Does anyone LIKE noisy pictures?

Perhaps I'm the only one, but I actually enjoy the graininess at higher ISOs from the K-3. I mean, I understand most "customers" prefer noiseless photos, so I tend to acquiesce to their demands when shooting for a purpose. And yes I do understand that portrait shots probably shouldn't be noisy at all. But for stuff that I do for myself, I actually really like grainy pictures. It feels very ethereal to me. I really like the grain at 3200/6400 in the K-3.

I tried searching for a related thread, but I don't think my keywords helped me one iota -- my apologies if this has been discussed recently.

DA35mm Macro vs. FA100 Macro

If you can find a used one, give the FA 50mm macro f2.8 a try too. It is easily the sharpest lens I've ever used. I bought it from some shady guy on CL who inherited it from his aunt. It's amazing.

K# Review - CA Issue? I have not noticed this

I was disheartened with the review he gave it. Considering the Fuji X-T1 got a review a few weeks after release, is ~20 pages, AND it got the positive review it did, it's clear he has his priorities (misleading and incomplete CA data aside).

I feel like this photo might be better suited in black and white. The colors are muted and sort of distract from the photo overall.

Up the saturation in general, up the contrast, and increase the brightness/exposure a bit. Perhaps add some sharpening - as it is, the eye that's more in focus is slightly blurred.

I attached a 3-min version below with some straightening in it too.

Skin Tone White Balance

My boyfriend's family is Mexican and the baby has a darker complexion, at least in comparison to my casper-like skin. It matched him very well. When I get home, I'll post a picture.

To be honest, I haven't even tried it on pinkish skin. I'll try that in the next few days also.

Skin Tone White Balance

In Aperture, there's an ability to choose a "skin tone" white balance and then use a dropper to select some skin in the photo. Does LR5 have a similar option? I can't find one specifically like that in the WB menu, at least that I can tell from the titling.

I was messing with some photos I took, yesterday, of a baby and that skin tone WB dropper in Aperture is AMAZING. But, with K-3 PEFs, Aperture is so slow.

If I find something similar, I'll post it. Otherwise, thanks, y'all. :-)

It's amazing that SoCal doesn't have more considering the vast array of people that live in this sweatbox. Though, I also haven't seen another Pentax user in ages.

I haven't been to the LA Samy's in a while - do they also carry nothing? The OC one is pretty much just a Canikon store (with a slight seasoning of Fuji + Olympus MCs).

Another member a few pages back said that he loves Adorama, but it takes too damn long for their shipping. I feel the same about both Adorama and B&H. I love the companies, but Amazon's shipping (because they have a distribution center instate) just beats 'em to a pulp. I feel guilty buying from Amazon, but... I want it now!

Abstract In The Shadows

True, the second does "isolate" the tree, but like DeepThrob I'm going to have to say that picture 1 is more interesting. I'm just gonna snowball here...

I honestly don't think the trees on the right (or left for that matter) really distract much. The fact that you're on the shadowed side of the trees leaves two things that are apparent about this picture (to me) in relation to the center tree.

(A) Its mere presence in the picture as a whole:
The overall picture becomes the one and only subject if all we do is notice that the tree just exists. I think the entire picture, as a whole, is pretty good - especially in picture 1 where the darker blues are gorgeous (full disclosure: give me some contrasty, deep colors and I'll give it a thumbs up). A lot of people look for pictures with trees like this to represent solemnness or loneliness - these trees don't convey that (not to me anyway). Because of this, then it doesn't really even matter that there are other trees cavorting around.

(B) The backlit fractal effect of the branches AND the picture as a whole:
I suppose the trees on the sides (esp. on the right) take away from someone spending time reflecting on the branches. But then again, this is now another part of a multi-facted photo; one with these pretty branches AND THEN the overall picture with the pretty colors.

x2

Sometimes I LIKE the perspective shift w/ stuff wider than 50, not often. Which is why I stuck with 50. I didn't have much of a choice, though, as the only other lens I had for my Nikon at the time was the DX 18-70, which was a pile of sh*t for a lens. How Nikon got away with that lens I'll never know. I was like 19 when I bought it, though, so it was a cheap NEW lens I could hopefully PS the hell out of to make look good. I was only semi-successful. But I digress...

I'm with you. I picked up an FA50/1.4 on eBay a few months ago, added one of those collapsible Pentax hoods, and it's doing a fantastic job. I didn't even bother calibrating it.

Edit: (Oh jeez, forgot to throw in my two cents.) That being said, when I used to do headshots and portraiture with my old Nikon D50 and the AF-D 50/1.4, it was the perfect focal length for me. I got many fabulous shots from it. I've tried doing a little wider and, really, the only thing that perturbed me was my usual involvement of shadows from being so close.

Streets Colour or B&W

For the first set, I'd say leave all of them in color. None of them to me has a clear "subject" specifically pointed at in the photo, which imho, means that the photo itself is then the subject. If that's the case, I feel like the color is a huge aspect of it (especially within #1 and 5 where the color only made me notice details I wouldn't have even picked out in the b&w). Number 8 looks good either way, tbh, but I again feel like the lack of colors is drowning out the possibility of the band being the focal point - perhaps a shallower DOF would have made b&w even better? That's assuming the band was your focal point, anyway.

In the second set, #13 looks great in b&w. I feel like 9, 11, 12, 14 would be better off in color. The pictures have a lot filling the frame and I had a hard time noticing what, exactly, was in the picture. Between 13 and 15, and I doubt it's a competition, but I like 15 the best. I feel like 13 had its contrast lessened - it almost looks real estate HDR-ish. I think they're saturated fine, but... I can't put my finger on it.

Once it stops raining here in SoCal, I'll get out there and take some. Rain in SoCal is boring, at least in the OC.

I have to take care one of my other hobbies today - my bird. I have to get her groomed. She's gonna hate it!

So, I got the 35/2.4 today. My initial impression with it is also a big "Wow!" For $170, this lens is fantastic! Hell, for a few more hundreds it's still pretty damn good. Maybe I won't do the 31 after all. DSims, you were right!

Thank you all again!

I ended up purchasing the 35/2.4. I'll see how I like it first - then maybe down the road the 31 might make its way into my hands.

Thanks for the advice, good sirs (and madams)!

Ah! I see what you're saying, and I see the concern. Generally, I do like to shoot at wide open - the fuzziness seems to always be one of my allies. Regardless, I understand the concern. I hadn't thought of it that way. Thanks for the in-depth reply! Haha.

Considering that the lens is pretty cheap, even at retail, I might buy the 35/2.4 and the 31/1.8 and keep them both.

On a side note, I just got (secondhand) the FA 50mm 2.8 macro yesterday and I've been putzing around at home, taking shots of my animals. All I can say is: What a sharp mofo of a lens!
