue to crop....
I hope that RICOH do release the TC soon. If they do, the DA*300 is back on the radar (for me at least). That's the other thing that I notice...there seems to be lots of Pentaxians who would cherish a focal length beyond 300mm. So, hopefully I'm not the only voice who continues to rabble on about this.

Two images attached. 1st one is straight out of the camera (RAW conversion) with no post processing at all. The 2nd pic was post processed in Lightroom. Whilst not the sharpest images, for what you pay for a lense with a focal length in this range, It's cheap. You can't expect champagne results on a beer budget. LOL.
I've never had zoom creeping issues, but I probably wasn't using this lens in the same way as the post above mine^. I imagine that it could definitely happen if you were using this lens for celestial type photography, but a lock would be a good idea, but in the meantime, you'd have to improvise if creeping was an issue. It is a mammoth size. Many lenses in this focal length are quite cumbersome.
In terms of focusing, like my previous post, I learnt to overcome some of the issues with this lens, but I use it everyday. If I only had this lens for 2 weeks (was it used everyday in those 2 weeks?), then I'd probably be frustrated with it too.
What are the alternatives for PENTAX/RICOH at this price range and this focal length? Any suggestions?

Bob,
Here's the waterproof device that I use. This is 2k worth of housing that is custom made for my Pentax. Do you know how hard it is to come by this sort of stuff? Do you have any idea how hard it is to get that one shot using this bulky, heavy equipment and how hard it is to continue monitoring exposure levels? I only say this because nobody should ever question my commitment to Pentax or my over-all love for photography. I'm just like others on this forum (we all love photography) but hypocrisy seems to rein supreme and with the small minded attitudes that I have come across makes me want to puke.
The snaps of the housing I've posted were shot with the Pentax WG-II water proof camera...All the others were shot using the K5-ii with either the 10-17mm or 18-135mm (Lighthouse...45 second exposure, exactly 8 x revolutions of the lighthouse lamp).
Open your mind...
I'll no longer post on this forum. What's the point if when you ask a question, you receive a defensive response from Pentaxians who can't see past their nose. AND THIS ISN'T EVEN A FULL FRAME THREAD!!!!

"I want to do bird photography and I want to do this with the Pentax Kll and the Sigma 2.8 300mm lens and it will be necessary to have the Sigma 1.4 Teleconvertor to get the necessary reach while still having a lens that can be used without a tripod. Has the 1.4 teleconvertor been discontinued?? If so there is no other quality fast telephoto option for the Pentax in 300mm. Are Pentax owners being closed out of fast telephoto photography? Can I find the 1.4 somewhere? Is Sigma dumoing Pentax??

As for the post below yours...all that I can say is this. I am a Pentax user. I use a K5-ii with a Sigma 150-500mm for the extra focal length that I need for the type of photography I enjoy. I also use the DA 18-135mm as my walk-about lens. I also use a 10-17mm that I use in custom made water housing for my K5-ii.
I bought the K5-ii because I thought that it was a brilliant camera (and still do). I am not crapping on Pentax. Your comment is ridiculous.
Yep, I shoot sports...but I'm not a pro. Never said I was. What....Pentax users can't shoot sports...is that what you are implying (now YOU are crapping on Pentax)?
Just so you know...the colour rendition with Pentax cameras is awesome and that's why I purchased the K5-ii. I wanted a different look. The attached photo was shot on Jan 6, using a K5-ii with the said 10-17mm nestled in my housing. What, I can't come to a forum and ask questions about the roadmap or lenses?

Seriously? 50-135mm Too slow to track a waskily wabbit?? That sounds too hard to believe. Mind you, they're quite nimble.
Would love to hear from someone else who has used this lens for 'action' shots using a K5-II.

Hi Danko,
I would like to get my hands on the 50-135mm and your comment is inline with my thoughts (that is, also looking for a used 50-150). Main reason being is that I am a little concerned about focusing speed (to be used on a K5-ii with waterhousing...makes manual focusing cumbersome).
I see that the upgraded Sigma 50-150 (with OS) Is not available in a Pentax mount. Bummer...hence the reason why you're looking for an earlier version?
I would love to stand corrected on the speed of focusing of the DA* 50-135mm.

This lens is exceptional value. It's great to see that there are other Pentaxians who use focal lengths in this range. Because some Pentaxians feel that this is a "specialised" area and that it isn't viable for Pentax to invest in this focal range. Some believe that only "bird watchers" require a lens like this....
It sickens me that I have to go to a third party such as Sigma to complete my kit, because Pentax have a huge gap from 300mm - 560mm and a huge gap in price between these focal lengths. (please don't respond with "just crop"). Some people might think I'm bashing Pentax, but it is a compliment to Pentax that I would rather a focal length in this range in Pentax glass, that compliments my Pentax camera as opposed to spending money on a third party lens. I WOULD RATHER SUPPORT PENTAX/RICOH!
The only issues that I have with this lens is the hunting factor in AF. But I learnt quickly that one of the best ways to overcome this issue was to keep the lens constantly "busy" and minimise the focus distances. Having said that - exactly 11 months after purchase, it is now in the hands of Sigma, because the AF was failing completely (I use this lens nearly everyday, so it's had a good workout). Still a nice lens for the cost. I did a framed print (920mm x 620mm) of an action shot that I captured in low light and the print is sharp as a tack (K5-ii). Pentax used to make awesome telephoto/zoom lenses (still do in the DA* range) but I hope that they can fill the gap before my K5-ii becomes my backup, because there's other companies out there who provide range and choice - even if it does mean forking out more $$$'s.

Apologies...I understand what you meant now, as in Canon being the dominant manufacturer (as many would say).
I'm biased towards sports photography and there is not a camera that can touch the D4 (that's just my opinion).

Well you're right because adjustments can be made in post processing, so it isn't all that critical.
My photography is ocean based, so ocean horizons don't look too striking with a barrel distortion at 18mm or pin cushioning at the longer end of the focal length. But yep...just enable profile adjustments and you can turn any half decent performing lens into a really good one! I take reviews with a grain of salt - however, this review is spot on regarding this lens. Pentax SMC-DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] WR - Review / Lens Test
I'm not trying to play devils advocate. As I said before, the strength of this lens is that it is very versatile and the WR for many people would be worth its weight in gold. For many, this may be the only lens that they need. But can I point out that when this lens was first released, it actually cost more than a limited lens. It's massively reduced now (because it was massively overpriced), but ultimately, it is a kit lens, but it can be fun to use...

Totally agree....but just don't use the 8fps. Or get yourself a medium format so that you are forced to get it right the first time for your 1 x image every 1.1seconds.
I read this statement with interest on "Digital Photo School" (that's where I belong by the way..);
"If you have lots of glass from the film days, it might be worth looking into a full frame body. Modern Nikon bodies are compatible with nearly every lens Nikon ever made, and Canon bodies all work with EF glass."
If this is statement is true....Then I can't see Nikon changing its mounts. That would 'appear' to be corporate suicide!
FF will live. Acoustic drums and guitars were out the door in the 80's in favour of the synthesiser.
Both the D7100 and K3 are a gimmick. 24MP on a cropped sensor?? Look at what a 16mp full frame sensor on the D4 can produce. It's night and day. And yes..I also understand that the price is also night and day. The title of this post is "FF will die out, except....."
....Except in Pentax land where FF is already dead!

Once you work out how to control the vignetting when wide open, or control the heavy barrel distortion at 18mm and the pin cushioning from 100-135mm focal length, it's actually a nice versatile, fun lens to use and is nice for portraits. Seems to have a nice sweet spot in the 24-50mm range.
