New DFA* 50mm f/1.4 (kinda, mostly...yeah, it is!)

I really don't know how the Sigma Art gets such rave reviews. I don't see how spending $1000 on a lens that works when it feels like it is remotely acceptable to the same people who routinely write about Pentax's lacking autofocus--it is a true weakness, but like...Sigma totally seems to get a pass on the highly questionable autofocus on their Art lenses.

I recall the line at the end of Mystic River, when Jimmy says to...whatever Kevin Bacon's character's name was: "Thanks for finding my daughter's killer. If only you'd been a little faster...." It makes me wonder what the K-1 would be able to do if it had that modern 85!

I plan to!! I will dazzle them with my photos and then tell them the story. :)

I'll be taking it out for a rigorous test next weekend most likely, so I will let you know how that goes!

In a complaint that I'm sure will surprise no one who is familiar with me, I found the Nikon offerings in the 50mm focal length both severely lacking for my newly acquired D850 after just one weekend of shooting both and decided to look at 3rd party options. While I've had a very troubled history with Sigma, I decided to give their Art 50 a whirl because it's reviews are just beyond rave.

I guess all those reviewers were paid off handsomely or something. Or given a functioning unit. Hands down, the copy I got has the most abysmal autofocus of any lens I've ever tested. It misses BADLY on a human subject from 4-5' away. Calibration might help but a $950 lens needing this much work out of the box means Sigma has absolutely no quality control at all. Or heck, maybe this is just how it works. Someone once described Sigma lenses as lens Russian Roulette: "You pull the trigger and hope to get lucky." WOW. Someone else, who has the 50 Art and loves it, told me if I was looking for a reliable lens, this probably wasn't going to be it. WOW. That's one heck of a slam.

So I decided to try out the Tokina Opera 50mm. As you surely know, it's a rebadge of the new Pentax DFA* 50mm f/1.4. It arrived yesterday and I immediately stuck it on my camera to give it a try.

HOLY SMOKES. This lens is great. Just plain great. It rivals the Tamron 85mm I've been using and that one is really close to the Sigma 50 and 85 Arts that are rated by DxO as the "sharpest lenses on the planet." The autofocus is dead on from the box, nailing precisely where I want without hesitation, even at wide apertures. The bokeh is lovely and sublime.

If you have a K-1, this is the lens you've been waiting for. I can't test it on the K mount, obviously, but this lens just makes the D850 sing. On the other hand, it kinda makes me sad because if Pentax could have just put out a few more lenses like this, it would have been enough to stay with the brand. I do hope that they can continue to make products like this.

Sigma 150-500mm F/5-6.3 APO DG OS HSM

Asking Price
500.00 USD

Item Location
Houston, TX (United States)

Item Description
I am switching systems and will be listing all of my Pentax equipment over the next few weeks. This item is part of round 2 of my sell-off.

This is a gently used Sigma 150-500, a true beast of a lens. I purchased it from another forum member in person a little over 2 years ago now and have used it only occasionally in the time I've owned it. It's been mounted on my K-1 but has not been mount converted so it will put a small scratch on your K-1--BUT NONE OF YOUR CROP CAMERAS--if you mount it. Truthfully, I'm not even sure where the scratch it makes is, it's so small. No issues with focus. Never been dropped.

I'm including both the original case and a small Pelican-like (Sam's Club knock-off) case for the lens, unless you don't want the case to save shipping cost.

Original case:

Pelican case:

ncluded Accessories:
Lens
Original hood
Original front and back caps
Original Strap, case
Original tripod mount
Pelican case fitted for lens

Actual cost of shipping will be tabulated based on your location. Due to a number of recent troubles with the post office here in Houston (and the recent price hikes) , I think it's much safer to use UPS or FedEx. I'm flexible on all this, though.

Leaving Pentax

First of all, thanks to everyone for the nice replies here! I kinda expected a lot of denials, but man, there's a lot of agreement with what I've found as the limits of Pentax. It doesn't make the whole system bad because nothing is perfect, but as my capabilities have evolved, so have my expectations and needs.

One last tick on AF: one thing that's also brought me to this point is I do a ton of big groups. My models are pretty patient (and no one has ever left me because of it), but it's a bit disheartening to hear a few sighs when we line up 10-14 girls in pose for a big group shot, take a few clicks, and then I review and.... "Ok, we need to get everyone in pose again! Focus isn't good enough...." It just takes so much time away to have to redo stuff.

But to offset some of my negativity, let me highlight a few things Pentax does really well. Or rather, features I'm going to miss:
1) The K-1 is the best feeling camera I've ever held. It is solid and simply a wonder to hold. Canon's stuff feel like toys and even this Nikon D850 has a plasticy feel to it in various places.
2) IBIS. I'm going to miss this a lot. It has let me do things others cannot, like shooting at low ISO for super clean images while others have had to use higher ones.
3) Backward compatibility. Pentax is nice about using SD cards and batteries over. I wasn't pleased to drop over $200 for a pair of QXD cards for the 850 just so I can use dual cards. And I still need one or two more so I don't run out of space on long shoots/trips. :/

I have a Nikon D850 for the body and the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/1.8 and the Nikon 50mm f/1.4 for my lenses. We will find out how they do this weekend!

It does! I try stuff out and see how it does for me. If I'm liking it and it's doing what I need it to do, I keep it. I only look to replace stuff when there's something it's not doing for me I want it to do.

Yeah, it's not the best selling point, to say the least.

But he also wasn't viewing his images on 4K monitors with tons of resolution. We just have higher expectations these days because we can.

Well, I can name a few names on the forum who might deny your initial point :p

Yeah, it's just like "How is this not fixed yet?" And skill and technique help no matter what, but the point is that sometimes, easier is better. I'm not great with motion focusing because I don't do it often. Sure, if I practice a ton I could master it, but I don't and instead, the one or two times per year I use that, I just want to be able to get something good enough without jumping through hoops. It's sad to not be able to get something that the parents with their iPhones next to me can get!

I've owned four Sigma lenses: the 17-70 contemporary, the 18-35 Art, the 70-200 HSM II, and the 150-500. Every one of them has had something wrong or strange with them. The 17-70 had some strange focal length misreporting that made it not work right with shake reduction and led to blurred images (until this was fixed with firmware). The 18-35 focused like it was using a dartboard. The 70-200 was fine on my K-5 but wouldn't focus AT ALL on the K-1. And the 150-500....well, I'm not sure about it, but it seems miscalibrated or misfocusing at certain focal lengths but is completely fine at others. I'm just done with Sigma after all this. I don't trust their products anymore. I won't buy one for Nikon either.

And thanks for the well wishes.

That's a rather dire stance, to say the least, but yes, I agree that "eventually" stops being an answer people will accept after a while. If I were a camera article writer, it would be really hard for me to recommend Pentax because there's more promises than products.

Oh, it's quite a sharp lens! I think it's very good. But it's even outclassed, although slightly, in fine detail and resolution by the DA*55. When I was looking at some of my buddy's Fuji images at full res...wow, I couldn't believe how much detail they had. Just zoom to 100% and the finest details are stunning. The 77 is nice, but it can't quite match these modern computer-aided designs and high precision optics. It's utterly amazing what new stuff can do.

I'm usually at f/2.8. It's quite thin with a 77mm focal length. I define my own style but some potential models actually pass on me because I don't have enough "super bokeh" in my work. I think it's overblown and a bit cliche (and people are obsessed with it rather sillily), but people do actually think I don't know how to do those kinds of shots because I don't do them. I'd actually like to try f/2.2 or f/2.5 even from time to time. The biggest reason I don't? I don't trust the AF system to nail the focus below f/2.8.

Many thanks! <3

One factor in helping me switch is I have so many Pentax lenses I just don't use enough because I don't shoot the kinds of photos where they are needed very often. At this point, I'm shooting all people with my kit. It's stuff like the UWA FA*24 (which I liked but only used a handful of times in the past two years), the 150-500, etc. Those generated a lot of extra dollars for the transition to make the initial out-of-pocket cost not as bad. I will have less capability at the onset in that regard but a 35/50/85 combo has covered me with Pentax for 98% of my shots of the past years, so I'm ok with that.

I thought heavily about those lenses but decided to try out the new Tamron's in those focal lengths. With VC and rave reviews, I'm excited about them!

I did very much consider the Mark II. I also was interested in the new 50mm. Two reasons why that ended up not being enough:

1) I go out to shoot every weekend or nearly so and the time lost to sending in the camera for the operation was too much a sacrifice. Heck, my mode dial has been stuck for months and the battery grip's shutter stopped working a year ago but I'm using the stuff so often that the minor inconveniences weren't worth the 3-5 weeks I might have to wait to have them repaired. The difficulty of repairs (i.e., one shop only) was another big factor in my decision, although I didn't mention it in the OP.

2) The cost of these upgrades was going to be about $1500 (selling my old DA*55 and replacing it with the new one to offset the cost) and this didn't solve my issues with the wide angle lenses. The net cost to switch systems is going to be about $2k or so (I did this estimate before as well) and I found that the slightly increased cost offered a much better chance I'd resolve my issues.

One thing I did pick up here and will stick with is a love for primes. This forum and Pentax did make me love the primes (to the point where people say I hate zooms-- I don't! I just don't think they are for me).

And thanks for the well wishes. :) She is working on her DAN, but I have some time to learn how to work this crazy 850.

Where I've found the FA35 lacking is its fantastic purple fringing (it does come out, for the most part, but oh boy does it go wild with the purples) and its contrast and color in some lighting can really fail. It was a beach shoot where what I got from it was just....middling. Really, it just comes down to that it's just "good." It's not great. I don't expect it to be given its modest price, but there's just no higher option at that focal length beyond it.

Really, the core of the issue breaks down to this: the 31 didn't suit my personal needs, whether that's inherent to the focal length or the lens itself, and the only other option is the FA35 (see above). Now I've got lots more choices I can reject.

I'm not really quite sure why I'm writing this thread. A good portion of the people who read it will rebut everything with slightly better worded retakes on "You suck" and/or excuses for how I'm expecting too much or otherwise chide me on not using the gear in the way it "should be used." Maybe I'm hoping that Pentax brand managers or something will read this and see where they need to make some improvements if they hope to retain their customers. I don't know.

After 5 years with the brand and over 75,000 shutter clicks between my K-5IIs and K-1, I am leaving the Pentax system behind and moving over to Nikon.

I don't think Pentax is bad. I think the K-1 is an excellent camera and I've used it to make some wonderful images (or so I think, with some validation from my community lol) that have made me a mainstay in several cosplay communities across the country. The high quality images and colors I've been able to extract from it have wowed my models and satisfied them far beyond their expectations.

So what's the issue?

For me, it's two things. The biggest is the lack of progression the brand has shown. The K-1 has been out for coming-on three years now and aside from the three lenses released near launch (before K-1's date, actually), we've gotten one new lens for the camera in all that time.

We don't have a modern 35mm or a modern 85mm still. The latter of these is coming but we've been told that for years. I don't feel I can wait much longer. I love my 77--it's my favorite lens--but it doesn't have the resolving power of the lenses my peers are using and in a semi-competitive environment, falling behind is not terribly fun. The lack of a modern mid-wide angle is more distressing because the options at that focal length are the FA31, about which's volume distortion on the outer thirds of the frame I have complained about before and found unacceptable for my usages, and the FA35, which is....very middling. The performance of the 35 at a recent shoot was so disappointing I had to apologize to my models for the poor technical quality of the images it produced.

Photography is not a race but my work is displayed next to and amidst a sea of many others'. My peers on other systems have many more options and continually receive new updated tools. It doesn't make for a "spirit of photography" but they don't have to work as hard to make their gear do what they want and can chose from a much wider variety of options that offer different technical and aesthetic capabilities. I want my gear to work for me, not I work for it. I've been though pretty much every autofocus prime Pentax has made and there's simply nothing else to try out.

The second is the technical performance isn't going to cut it for much longer. Specifically, the autofocus is a big concern and I no longer feel I can rely on it as I need to. I've had a few notable failures that have been very disappointing and infuriating:

1) At my girlfriend's black belt test, the K-1 was unable to keep up with the motion and I got just a few usable images from this once-in-a-lifetime event.
2) We went to Disneyland and I just wanted to take a few snapshots of her in her costume. I had to take over 15 clicks before I got one in acceptable focus.
3) At f/3.5 from a few feet away, one of the best poses from a photoshoot turned out to be slightly out of focus, all copies of them. I do review as I shoot and the screen wasn't quite good enough to show this. I kept the shot as it was 85% ok, but it's going to show when the image is printed.

I've had issues before this, always shooting 8-10 of every pose I take to make sure one is good, but these kinda broke what remained of my confidence because I'm missing good moments.

It's been a good run with the brand but in the time I've owned it, I've been able to grow so much but the brand has remained stagnant. When everyone else can push forward with new technologies that enable them to do things easier and faster, Pentax is holding me to 2016's (and often before that) technical capabilities. I'm not the perfect photographer and there's much I can learn and do differently, but I've hit technical walls more than once and find myself limiting what I do based on what I can do versus what I want to do. And for that reason, it's time to move on to another system that offers far more than I can hope to do and try to grow with it instead of just past it.

I am switching systems and will be listing all of my Pentax equipment over the next few weeks. This item is part of round 1 of my sell-off.

This lens is well-traveled but optically good. I've owned it since early 2014, I believe. There is a number of cosmetic flaws on the lens, the most obvious of which is a missing piece of plastic on the ring around the back of the lens. However, none of these battle scars affect the optical performance of the lens and it's been a great performer for me while I've owned it.

I purchased this lens from KEH about 2.5 years ago, just around the time the K-1 was released. I've not used it much in the past 1.5 years because I've largely been shooting models instead of landscape. The lens has always performed well for me and I have no complaints about it. It's in good condition, with a few scuffs here and there, common to the fragile silver paint of the FA* series. Autofocus works well. Lens has never been dropped while it has been in my possession.

It's gotten _REALLY_ expensive now. UPS and FedEx aren't better. Friend of mine found all carriers to be about $70 for an 8lb box....I've shipped stuff at that weight in the past and don't remember paying nearly that much! She got hit with a volume charge (charged for 24lbs.......) because it was 18x18x18, but that doesn't strike me as too big. :/

Flat rate boxes are about the only thing that's reasonably priced.

Item for Sale
Pentax MZ-S film camera in excellent condition

Asking Price
200.00 USD

Item Location
Houston, TX (United States)

Item Description
My foray into film photography was short lived and I have decided to sell my Pentax MZ-S film camera. I acquired it from a man in Japan a couple years ago. It seems whoever owned it before kept it quite well, as have I.

The few times I used it, it was a stellar performer for me. The autofocus works great and there's no issues with any screw-drive AF lens I attached; it worked nicely with the FA31, FA50, and FA77, as well as the DA*300. No problems with the exposure meter or anything with it. It really reminds me of using a DSLR, as far as a film camera can do.

I do have the manual but forgot to put it in the photos, so you will get that as well. I am including the rolls of film shown; these expired a little while ago and may not be good. I include them for your trial if you wish to experiment with the camera before taking it out into critical situations. I can also toss them and not send them if desired.

Camera and film:

Camera front:

Camera back:

Film will be removed before the camera is sent to you

Included Accessories:
Body cap (bayonet mount)
Four rolls of film (may not be good)
Two extra batteries (not depicted)
Manual (not depicted)

Shipping Policy:
Actual cost of shipping will be tabulated based on your location. Due to a number of recent troubles with the post office here in Houston (and the recent price hikes) , I think it's much safer to use UPS or FedEx. I'm flexible on all this, though.

International buyers: I will only ship to a Paypal confirmed address. I will not accept payment from you and then ship to a friend of yours in the USA for him to forward on. You are welcome to have a friend pay me with his account and verified Paypal address and then I will ship to him. What he does with it after that is between you and him--the transaction will be between him and me, then--and all risk is assumed to be yours once domestic delivery is received. I am, however, happy to ship it to your non-USA address on your Paypal account. Please check about customs fees and duties beforehand.

For those in the Houston area, local pickup can be arranged. I also travel frequently and may be visiting Los Angeles, San Diego, and Austin in the coming months.

Asking Price
675.00 USD

Item Location
Houston, TX (United States)

Item Description
I am parting with my like-new Pentax FA31 Limited lens. It just doesn't fit my needs as a photographer and the high value of the lens is not something I can justify keeping for something I can use so little. I've used it sparingly since acquiring this copy a year ago and it's in immaculate condition, as you see in the photos. No drops or optical issues with the lens ever.

All included items:

Just the lens:

Front element:

Lens mount and rear elements:

Included Accessories:
Original box with papers
Original pouch (never used)
Original back cap
Original lens cap (metal)
Generic 58mm plastic lens cap

Many take it as a point of pride. "I shoot in natural light only!"

But I just hear "I don't want to learn to work flash."

Well, I'm not going to go that far because I know many who don't use lights and they do some nice work. But they are much more limited in what they can do. Highly stylized (filtered) and tons of editing also tend to be hallmarks of their style, although this is not true of everyone who shoots natural light only.

And the "an ultra wide is anything shorter than the short edge of the sensor" still works too! Makes UWA 24mm or below of FF and 15mm or below UWA for APS-C.

A 35 isn't a wide-angle on a crop camera. It's a normal FoV lens. You need something like the DA21 for wide-angle.
