Adapters - Pentax to Sony

I have Pentax cameras and lenses going back to the Spotmatic that I bought in the 1960's and share my equipment with my daughter - between us we have a fair amount of Pentax gear, both film and digital. I have not used my Pentax gear much over the last couple of years but have been using a Fuji X100T and really like, among other things, the compact aspects of a mirrorless camera. That said, I am somewhat concerned about Pentax surviving as a viable business and when a good deal popped up I got a Sony mirrorless FF camera to try out.

As far as I can tell, the Sony bodies are the most "adaptable" relative to the universe of lenses out there. My question is, what are the best brands - functionality and construction - of adapters that are available? Years back I had quality issues with non Pentax adapters and am not looking for the cheapest solution. Given that we have a fairly large collection of lenses - from screwmount to digital - I'd like to be able to at least try them out on the Sony.

I don't care about the PC aspect; everything is in the eye of the beholder. It's just another example of the need to go "viral" and count the number of hits. It would appear that life has boiled down to this for way too many people.

I recently bought a Fuji X100T for use as a travel/carry camera and have been very pleased with both the form factor and IQ/results. As someone else said on here, the JPEG output is terrific, assuming you like the rendering. I used the camera on a trip just after I got it and have printed some of the pictures (up to 10X15 with minor cropping), with excellent results. My only issue with the camera has been getting used to the fixed focal length (35mm effective) as I have almost always shot at 50mm or longer. That said, I will probably get another Fuji mirrorless (most likely the next model of either the X-E2 or the XPro1) and an adapter for my Pentax lenses. Please keep posting your experiments here as the results are very useful for those of us with a lot of Pentax lenses.

I have owned Pentax equipment since the late 1960's and stuck with the brand when I moved into digital because I liked the size, ergonomics, had lots of K (and screw) mount lenses and always thought that the brand offered great value for the money. I acquired several digital bodies and more lenses and have continued to be pleased with the results that I get from my gear. My ultimate work product is a print and even my old DS produces great prints, within it's limits. Over the years with digital equipment, my habits have evolved much the same as with film equipment, in that I have stopped carrying a bag with multiple lenses (unless there is a very specific reason to do so) and now typically carry a body with one lens attached, be it a zoom or a prime. I really don't have a need for a full frame camera; I think that today's APSC sensors have developed to a point that I can live quite happily with the results from them. Being sometimes affected by GAS, I might get one anyway (I do have lenses for it already), except that another consideration has come into play for me.
I recently returned from a trip where I carried and used one camera, a Fuji X100T. I bought this camera to try the form factor, which I was very pleased with; talking about size not the "rangefinder" approach (which wasn't bad either). My point here, is that Ricoh/Pentax is coming out with a full frame camera, which is fine, but will now be way behind the curve on bringing a mirrorless camera to market. I understand that compact mirrorless bodies don't work with K mount lenses and the K-01 was a bust, but from product standpoint, they will be missing the market. Unless you are playing the Leica game, you've got to get some volume with some of these products. With the market going to phones and mirrorless, I think they will have problems. I'm part of some demographic that doesn't want haul heavy, bulky cameras around if I can get what I want with a substantially smaller mirrorless camera. I have no issues with my Pentax gear; it does what I want it to do at a reasonable price; that said, I'm more likely to get a mirrorless camera/system than a FF camera or even another APSC size DSLR and am concerned they will be missing a big piece of an evolving market.

Re: advice for trip to Europe

Back when I was seriously shooting film I used to travel with two bodies, a power winder, two heavy Vivitar zoom lenses that covered a range of 28-210mm between them, another fast 50mm prime and film. I carried all of this in a fairly compact bag; the Pentax film bodies were fairly small. Between constantly carrying and jiggling the bag and having to be aware of it wherever I was, I got fed up and stopped shooting for a number of years.

That said, my response is based on my current thinking. If the primary purpose of the trip is photography, then I'll carry as much as I think I need to accomplish my goal(s); those jaunts tend to be worked from a car. If I am on a trip where photography is secondary. then I go as light and compact as possible. On my last trip to Europe, I took my oldest Pentax body (DS) with one lens (35mm, f2.0), I was able to pocket the camera or comfortably wear it under a jacket. I used the camera as if I were shooting film again, with the advantage of being able to change the ISO. The photography aspect of the trip was quite comfortable and I ended up with some very nice pictures. I happen to like the rendering of the DS sensor and was able to print available light indoors shots quite nicely up to 8 X 12. Did I miss some shots because I didn't have a bag of equipment with me, yes. The trade off was that I was much more comfortable and didn't inconvenience those with me, whose goal was not photography. My larger (small bag) kit is a body, a zoom lens (18-250) and a fast prime. For me, that will most likely catch everything that I come across.
.
In the next month or so, I'll probably be getting a Fuji X100T for travel and as a walk around camera. I've been to all the cities that you mention and that camera would be adequate for me, in any of them. But, my primary reason for being there would not be photography.

New book illustrated with Pentax photos

Congratulations on the book. Having spent my working career in publishing I am very familiar with the time, effort and angst that it takes to create a book. I am especially fond of books that expose the reader to information on subjects that they may know nothing about, even if they never take it any farther. Being published, not "self published" these days is a real accomplishment and, at a minimum, suggests that the book has been vetted by people that know something about the subject matter.

Your shooting techniques (photographically) are very interesting; Would you have used a helicoptor if you were shooting for multi-page foldouts?

I think the duplicator is a very clever product that may fill a niche in the marketplace. I have a Nikon 35mm scanner; haven't used it in several years. Scanning is a huge PITA (unless you are into it) and Nikon no longer supports their scanner products. Flatbeds give marginal results on 35mm, better on MF; still a PITA to get good scans. For those of us that shot/shoot film and have X number of slides/negs around, this might be the way to go. For a scan of a special picture that I want to print and hang, I'll get a drum scan done.

Question re shooting RAW+JPEG

Can anyone tell me if the K-3 can be set to shoot a B&W JPEG + RAW? This would let you see the B&W shot on the LCD, while capturing all of the data via the RAW file. Most of my work ends up being in black and white and when I'm "in the zone" I think I pretty much think in B&W when shooting (a hangover from many years of film shooting), but this capability would be nice.

I bought (when prices dropped) my K-01 to test the sensor/software and to use for tripod mounted macro and landscape work. So far, I have only used it with my DFA 100 Macro; good combination in conjunction with a Hoodman loupe and stable tripod' Haven't had a chance to do any landscapes; expect to use it with a Sigma 10-20. I really don't envision using it for anything else as I much prefer using a viewfinder for most work.

Although I had no interest in the camera per se, I bought one when the price dropped to $300 so that I could try the sensor and software improvements (I have a K10D). Every time I pick it up. I automatically bring it up to my eye (50 years of using some type of viewfinder). My intention is to use it like a view camera, on a tripod, for macro and landscape work.

Tethering a K-01?

I bought a K-01 when the price came way down as 1. a way to evaluate the sensor and 2. to use for landscape and macro work (tripod mounted). I haven't used it very much to-date, but as I expected I don't care for using a non-viewfinder camera for handheld work. However, with the camera mounted on a tripod and the use of a Hoodman loupe to aid with focus, it's sorta like using a view camera.
In thinking about the various ways to work with this, I'm curious as to whether or not this camera can be tethered, and if so, what's the best way to do it.

I think that the manual states that if you are using a filter or HDR the format is locked to JPEG; I assume that means JPEG only. I'll give it a try.

I haven't read all of this, so this may have been asked/wished for already. I would like the ability to shoot a B&W jpeg (so as to view the picture in B&W) along with a RAW file; this would give one the ability to compose in B&W and still have the raw data.

K-01; my first shot at it

I am shooting with a K10D and a DS, both of which give me good results; actually, I don't use either as much as I should. I also occasionally shoot with a Mamiya 645, though less and less as processing becomes a greater PITA. I just ordered a K-01 body, thinking that it would be good, tripod mounted, for shooting macro and landscapes. While I have had no real interest in this camera, I decided to buy it at the greatly reduced price, to have another tool in the kit. Hopefully, a good decision.

Scanning is an art unto itself and requires a lot of time, effort and knowledge to get good results. Your comment about being really lazy, isn't the best match for scanning film. I have a 35mm Nikon scanner and a Canon flatbed that I got for scanning MF film. I've discovered that scanning doesn't really interest me and takes far too much time and effort. I use the scanners mostly to evaluate film and produce small prints/contact sheets; if I have something that I want to hang, I'll have someone drum scan it.

Introduce your... film Pentax!

The best part of this thread is that people are shooting (and in some cases discovering) film. After looking through this, I decided (for the 4th or 5th time) that I need to get my film cameras CLA'd. I have my first Pentax, a Spotmatic that I bought in the 60's, a Super Program, an ZX-M and a UC-1. Haven't used the Spotmatic or Super Program in a fair number of years; have been using the ZX-M with a wide angle, as a pocket camera. The UC-1 is a terrific little camera; some of my better film shots were with this camera. My favorite was always the Super Program; the only fault that it had (for me) was the way that it always felt somewhat uncomfortable, gripwise. To correct that, I always used it with a winder attached (still fairly small), but not always on.

Keep shooting film!

Optio E90; removing date & time?

I just returned from a vacation trip with my grandchildren and have been looking at some of their pictures. Unfortunately (to my way of thinking), one of them was using an Optio E90, with the date & time function turned on, which of course, has imprinted all of the pictures. I have promised to print, for framing, a couple of these and was wondering if there is a way to remove the date & time info. I'm guessing that it can't be done via software and I will have to clone it out if necessary, but thought that it was worth posing the question.

Need some info re flash equipment

I am considering the purchase of a flash, primarily for use with my current (and future) Pentax DSLR's, but also want something that can be used with some or all of my film cameras. The product that I have been thinking about is the Metz Mecablitz 45CL-4. I understand that it will require a dedicated module for Pentax DSLR's; will it work with both a K10D and a DS? Also, the info on your web site indicates a manual mode; does this mean that it will operate with older film cameras such as those listed below?

Pentax ZX-M
Pentax Super Program
Pentax Spotmatic
Mamiya 645 1000S
Mamiya RZ67

Thanks for your assistance.

I have a DS that I bought new (5 or 6 years ago) and sometimes prefer it over my K10D, depending on circumstances. I just took it on a trip to Europe, primarily due to it's smaller size. Took one lens (35mm FA) in an attempt to keep the size/weight down and also get back to my old film shooting style; one lens & zoom with your feet. I shot jpegs with all the settings at neutral and got pretty good results. Sometimes I think that I prefer the way that the DS renders color, over the K10D; maybe that's in my head. My DS yields good, uncropped prints up to 10X15, as long as I start with a decent file. It's been/continues to be a great camera; the only issue that I have, is that the CRV3 batteries are getting hard to find.

Battery life?

Just read through the review (well done!) and would like to get some type of approximation of battery usage. Given that the LCD is pretty much on all of the time, what are people getting on a charge? I realize that it's difficult to make a strict statement relating charge to number of RAW or JPEG's because that doesn't account for the amount of time that the LCD is on, prior to taking a shot. The review says that battery time is disappointing.

Max card size for DS?

I'm about to wake my trusty DS out of it's slumber so that I can check it out to see if it's OK for use. I'm considering using it for some travel shooting, mostly because of it's small size; thinking of going back to the old film mentality and using it with just one lens. Took a quick look at the Pentax web site to verify what the last firmware update was (V2.02), but can't determine what the max capacity/type of SDHC card that it will use is. Also, am I correct in assuming that loading the last update also loads all of the ones preceding it? It's been a while since I've needed to do this.
