K-1 Video

I didn't buy the K-1 to shoot video, but, during a recent thunderstorm I thought I would give it a try. The video is short, only 2 minutes, 10 seconds, and there are (long) periods of darkness between the lightning flashes. Still I found it interesting, and the sound quality is quite good considering I only used the built in mic.

Has anyone else shot any video with the K-1 they would like to share?

Cactus announces RQ250 bare-bulb monolight

Just saw this on the Cactus facebook page:

Cactus announced the RQ250, a 250Ws bare-bulb monolight with an integrated radio receiver that supports TTL/HSS.
It will work with Canon, Nikon, Sony, Pentax, Fujifilm, Olympus, Panasonic, and Sigma.

Availability is announced for Summer 2018 and no pricing information has been released yet.
The RQ250 will be shown at CP+ in Japan (1-4 March).

There is a press release PDF with further information.

Exciting news, AFAIC!

With 250Ws, the flash/strobe is a bit more powerful than the Godox AD200. It should be a bit more powerful as three RF60X combined, but not as powerful as four RF60X.

It has a built-in fan to support extended shooting at maximum power.

A single (Lithium Ion) battery charge delivers 400 full-power flashes.

There is a modelling light but I'm not getting my hopes up that it will be very powerful, as no Watt figure is provided. Most battery-powered strobes do not feature very powerful modelling lights, so I'm not expecting wonders. Let's see.

I like the bare-bulb design which is ideal for use in modifiers, including strip boxes which are notoriously difficult to use with speedlights or directional/reflector-disc designs like the Profoto strobes. The protective cap should make it easy to handle the flash/strobe, despite the bare-bulb design. Even better, the protective cap doubles as a reflector with a frosted disc at the front. So one can use the RQ250 either Profoto-style (with the cap on) or as a bare-bulb strobe. Nice!

Obviously both V6II and V6IIs (the Sony version) will be able to trigger and control the RQ250.

I haven't spotted any information regarding the modifier mount. I hope it will be Bowens compatible.

Can't wait to learn more about this!

Recently I discovered that K-1 records a 4k video of star trails internally. I thought I knew my camera, but it's been continuously amazing me for 2 years now !
I just want to say thank you to whomever decided to put the code in K-1 for shooting star trails!!
here is the video:

Selected as the 'worst place to view the eclipse' because it was the easiest drive for 74 Million people, it nevertheless had clear-ish skies.

These were, I think done with the K1, SMC-K 300 f4 at around f11

The one cloud...

And totality...

I have some other good stuff I did with the K-01 and its smaller sensor, but coming home took 6 hours for about 130 miles... I'm done... :asleep:

Large Photo Murals by Pentax

Recently I produced some large mural prints for a local major tourist and service centre, all taken with Pentax K3 and Pentax K5 and mix of lenses, there was lots of work to edit the right images to suit big format sizes, with murals 7.5m x 3m (Collage), 3.6m x 2.6m (Beach) and 2.8m x 2.1m (Pandanus). I've done similar images for local cafes in perplex glass, canvass and frames, but these were done on wallpaper material and have come out pretty good on colour and image quality, considering the size. It was pretty competitive to get my images in the mix, but I'm stoked I had the right coastal photos needed for the coastal tourism focussed centre.

Shoot with 1 Pentax camera and you are a Jedi
Shoot with 2 Pentax cameras and you are a Master Jedi
Shoot with 3 Pentax cameras and you are a Great Master Jedi.

Enjoy your weapons. You are new to the Pentax clan and yet, you are now a Great Master Jedi. You should stop at 3 pauare67. If you shoot with 4 you will turn to the dark side.

I decided to add the Pentax KS2 to my Pentax DSLR family. I am loving the KS2. I wonder how the KS2 will perform with a 150-450mm DFA lens? Hmm...

Pentax K-1 Auto Focus Performance

The very first Menu Option: Phase Detection AF
Set AF Mode: AF-C - I use back button AF
AF Active Area: to Single point or 9 point - It seem like the full 33 point mode slows down the more points it has to process. That is just a feeling I get after testing.
AF1st Frame Action in AF-C: FOCUS PRIORITY (The default Auto mode is awful)
Action in AF-C: FOCUS PRIORITY (Again the default Auto mode is awful)
Hold AF Status: OFF - This mode slows the AF system down so it doesn't check focus constantly. Turning this mode on basically slows down the AF system. I think this is off from the factory.

The factory default is for all 33 points (AUTO) and the AF-C modes are set to AUTO. All of these modes seem to slow the AF system down. If you start with the first frame in focus (focus priority) then the K-1 seems to do a much better job keeping up in the next few frames. If the first frame is out of focus it seem like the camera never catches up.

A lot of people are turning AF Hold mode on and that simply slows down the AF. The PDAF system is checking focus a set number of times every second. Lets say it reads the PDAF sensor 60 times per second (example). If you were following a deer (panning) and a tree came between you and the deer, the AF would try to focus on the tree. Focus is going to lock the closest subject. If the AF HOLD is set to HIGH then the AF slows down and only reads the sensor 10 times per second (example), and now the tree moves across the AF point and doesn't try to lock. The tree has moved off the AF point before the next cycle and you don't lose focus on the deer. AF HOLD seems to simply reduce the number of cycles per second that the AF system reads the sensor.

A lot of the people complaining about AF-C don't have the camera set up correctly. I was one of them. It's still not as fast as the current AF systems from Canon, Nikon, & Sony, but its not nearly as bad as some people make it out to be. Its not a sports camera. It doesn't have the buffer, frame rate, or AF to excel in that role. It is however an excellent wedding, landscape, architecture, wildlife, & portrait camera.
