I just received an FA43 and had to take it out for a test drive. Peonies are blooming in the garden.

I love the DA*50-135 on my K-3.
The drawback is that I now want that image quality in all my lenses.

I bought my K-3 in 2014. I still use it every day and I'm 49 now.

The Pentax ME. Lots of folks dismiss it because it is aperture-priority auto-exposure which requires batteries to operate.

Consider DA35/2.8, DA21 Limited, or FA28/2.8. The DA40 Limited is inexpensive and can be added on to the order.

"Work for Hire" is a normal way of doing business. Most of the product photography I do is work for hire.
It is the nature of a contract to be negotiable. Tell them you would like to use the images in your portfolio. Maybe they say yes, maybe they say no.

The M35/2.8 is soft wide-open. The DA35/2.4 is a better lens in many regards. However, it depends on what look you're going for. The M35/2.8 is capable of some surrealistic, even psychedelic out-of-focus areas. Some folks call it "busy" or "distracting". I call it a feature.

From cameras I own? MZ-S with FA43/1.9
I'm also keeping my 645N with manual focus 75mm because its medium format and doesn't count.

Check the film rewind as well. The first two I looked at would not rewind film reliably.

My K-3 still works professionally 40 hours per week. I'm probably buying another this spring so I can hire a second person.
I spent 25+ years in the telecom industry. Electronics fail. You may never know why. A hand-full of reports (with no follow-up details to compare) does not equate to a trend, likelihood, or probability. How many K-3s didn't fail? Pretty much all of them. That's the trend, likelihood, and probability, even without people writing in to report that their K-3 didn't fail.

The K35/3.5 renders beautifully. If you want "a bit on the funky side", the M35/2.8 might be the one. It is more compact, less expensive, and still capable of sharp rendering. It also has some funky bokeh if you do it right.
Here is an example of the K35/3.5 wide-open in almost a macro capacity.
And here is an example of the M35/2.8 in a similar setting. |

The FA31 is an auto-focus film camera lens. There should be absolutely no issues using it on the K-1.

The coatings can make a difference. In bright sunlight, uncoated filters can contribute to contrast-reducing flare. One inexpensive resin filter from Newer actually contributed a milky appearance to photos when there was a light source in the scene.
I like Singh-Ray, Lee, Formatt Hitech, and Helios. In most cases, B+W works fine. In many cases, I can't tell Tiffen from B+W. I still have one variable ND filter from B+W that isn't bad at focal lengths longer than 28mm.

This should be renamed "Why I'm not going to buy a used K-3"
Though I have not dropped mine, it did give me a scare recently. I was training a new person in the photo department on using the studio strobes. After demonstrating that the slave strobes fire in sync with the camera flash, I handed her my K-3 and told her to shoot a few. Being the user of a small Canon DSLR, she was not expecting the heft of the K-3 and nearly fell over.

I have a dual 45 degree split image screen I purchased from Terence Camera on ebay. It cost about $20 and works great. I can't imagine using manual focus lenses on my K-50 without it. There were no fitment issues, no shims required, and focus is accurate. Because the split-prism and micro-prism rings distort light, metering can be off at times (all prism focus screens will do this). At most, I compensate -1.

I'm a fan of X-Rite and I have no experience with Datacolor. Monitor calibration is important for the first stage, but having a correctly-calibrated printer profile is equally important for the second stage.
