After some testing everything seems OK. Lens works and body works.....but not sure how to test image stabilization or if that works. On this body I think you only get about one stop increase with SR on so my guess would be to take a picture at w/50mm lens and shoot at about 1/30th of a second with the feature on and off and see if a difference.

OK....looks like I lucked out and both lens and body work great. Lens needed a cleaning and may have had a foreign substance on the rear mount - maybe gumming up the focus drive.....but basically I SCORED!!! Nice little camera that I absolutely did not need. I have to quit buying things just because they are cheap. I took an incredible risk and I happen to have made out fine. Maybe makes up for the last (3) lenses I got on EBAY that had fungus colonies growing in them.....or not.

Anybody know what the biggest memory card this camera can take?

no I have not gotten it yet...but it just sounded in the description like it could be remedied somehow. I worked in a camera store for 7 years and I had lots of people tell me the camera wouldn't focus and it was almost always user error....so I just have a feeling this is something like that.....but its just a gut feeling without the camera to test in my hands.... It like going to Vegas baby!

I kind of did the same logic but in reverse. If just the lens is OK, then I get over 1/2 my money back right away. but you think the odds are the lens is defective? Well if that's the case and the body is OK, then I do even better financially. Problem is - the payoff is not real great here and the risk is high. both items could be broke. I've never heard of a camera that functions fine but just takes out of focus pictures.....well actually, lots of my pictures are not perfectly focused/sharp, but this is due to shutter speed to slow or focusing on the wrong thing, etc....LOL.

Just did a dumb thing.....On E-bay bought a "broken" K100D with 18-55 w/hood, cap, strap.

Was only for sale about an hour and bought it now for $69 + $18. Camera fires up, menus work and takes PICS, but they are out of focus.

My first thought - turn autofocus on and get $150 camera for $20 (assuming lens & rest worth $50)....or maybe set autofocus point?

Everyone give me some odds on this happening?? I'll let you all know what happened when it comes in a week.

New K5ii and Manual Lens advice

I take a different strategy. I have a dedicted BODY for my screw mount lenses and its my K10. I leave the screw mount adapter in it all the time. The reasons are many, but to start with the K10 is not very good with ISO above 400 ISO in my opinion with too much noise, so using fast old primes (f2.0, 2.8 or f3.5) helps with keeping the ISO down. Autofocus also not real fast on K10, so manual focus lenses are an OK sacrifice here. Got the K10 used for only about $120.00 as my first Pentax DSLR, so not much point in selling it because its not worth too much. This is a great way to give it a purpose, namely, how good of an image can I get from a 10MP sensor? Or what kind odfa unique images can I get from quirky lenses like the JCPenny 200mm f3.3 or my Vivitar 50mm f1.7 VMC lens. but I also like KOZLOK's idea of the generic adapter on each screw mount - I considered doing that also and I may do that yet.

Online Photographer: FF will die out, except...

I also think that FF will diminish.....for a couple of reasons.. MP counts are TOO DAMN high already....at above 16MP, you have to cut you picture down to even print it or email it. My understanding is you only need 300ln/in to achieve best printing. With improvements in APS-c sensors - full frame isnt needed because more quality and resolution can be achieved than you could possible take advantage of. In other owrds the capacity of the camera far exceeeds that capacity of any photographer! The requirement for 35mm film (which was too damn small for large prints) doesnt have to be the requirement for new digital sensors. Are you saying that just because we have alot of old lenses and lens designs and an investment in engineeering - we need to make the sensor the same size it was in the 1930's through 1990's??? Really? What this is really about is sales and $$$ - photographers dont need FF, but rather manufacturers need it ot make more profits! Lets instead take advantage of the APS-c for smaller cameras (who WANTS to cary around a HUGE Nikon F-5 or EOS 1v??) with incredible capabilities like th K-5IIs or the K-3

I dont think Sigma can ignor Pentax much longer with the sales increases - plus they dont have to put IS in the Pentax lenses! FF lenses for Pentax may not make a whole lot of sense now - But I love putting FF lenses on APS-c to cherry pick the superior center of the image circle!

Well its hard to tell what's a ploy and what isn't, but people will definately say whatever to sell things! I didnt even want to get the K-5IIs, but at $500.00 for a used one in mint condition.....would you pass that up??? I took a risk as the pictures and description were not great - but one quick EMAIL to the seller and I was reasonably sure it was the real deal - so I pounced!

Remember folks - almost all defects in the image cast by a lens are at the edges .... so when we are using FF lenses on APS-c - these defects such as light fall off or edge softness aren't even captured by the sensor. This, by the way, is one of the COOLEST features of APS-c sensors!

look at pictures and descriptions of item carefully first. Test it out quickly (test everything!) & try for refund if unhappy. I just got a used and nearly mint K-5 & K-5 IIs recently and I bet you be thrilled with your cameras also.

Treading The FF Waters

I agree with MECROX - no FF needed for Pentax because the big boys are too entrenched. Instead, while Canikony shifts their resources to FF, Pentax moves in to capture the much larger APS-c market with advances in technology making the image quality almost equal in a smaller form. Lets face it - the pixel counts are just too damn high already! .... but what is truly amazing in terms of evolutionary changes is ISO sensitivity. If we can get to nearly noiseless ISO 6400 - f2.8 zooms and f1.4 primes become irrelevant! (almost) .....especially if all lenses get automatic IS

I've kind of ended up with a hodge podge of lenses - for instance - I really wanted the 55-300 WR.....instead I have (3) 70-300's (a Pentax FA, a Sigma DL and a Quantray LD) Until I get the real thing I will look at the Quantaray as water proof as in I don't really care if it gets wet! (well, maybe a little)

Most quality 50's are so damn sharp already - this seems overkill to me (except maybe for full frame, 20mp cameras). ....but as they say, if you build it - they will come (w/$$$)

So for maybe $700.00 you can go to 97% of an optically perfect lens up from the 95% perfect lens you could get for $500.00 previously from Pentax or Sigma versions. All for differences you can only see under a microscope???

Switching from Canon DSLR's and can't believe all the great deals I'm getting (EBAY & Goodwill) . Now I don't have to be afraid of using my equipment in the rain/now anymore!

Main reasons for switching 1) snow & rain resistance for cheap! 2) Image stabilization for every lens I own! 3) A chance to "experiment" with lots of OLD lenses and new lenses - just like the old days when I used to work in a camera store.

Pentax K10 for $130.00, Pentax K20 for $185.00, Pentax K-5 for $389.00 and a K-5 IIs for $500.00 (OK, so I ended up with to many bodies! ...but I just keep a M42 adapter in my K10 and stick to fast mostly prime lenses for that camera and use the K20 for work pictures)

And lenses too! 16-45mm for $220.00, 10-17mm for $385, 18-55mm WR for $100.00, 400mm f5.6 SMC-K for $225.00, 50-200mm ED $100.00, 80-320mm for $50.00, Sigma 70-300 for $30.00, Sigma 28-105mm III for $25.00, Sigma 28-70 f2.8-4 for $25.00, 50mm SMC-A f2.0 for $20, 50mm SMC-A f1.7 $25.00, Quantaray 70-300 LD for $20.00, Sears 135mm f2.8 w/macro for $15, 28mm Takumar f2.8 A for $60, 28-80 Takumar f3.5-4.5 for $15.00, PLUS lots Teleconverters & M42 lenses for equally cheap prices.

And an AWESOME P/S waterproof WIDE angle GPS WG-III for $260.00 - holy crap!

An SV mode....BRILLIANT! (with one dial for ISO and the other I set to shift program values)

I thought no one could topple Canon (or Nikon).....but Pentax is on its way.
