Signs of New Pentax Q Soon?

Let me clarify. I want to see a tilt-screen on the future Q. Not a fully articulated screen. Take a look at the Q-S1 and the Canon Powershot G7x on the Camera Size Comparison site. The body of the tilt-screen Canon without lens protrusion is actually thinner than the Q. A tilt screen doesn't have to add thickness. Also, the Canon has a full set of physical buttons and dials that allow the user to turn off the touch screen and still have full control of the camera. User choice.

Check out the tiny Manfrotto tripod I use. It's the MP1-BK and when folded adds a hair over 1/4 inch to the height of the Q and weighs 1 ounce. With it attached, my Q is still light and tiny. YMMV.

I get that there are people who really want an EVF on a future Q. I'm not one of them.

Signs of New Pentax Q Soon?

Here’s a differing opinion on EVF. YMMV. And obviously does for some other Q users.

In late 2014 I bought two Q-S1 bodies and the 01, 02, 06 and 08 lenses for my wife and I to travel with. I did this after years of taking Pentax DSLR bodies and lenses on many overseas trips. We got older and the cameras got heavier. A schlepp around Istanbul finally did it for us.

One year and several trips later, I’m very happy with the portability and image quality of the Q’s. My wife less so. A telephoto shooter, she uses the 06 exclusively and just isn’t comfortable with the body-lens-controls combination. For Christmas I got her a Canon SX50, and she loves the lightweight 50 x zoom. For myself, I got a Canon G7x as an always with me in a belt case camera.

For a future Q, I don’t want the body to get much bigger or heavier. Size is the critical value point for me. There are plenty of larger choices on the market that Ricoh cannot compete well with.

After using the touch enabled tilt-screen on the small Canon G7x, I would love to see the same added to the Q. It would facilitate taking the low angle shots I love to take with the Q-S1 sitting on the Manfrotto MP1-BK tripod I keep permanently attached to the Q. You can keep it permanently attached because, uniquely, the Q’s battery and card access is from the sides. HDR and multiple exposures are possible with the this tripod.

Having a touch screen is really great for quick menu changes and setting the focus point.

As a DSLR user, I know all about viewfinders. I don’t want one on my future Q.

If Ricoh tried to add an EVF to the Q, I believe the result would be either a much larger camera or a ridiculously small and unusable EVF. If Ricoh wanted to make a detachable EVF that you could add to the hotshot like Canon has for its G3x, that would be the way to go.

The Future Q -- what's your take?

For my wife and I, our overseas travel kit is two Q-S1 bodies with 01, 02, 06 and 08 lenses plus a Fujifilm XF1. The Fuji stays in a belt case, always with me. The Q's and lenses and extra batteries and a polarizer are in tiny bags whenever we go out on the street. The fact the they all take the same, limited capacity battery is what make it all work just fine.

Why do the Q?

My wife and I have been fortunate enough to do some serious traveling in the past few years. We carried a K-5 and K-3. Got to be a bit of agony when walking for hours through a foreign city.

So last fall I looked for something lighter. And ended up with the then new Q-S1. Then I bought more Q lenses. Then I found a Q-S1 body for $199 and bought it.

Our last trip to Netherlands and Belgium, we took two Q's and the 01, 02, 06 and 08 lenses. Quite happy with the results. Confession, also took the K-3 and the WP 18-55mm kit lens. I have many other K series lenses, but that's my only WP. I did use the K-3 the one day it rained. We used the Q's all 10 other days.

Yesterday, I was in Washington DC for the WWII Warbirds flyover. The Q's were useless for capturing the airplanes in flight, and the K-3 with 55-300 did the job. I learned something doing WBIF. Next time the photos should be a tad better. I tried to have a shutter speed low enough not to freeze the propellers. Turns out 1/500 mostly stops the propellers. Might as well have gone to a higher shutter speed and perhaps had steadier pictures.

Thanks for posting this, Denny. I just bought a Q-S1 and this information will be helpful to me as I adapt to using something much, much smaller than my K-3. I'm figuring on using the Q for foreign travel and general out and around.

Best Pentax KX & prime Europe travel kit?

Since we've progressed beyond the original poster's question, I'd like to say that my trip to Europe with 2 bodies and 4 lenses was enhanced by using a rear lens cap that joins two lenses together. Just google "OP/TECH USA Double Lens Mount Cap for Pentax Lenses". It makes a 4 piece kit into a 3 piece kit. With the 2 unmounted lenses joined together, they both fit easily into the same pouch. And the OP/TECH rear lens cap has a quality O-ring gasket.

Best Pentax KX & prime Europe travel kit?

In late November last year I spent 2 weeks traveling by river boat from Amsterdam to Budapest - with several days stay at either end. I took the 15mm ltd, the 21mm ltd and the 18-55mm WR as well as the 55-300 zoom. Turns out I used all four lenses and was very glad to have the 18-55 WR for the rainy days. For me, the most used lens was the 21mm as it is unobtrusive and perfect for street photography. It's also a good focal length for most of the interior and exterior architecture. I used the 15mm for scenic views from the ship and from hill tops and castle ramparts. I love my 15mm and would not have left it home, but the 21mm was more versatile for my European trip.

Pentax 12-24mm or DA 15mm Ltd. & DA 21mm Ltd.?

I have had the 21mm Ltd for quite a while and use it a lot -- especially when vacationing, it stays on the camera most of the time and is wonderful hiking and for landscapes.

I bought myself a new lens for Christmas, and had a hard time deciding between the DA 15mm prime and the DA 12-24. I looked at all the info available and finally decided on the 15 because of size, price, build quality and my preference for primes. It really is a nifty piece of work. I love the retractable hood.

If I ever decide I want to go wider the 15mm, I'll probably get the 10-17 fisheye zoom.

vertical grip for the K-7

Only you can decide. Sounds like your decision should be based on ergonomics.

As for me, I have had the vertical grip for my K10D for the past 2 years. I leave it on most of the time, and only take it off to reduce weight when carrying the camera on serious hikes. I bought the grip for my new K-7 and expect to do the same.

I also use the 21mm lens a lot when traveling.

Getting rid of the 16-50 to go to pancakes. Thoughts?

By the way, this little OP/Tech double lens mount makes it easy to carry two dismounted primes in the space of one zoom lens.

I have and use Pentax 15, 21, 43, and 77mm primes. I'm very happy with this kit. On the other hand, my wife uses only one lens, the DA 55-300mm. She does not like wide angle or primes. Different strokes for different folks. My advice to you would be to buy either the DA 21mm or the DA 40mm and use it exclusively for a period of time. I think this will show you the advantages and limitations of prime shooting. You can proceed from there in keeping the 16-50mm or selling it and acquiring more primes. If I had just one lens, it would be the 43mm ltd, but the 40 is nearly as good, I hear.

Thank you for that information. I've been using three different Pentax DSLRs for the past 5 years, and I never noticed the color coding. Duh!:p

Poll: If you had to pick today, would you get a K7, or a K-x?

I dithered between the two cameras and was leery of the K-7 price. But I got the K-7 two weeks ago after combining Bing cashback, Pentax rebate and a good B&H price on the K-7 kit with WR lens. I wanted my first WR lens, though the 18-55mm isn't necessarily the lens I really wanted.

Anyway, for about US$970, I'm very happy. I'd been shooting with the K10 for the last two years, and I know the K-X would have left me unsatisfied. Some people act like high ISO performance is the be-all & end-all for DSLRs. For me, it's just one feature on a list of desirable features, and the K-7 has more features I want. I would have liked it in red, though.

Actually, I'll still be shooting with the K10D whenever my wife is there shooting the K-7 with me. And my *istDS is there with a screw lens adapter installed to use my several 40 year old SMC Takumars.

Prime Recommendations Between 24 and 50 ?

I would tend to agree with the many people recommending the FA 35 for it's quality and price characteristics.

Myself, I started in 1972 with a Spotmatic and SMC Takumar 28, 35, 50 and 135mm lenses. The 35/2 was my favorite lens then. I got used to using primes and was never disappointed with the equipment. (My own abilities are another matter.)

Once I got into DSLR mode, I began to covet the FA 31. However, I bought the FA 43 and it has become my most used lens. It's a very useful focal length for zooming with my feet. And I feel the picture quality is superb. I don't believe I'll ever get the FA 31 now.

I currently feel auto-focus-prime-complete with my FA 43 plus the DA 21 and FA 77. And I still have the SMC Takumars in perfect condition and use them occasionally.

I keep the body grip on my K10, so it's not the camera I want to handhold for neighborhood walkaround. For that the DS with lithium AAs is perfection. When my wife and I are taking pictures together, she gets the DS and does not complain. Also, I have SMC Takumar 28, 35, 50 and 135mm lenses from 1972, and they are quite happy to be mounted on the DS.
