Pentax K-1 Trying to turn on Wifi, camera turns itself off with overheating warning
Posted By discharged

Hello,

I've been using the K-1 since launch day, probably played around with the wifi during the first days but never used it. (I do not have any memory of testing it, but I usually test functions like that when I buy new stuff, cause it's fun, if you know what I mean...) Anyway I am shooting a wedding tomorrow and this time I am supposed to be on some pictures myself, so I thought I'd try wifi connection to remotely trigger the camera.

The error message I get says "the camera will turn off to prevent damage from overheating" I get it after about 15-20 seconds of having the wifi enabled.

I got the error, tried again, got the same error again. I then proceeded with updating to the latest firmware version, still got the error. Does look like an actual fault...?

Mini earth videos with theta?

Maybe this is as simple as 1 2 3 but I am not figuring it out... I've never worked video but I've been marvelled by the theta for doing funny segments with the kids... And now I managed to stumble across a new theta V for ~$250 and I could not resist... I managed to create mini earth photos quite easily but what do I need to create the videos?

K3ii writing black frames on SD card

Can you try shooting with the smallest aperture opening possible, 22 or what it might be... Earlier pentax cameras has suffered from failiures on the aperture motor. This means that the aperture will be set to minimum. And if you have a large aperture normally the frames will be black, but if you as I suggest use a small aperture you should get rid of the black frames if it is this fault

You can adopt the same strategy with one camera aswell.

The change from night to dawn will be a bit trickier though.

The basic problem is that you want the images as identical as possible. To avoid unneccesary post processing. That is why all settings should be manual. That way you can add the same corrective settings on a large number of images and recive the same result on them all. Using any automation means having to check each image to make sure it has all the same settings... However this adds a new issue, the same settings can not capture a scene at both sunset and during the night with proper exposure.

So you are going to have to change, either manually or automatically. Most people here seem to want to promote automation for camera settings, something I am strongly against, for the reasons above and for the simple fact that you might get such a great error that you have to scrap the entire image...

I would recommend testing your setup in every way you can, my guess is that you want the night sky to move during the night shots... Positioning yourself so that the milky way is visible often provides the best results. You also want to check what ISO settings to use on the k-30 I would say 1600 or lower. The interval you choose has to be long enough to allow proper exposure when it is dark at it will get. Having a 10 second interval if the camera needs 15 seconds for exposure is not that smart :)

You have additional problems, going for something like this requires many images, the k-30 produces dng raws at around 15MB if I remember correctly. Going for 12 hours would require aprox 2900 images if you go for one every 15 seconds... That is around 45 gigabytes. So minimum a 64GB card is needed, does the k-30 support sdxc? And it is also more than 2000 more than the k-30 can take on a single charge. Can you charge it while taking shots?

Additional problems.
You need to keep the interval the same, some remote that can do interval shots is required or using the built in function... Unless you want to press that button every 5-10-15 seconds for 12 hours...

I've done more or less exactly this myself but I had two cameras on hand.

What I used: two cameras, tripod, remote shutter.
Settings: manual mode, manual focus, manual white balance and manual aperture (all manual)
1. Get a good exposure to start with.
2. Snap shots with the other camera at 1/3 or 1/2 stops above or below. Make sure that you use histogram and blowout and under exposure warning
3. Change when shots with other camera gets close to the edge.
4. Painstaking work in lightroom begins

I know, it was something called a sarcasm, but the K-30 was awesome performance for money, and the hardware was competitive concidering the k-50 was the same camera. With that said, the flagship model!

First of all, I had never seen one of these lenses before finding the ad for one. I looked at a few reviews, quickly decided that it could compliment my other gear very well and decided to give it a try.

The first impression was wow, that is one big ol' lens, I've seen smaller cars! The next impression was Wow, that is one heavy lens, it could probably be used as an anchor! Final impression was WOW, this lens is sharp, I could spot the flag on the moon with it! I thought the reviews that compared it to FA 300 or DA 300, was exaggerated, but now I am not that sure any more. This lens will better any 70-200 F2.8 I could have gotten, Sure, I lose 1 stop of light but I gain 100mm on the long end. Also I will get nice biceps with the weight of the thing!

No, It was not the same flash, and to test I did now mount my fgz and switched it to manual, it stopped at 200 and would go down to 1/160 directly. Tried again with a godox TT520 no limit at all it just jumped past 1/200 as if there was no communication from the flash at all saying it was a problem (sarcasm). It does in fact seem to be my flash, a yongnuo ring flash made for a canon but set to manual mode. Apparently there is some communication, and it creates some bug in the Pentax firmware.

First question: I am in manual mode. I attach a flash, and I want to use a shutter speed of 1/200 sec. I turn the dial from 1/5 that I am on now towards 1/200. but I normally do not turn it slowly, I just spin it fast and it might be that I get to 1/200 and a few mote steps further...

for this example let's just presume that I turned the dial 5 steps too far, It still said 1/200 in the display.. but when i turned the dial one step in the other direction it still said 1/200. I had to turn the dial 6 times in the other direction before it said 1/160 because the camera "keeps count" even though it still says 1/200.

Second question: I am expecting the LCD to try and get some sort of image on it and not just a black screen. The entire idea with a flash is to provide a light in an under exposed situation so I do not need the LV to show me that I have under exposed the image. So I want the cameras LV to try and compensate and show me what the image would have looked like had it been properly exposed, or atleast I want to be able to change it manually. If I engage Autofocus I suddenly get an image on the screen while the camera is trying to focus, since it will need the sensor to see something to focus properly but as soon as it has found focus the screen blacks out again. (it is not always black, it might also just be dark, it all depends on the amount of flash used) Not sure if a flash with TTL will work the same way.

Does the K1... zoom into focus points?

Yes it has zoom and move capablity in live view.

I've tried Nikons, Canons, Sonys and others... The pentax is a bit quirky, does many things a bit differently. Look at the three dials now for instance, Now that I am used to it I love it, when I am in manual I do not have to press any buttons except take the pic! I can control ISO, shutter and Aperture, each on a dedicated dial! Nikon, Canon, whatever owners says it is not needed. Within a few years we will see cameras from them using it aswell and they will love it, as I already do.

with that said not all of Pentax ideas work for me either. I could do with a better way to choose focus point. The placement of a few buttons are a bit off for me, and the light could have been integrated on the buttons istead of having LED-light on the back of the display, for instance...

A brand new Bug, Does not seem to be reported before... Exists on both old 1.0 and 1.10 versions of the software.

When a manual flash is connected you cannot set a shutter speed higher than 1/200 (as it should be) but if you like me just spin that wheel to get to 1/200 you probably spun it 4-5 steps too long, or more... And now comes the issue. when you want to fine-tune. maybe go back down to 1/160 or 1/100 or something you first have to tick all that extra spin off... So even though the camera itself knows that 1/200 is the maxumum available it will still go above. and if you do spin the wheel once it is at 1/200 and remove the flash it will say 1/1000 or whatever you spun it to.

Oh what a monster issue you might think, and that is right, for me it is since I am very bad at right and left (If someone yells cover right, or attack left I have to stop and think for a second what way right or left is.... People playing sports with me has learned and now yells names or a description etc.)Anyway, sorry for ranting... This means I usually just turn it either way to see what works... and now nothing works since I have to compensate for possible errors while turning earlier. it is horribly annoying

Another bug with a flash connected also present on both 1.0 and 1.10

if you are planning to use the flash and want shoot using live view, you can basically forget it right now it will just be black as the night, the display will show you what the sensor would have captured had there been no flash and when you want to fine tune the focus you will have to use the optical viewfinder. meaning that I still have to lay face down in the muck, so much for the flashy pivotable display... It is only when you switch over to AF and half press the button that the camera will give you a LCD that acutally shows something. this means that Macro with a ring flash is all optical viewfinder or nothing at the moment... As an example the 100mm macro at 1/200 and F11 with ISO 100 I will not show anything on the viewfinder except black, even with an assist light that I have on the ring flash.

And why stop there, I'll throw in a third just to be a good host. (the flash in question here is a Pentax FGZ 540 II, so no third party issue) also present on both 1.0 and 1.10

I guess it isn't really a bug, more like bad coding or implementation... When shooting TTL the first flash, the measurement flash is rather strong, and then it takes almost a second before the main flash and an image is taken. for me that is too long time.

I'd go for something weather sealed, the 100mm macro is a good start.

Then I would look for the original version of the tokina 28-70 f2.6-2.8

I would also add the tamron 70-200 f2.8

This would set you back around $1200-1400 or so and cover most of your basic needs.
