Not sure I would consider the 70-200 f4 a portrait lens, I actually think the 70-200 f4 could be quite useful in a lot of landscape type photography, not every landscape shot is a wide angle one ...

But that said, your overall point is an interesting one.

And now I’m thinking maybe you ment 2.8, that is good for portraits - Does Pentax have a 70-200 f4?

When I quit smoking years ago I actually used an app that tracked how much I was not spending. The app had the ability to add items to your wish list and as you saved money by not smoking the app told you to go and buy things off of that list as your reward. For me it was really very effective.

Now they can just start counting up with even numbers, K-2, K-4, K-6 ... Gives them a few models to run with ... Confusing, but what’s new :)

Who’s throwing out good light resolution? Most pictures I take I keep pretty much all of the frame, I’m not generally shooting tiny birds and cropping out the whole sensor. That may be your use case but you seem to think that because I can’t get the same reach on a FF sensor that I for some reason have to crop out most of my pictures? I don’t get it. Do you think that most people with a K-1 crop out 70% of their frame on a regular basis too?

Yeah the K-1 does pretty dang well in low light, it’s an impressive camera. No denying that at all. Pentax did a great job on that body with the sensor.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding you...

Just throwing it out there that the 24MP FF sensor is WHY the D750 kicks butt so well with low noise and poor lighting conditions. Stuffing more MPs onto a sensor has some disadvantages, spreading them out over a larger area has some advantages. There is no arguement that the crop sensor has some great advantages for some types of photography, such as the beautiful pictures you just posted. There are plenty of good reasons why one might want a 24MP FF sensor though, lots of types of photography that don’t rely on cropping images. In these types of photography the 24MP FF sensor is an amazing product.

Norm, you seem to have a big beef with the D750 specifically and I cant figure out why ... I’m not sure where you get this idea that it tries to be something in between a APSC and FF camera, it is not a “FF Type camera”... It is a full frame camera, period, and it does full frame camera stuff very well.

There are reasons to go full frame (whether Pentax or other system), there are reasons to go crop, many people have both because they both excel at different areas since crop gives you more reach on your lenses (which is super helpful) and full frame does better at low light, wide angles, and low depth of field shots. I don’t know what gives you the idea that any FF camera is a compromise between other FF and Crop cameras? They are just different tools that work best at different things. Only cameras that I see people say are a compromise or dual duty are those FF cameras with very high MP counts that can still get a decent MP count when runnning in crop mode.

As for the new K-3iii I agree with you and think there are a lot of people here who, like you, would pay a premium for a crop camera replacement that incorporates more action features. I agree that properly spec’d and marketed it could do as well as K-1... I was hoping one would come along, I’d actually still like to see it.

Thinking of Making a switch away from Pentax. is it right or just gear envy?

Wow, comparing the D750 to an underperforming crop camera is a bit extreme. I am currently switching to Nikon myself, inhad been considering the K-1 but have held off on both that and expanding my lens collection for quite some time. I finally made my decison in December for the following reasons:

- Better AF. I like shooting action, things like soccer and the motorcycle ice racing I will be shooting tomorrow.
- Low noise: The D750 is excellent with high ISOs which is awesome for low light shooting. No crop camera will touch it.
- Lenses: This has been my biggest hangup, there are lenses and upgrades i wanted but i got cold feet on the whole system when 3rd parties stopped supporting. I like the 1.8 primes I have now, I really like shooting wide open, I am super impressed by the new Tamron G2 lenses not being made for Pentax, i just did some hand held testing of the Tamron 70-200 G2 that came in the mail yesterday and it had no issuse at all shooting 200mm and 1/25 shutter hand held, its an amazing lens and the VR is mindblowing. I also like my excellent wide angle Tokina which was quite the bargen in price.
- Tons of used market equipment available and not expensive.
- Flash Systems: I enjoy flash photography and now that I’m investing in the very reasonabily priced but fully equipt ecosystem from Godox I am just amazed at what it can do. I use a mix of speedlights and strobes. Godox has it all unless you shoot Pentax. I also have a SB600 I picked up for a steal at a pawn shop, have made use of the Nikon CLS with that for some off camera at night street photography and that was also amazing.
- I got my D750 with grip plus some other extras for $1500 from B&H - that is a bargen that has never been matched.

Pentax has some advantages, but ultimately i found that those advantages were no longer outweighing what i wanted to be able to do. I made the switch and have been very happy with it so far. Still have my K-5ii and I am still using it for some stuff, but less than my other camera. I do less landscapes than anything else it seems, the lenses I had and wanted on my wish list were allmost all not WR so WR isnt really key.

Comes down to what you want from a system, so far Nikon is showing me more of what I want for what I want to do so that is where I am going now... Took me a couple years to make the jump though, and there are some things I do miss (ergonomics on my K-5ii being one of them).

I've been tempted by a few of their offerings, but I have to say this one just does not appeal to me at all. Those images don't make this look like something I would want even a little bit.

Look at what you want to do with your camera, and consider what lenses you will need for those things.

If I was starting from scratch again at this point I would have to really take another serious look at the options. I love my camera, I really do, but the trends I see with 3rd parties starting to shy away from us makes me uneasy. Combine lowering 3rd party support with the fact that Pentax does have some holes in the lens lineup, especially when looking at a longer lens or fast AF. Don't count on someday picking up that Sigma lens that you might want, for example, I bought the LAST NEW Sigma 70-200 2.8 that I could find in the US after Sigma stated they were discontinuing it. It isnt even the latest version, but the only other new one I could find was on E-Bay and located in Hong Kong. This is a lens I knew I was going to want when I got my frist Pentax camera about a year ago to shoot some kids sports, the discontinuation forced me to move a little quicker than I had planned but I have not regretted getting that lens for one minute. There is currently no equivalent other than the Tamron version (which is slightly slower at AF according to reports) and finding one now is very difficult.

There are other areas that we suffer compared to the competition, flash systems would be another example. After sale support has also been pretty bad according to some threads here (months for repairs?)

I don't want to be all negative, There are many advantages to our system (in body SR, nice viewfinders, ergonomics of the bodies, dual control dials, legacy glass, etc.), but just make sure you know what you are buying into.

I for one can say that I own the most expensive lens I will ever purchase for this system - That is my Sigma 70-200 HSM II that cost about $950 new.

If I decided I was going to start spending more money than that for a lens, I would seriously consider making the jump to a system that might cost more, but also has:
A) *** BETTER AFTER-SALE SUPPORT
B) Better AF, our AF is seriously lacking.
C) More Options (i.e. Crop or FF)
D) Better flash support

I am a hobbyist, if I was a pro I frankly would not put much trust in what we have here at this time. Face it, we buy from a company that can't seem to get cameras fixed under warrantee within a couple month time frame lately. How much money should one put into such a system when alternatives are available?

If Pentax wants to play with Canikon and if we want to see the 3rd party support that they get, Pentax will need to up their game and show that this is a system worth spending big money on.

I like the extra tether that they have on the Joby - I am going to add something like that I think to my BR-Like strap.

I don't worry so much about the screw where the tripod mount is coming out (I also inspect that regularly), but I do worry about the attachment point similar to that shown a couple of posts up where the "hook" meets the rectangle piece. This attachment point is something that can't really be inspected, is made up of metal on metal that can spin and wear down, is not terribly thick, would result in a very rapid and undetectable failure if it were to fail, and really seems to me the weakest point in many of these systems... I just hate relying on one point like that without any backup to catch the camera.

I am thinking maybe one of those OP/TECH system connectors might do the trick along with a second clip...

Worth my time to get started with old lenses?

I'm going to go ahead and disagree somewhat with many in this thread, and not for lack of trying... I have some old manual glass, and I have gotten some good photos, but for me focusing has proven very difficult. These lenses were used when different viewfinder technology was common (split prism etc.) and modern DSLRs do not have the same technology for manually zooming. I can zoom this old glass on my old film cameras with no issue, on the DSLR I get a lot of out of focus images... Yes, you can replace your focus screen but that has other impacts on the camera from what I understand and I'm not willing to cripple my camera for newer glass to use the older glass...

Just my experience with it and 1 cent opinion...
