I was certain there was no crack near the button, and nothing mechanical seemed to be malfunctioning. I was about to send the K20D in for service since the problem persisted and I could see no way to fix it - the menu button seemed to be permanantly depressed, so that "version 1.4" lit up on the monitor when I turned the camera on, and the menu screen simply would not appear when I pressed the menu button. Plus the exposure bracketing button seemed to be functioning as if it were permanently depressed - when I moved the front wheel, without depressing it, 3 or 5 exposure bracketing appeared.
I usually use M42 SMC takumars, with a pentax adapter, and remembered that shortly before these problem occurreds, I had removed the adapter, and used the kit lens so that I could activate the sensor dust mapping function. When done cleaining the sensor had then re-inserted the adaptor and when I used M42 lenses the camera started functioning as if the menu and exposure bracketing buttons were permanently depressed.
So, I removed the adapter, attached a K-mount lens (a K28 f3.5 to be exact) and voila, everything worked perfectly. And I then removed that lens, re-inserted the Pentax M42 adapter, and attached my SMC Takumar 55 f 1.8 and everything still worked perfectly, as it has continued to, using a variety of M42 lenses.
So, I assume that there had been an electrical problem of some sort, perhaps the adapter had not been on just right and some contact was shorted, which was corrected when I removed and then re-inserted the adapter.
I figure if anyone else has a similar problem with the menu and exposure bracketing buttons he or she should try removing and reattaching the M42 adapter, if it had been in use, or wiping off the electrical contacts.

The menu button simply does not work, in any mode.
When the K0D is turned on, "Version 1.4" appears in the monitor, as if the menu button was depressed. Yet the menu button is not actually depressed, and can be depressed, though depressing it does nothing.
The LCD display reads "Off", shows no bracketing, and the battery charge level - nothing else.
Shutter speed and remaining frames to be exposed momentarily appear when I go into preview or do other things.
taking the battery out over 24 hours did nothing either.
Thanks for the suggestions so far, any more?

My K20D is exhibiting exactly the same problem, functions as if menu and autobracketing buttons are permanently pressed, none of the menus display on the monitor, which otherwise functions perfectly. Anyone figure a way out of this?

Sunita - To answer your question, I would suggest Keh (www.keh.com); their "bargain" grade is always good, and they are reputable. You might find lenses somewhat cheaper in pawn shops etc. or on ebay, but you can rely on Keh's ratings and warranty. Unfortunately they seem to have fewer and fewer M42 lenses. Before buying M42s that are not Pentax-made be sure to check compatibility and whether you will be able with your camera to take pictures with the diaphragm stopped down.

I have the 85/1.8 screwmount and it is sharp, at least in the center, even wide open. However, the depth of field at 1.8 is very limited, and this may account for some reports of softness wide open in this and other lenses of comparable focal length and maximum aperture. Compare the sharpness of the dragon with that of the man in the attached image, ist DS, ISO 1600, 1/45th, 85/1.8 at 1.8. Street lights at night, RAW file, ACR defaults , no post-processing except minor adjustment of white balance.

Both B&H and Adorama sell adapters that allow infinity focus, for example, the Kalt adapter. The only downside to these adapters, in comparison to the Pentax-made adapter, is that they are sticky to remove from the camera.

If you were buying them as an investment to resell them you got a good deal.
But you were buying them to use, and for that, you would have gotten a good deal even if you paid more than what you did.
A dinner for four in a good restaurant is much more than what you paid, and once you leave the restaurant it is history. These lenses will give you pleasure and contribute to your photography for many years.
Your primes are long-end on a dslr. If you find you like working with them and with manual focus, try a 28 or 35 f3.5 SMC or super takumar for a different, and equally worthwhile inexpensive experience. Normant

I usually dislike harsh or discordant bokeh, but agree that sometimes it adds a desirable effect. This was taken with a 200 mm SMC Takumar f4; I find the "cubist" effect works here when the image is desaturated to black and white.

They are reputable and should rectify this. The SMC is not that much better than a Super, but you paid for the SMC, and they made a mistake which most likely was purely accidental. I've bought a bunch of M42s from them and they were always better than described except one which they fixed immediately.

Don't know about the K55/1.8 but - I have both the 50 f1.4 SMC m42 (later version) and the 55 f1.8 SMC m42. The bokeh on the 1.4 is definitely better, the difference being noticeable in the rendering of out of focus points of light. (the 1.8 sometimes has clashy disks or rings of light, the 1.4 less so). The 1.8 is not at all soft, even wide open (don't know about corners full-frame, since I use a DS) and may be a bit sharper at 1.8 that the the 1.4 is at f1.8. Also, I think that at infinity the f1.8 might generally be sharper than the 1.4, at least at the wider apertures (based on test photos I did of distant brick walls). They are both great lenses with the 1.8 having less "personality".

Keh grades conservatively. The lenses are typically better than the description that goes with their ratings. I have bought about a half dozen screwmount lenses with bargain ratings from them. The glass on all was flawless. On one, a 24mm f3.5, the aperture ring became loose shortly after I purchased it. I sent it in for repair on the 60-day warranty and the repair was excellent and I think they also readjusted the focus, even though I did not ask for it, as the lens seemed sharper afterwards. The other lenses had no problems at all. And only one of them looked slightly beat up (a 200mm SMC f4 for 49$ US). There is a 14-day return privilege so long as you pay the return shipping.
