Here is a type of shot that I never thought I would take with this lens. Normally would not think of using it wide open, as it is optimized for macro use stopped down. But this is taken wide open, hand held.
Kiron 105mm f2.8 macro. Heavy hunk of metal and glass.

I really like the shots with the smc-m 40. Don't really know why this lens sometimes gets a bad reputation, as mine is quite sharp when used properly.
Also cgchang, there is nothing to complain about with those (fungus spotted) M 501.4 shots. I think that you have proven that that particular lens has something special - even with, or perhaps because of the "flaw" - you use it quite well.
All this talk of lens quality independent of camera technique is a waste of breath. IMO we can all learn to improve our images by better technique.

Here are a couple of shots from the smc-K 50/4 macro. This lens produces great color and contrast.
My first impressions are that it is more contrasty than the 50/4 smc-macro takumar in close ups. I think the same design but with slightly better coatings.

Rikenon "P" 50/1.4 -wide open on Pentax K7 (Ricoh pin was removed before mounting on camera)
