A message from Adam and the PF Moderating Team:

In recent weeks and months we have received feedback - primarily from new members, but a few established ones too - regarding unnecessarily harsh, dismissive, rude and/or aggressive responses, especially (but not only) when someone raises concerns, doubts or criticisms of the Pentax brand.

PentaxForums is a brand-specific enthusiast site, and most of us here are Pentax enthusiasts. New members with critical views of the brand have a responsibility to understand the dynamics of the community they're participating in and consider the effect of their posts, and we've updated our Welcome & Forum Rules sticky post to reflect this, with guidelines for new members. Even so, all of our members - new and old - have a responsibility to respect each other's opinions (even when we disagree), remain courteous and friendly at all times, keep an open mind, and avoid jumping to conclusions, making personal comments or name-calling (terms such as "fanboy" or "troll", for example). We each represent these forums whenever we post, and it's incumbent on us to present our community as welcoming, respectful, tolerant and helpful to all.

We might reasonably hope that our most established members in particular would take this responsibility to heart, to ensure the continued popularity and longevity of our community and the brands we all support.

When faced with a post where you feel the only option is to dismiss it or "shoot it down", please consider the wider effects of your response. If rules have been broken, report the post to a moderator using the "yellow triangle" report post feature (not by PM, please) and avoid further involvement in the discussion until a moderating decision has been made. Otherwise, please be mindful of the standards referred to above when responding.

Most of all, please strive to be friendly and respectful at all times. There is never just one way to offer (or counter) an opinion. However ill-conceived or inflammatory a post may seem, responding in kind does nothing to help our community and its reputation.

The moderating team will not hesitate to take appropriate action against members who consistently impact the forum atmosphere in a negative way.

Thank you very much for your consideration, and - as always - many thanks for your valued contribution to the forums! :)

Considering Hirakawa Jun managed their design department for a decade might have something to do with that.

If Pentax is flogging the coatings as being their coatings, then the coatings are Pentax. Ricoh is not about to get caught up in a legal quagmire about false advertising. I really can’t believe that this is even a topic of conversation.

I'm not sure what relevance has to do with anything.
I mean, Leica isn't relevant to most people, but I don't read people trashing that brand for it.
I'm really fed up with the small minded tribalism that seems to consume people. It's pointless.

I don't think that is correct. My 4G phone will work just fine on a 3g network. And all of the new 5g phones will work on a 4g or 3g network.

My sister-in-law does that. I don't know how but her Facebook is a continuous stream of every picture she takes on her cell phone. 50 - 100 every day. At least it was before I blocked her..................

You should try an MZ-S w/ grip with FA lenses (Limiteds!) for a year before you dismiss the MZ-D. It doesn’t”t handle nearly as large as it looks.

Hints about future products on Twitter

There has been some interesting talk on Twitter this weekend about upcoming Ricoh/Pentax products.

I should explain the context first. The Osaka camera store Yaotomi hosted an evening with Mr. Wakashiro (name edited after correction on another site), of the Ricoh Imaging Product Planning Dept. and some of their loyal customers. The Tweets are exchanged between Yaotomi and the people who attended. There are clearly a lot of things they heard that they are not at liberty to mention, but still there is some interesting information.

Upcoming products
- The first thing to come will be a lens or lenses (not clear if referring to one or multiple)
- K-3 Evolved camera is under heavy development (they have used this "evolved" phrasing before - it's clear they don't want it to be seen as a mere K-3 III)
- Two other products that were discussed specifically, but cannot be mentioned. I assume these are not things on the roadmap, and it’s just my speculation but I think they are cameras
- He loves the idea of an LX Digital, but I don’t see any indication that it is actually coming
- When asked whether anything would come out for the centenary, he hinted at something silver (just a k-1 II limited edition?)

DA* 11-18
- The rep brought a prototype of the DA* 11-18. It looks basically complete.
- It has an indentation for attaching a “lens heater for shooting stars”.
- It doesn’t seem to be confirmed that the heater will be released.

Other
- He also brought along one of the original, never-produced K-1s. You can see it in the photos.
- When they develop cameras, they don’t ask themselves “What will sell?”, they ask “Will it be interesting to use?”
- They sold loads of Qs in Japan, but overseas was a different story (not such a surprise)
- The GXR A12 was selling well right up until the end (this is interesting to me)

Overall, it sounds like there is lots to look forward to next year.

Here is the Twitter page for Yaotomi Camera (in Japanese, of course): ??????? (@yaotomicamera) on Twitter

Announcements about coming Pentax product should not be the place to start griping about all your perceived Pentax issues. I'm tired of having every Pentax announcement used a a dumping ground for every imaginable gripe anyone has with Pentax.

You just post here because if you started a thread called "the what's wrong with Pentax thread" most of us, especially experienced users would avoid it like the plague. Personally, I just dropped in for the latest news. To bad it sent you into such a negative tailspin. Hope you recover soon.

I'm not sure many of these negative posters understand how they appear tot he rest of the forum. If this guy is trying to make first impression, he's going about it all wrong.

My suspicion is you are a camera store salesman troll from a store that doesn't sell Pentax setting up a link to point to, to chase possible customers away from Pentax. Show me where you've posted something that might change my opinion and I'll be happy to offer an apology.

3/ 27 October 2017 (Photo Plus Expo 2017 and Salon de la Photo 2017): Prototype showcased under glass. Happy few people (e.g. Yaotomi staff) are allowed to photograph the lens and play a bit with it. Second mention of the lens in a press release, this time with a more complete name "HD Pentax-D FA 50mm f/1.4 SDM AW" and first mention of the tentative launch date.

Nippon Camera Ricoh/Pentax 2019 Interview

Firstly, happy new year to everyone.

The January edition of Nippon Camera magazine came out on December 20 and it has an interview with Ricoh Pentax about their plans for 2019. I’ve been a bit busy over Christmas and New Year, so I haven’t had the time to write a summary until now. I hope it is useful.

Please remember when reading this that my Japanese reading is fairly good these days but not perfect. It’s especially difficult to interpret how definite things are and when technical matters are discussed. Having said that, I’m pretty sure I’ve understood most of this.

Anything in brackets is my added comment.

————

About their direction for 2019
They’re not the kind of company that can come out with large numbers of cameras. They plan to continue prioritizing cameras and the photographic process with customers in mind. The first topic for 2019 will be the all new GR III.

Quite a lot of the interview was about the GR III, and I’ll just refer you to the thread in the GR III, where I already posted about this. Post #499 of the following thread.
Ricoh GR III - Page 34 - PentaxForums.com

Pentax centenary
- It’s actually the centenary of the optical company that was the precursor to Pentax that celebrates it’s centenary this year.
- The actual date is in November
- They are considering how to celebrate the event, but cannot share details yet.
- They don’t think that merely putting a 100-year logo on products is what their customers are hoping for. (The implication is they will do something more)

About Q and 645
- Q has been highly valued for it’s compact size by core users. They are looking at the situation with the Q, and it is not accurate to say development in discontinued. (I think this should be taken with a pinch of salt, because in Japan, Q bodies are only available from Ricoh direct, some shops list the lenses as “production ended”, and that macro disappeared from the roadmap)
- Regarding 645, the next model is currently being considered. 645 is a very important product to the company and they are not stopping the line. (Resolute answer)

Lenses
- The interviewer mentioned that 645 users are worried about the lack of new lenses. They have not stopped development. However, for now their priority is for FF K-mount lenses.
- They have a lot of demands from full frame users, especially for lightweight tele zooms.
- They 85mm on the roadmap has been put back, but it is still coming (the strong implication is that prioritizing the tele zooms pushed back the 85mm).
- The DA* 11-18 is in the final stages of development. They expect to make an announcement before CP+.
- They are also planning a “surprise” for next year. (I take this to mean a lens not on the roadmap, because of the context of the comment)

About FF/MF mirrorless
- They expressed respect for the competing FF mirrorless systems, saying that they have many good points.
- However, they are more interested in serving their customers than following trends. They will listen to user requirements, not be swayed. (This was difficult to understand, but I think this means they are going to stick to their judgement, rather than caving in to peer pressure)
- They seem positive about Fuji’s entry into the MF market, because they think it will draw more attention to the MF market.

The K-1 upgrade
- They are proud of their achievement in clearing the logistical hurdles to making this possible.
- The reaction has been positive.
- (I can’t understand what they say about noise reduction, but it seems that they are aware that opinion is divided on the approach to noise reduction in the K-1 mark II)

The SDK
- They haven’t seen much development yet, but the reaction was greater than expected. They are currently gathering information. and looking forward to what users do with it.

———————

Any discussion of future K-mount cameras was notably absent. The interview script did not have any question about it, neither were there any comments in answers to other questions. I think this topic must be understood to be off limits for the interview, so I would not read anything into it.

Whatever Pentax releases to celebrate the first 100 years should obviously not be called Pentax LX. That was how they celebrated the 60th anniversary (released in 1980 even if the anniversary was in 1979!). The appropriate model name for the 100th anniversary would be Pentax C.

Supposedly, the German Stiftung Warentest is known to be a neutral review platform. (From Wikipedia)
Look at what is 5th and 6th here ahead of Canon
Sony haters please ignore that part and look at how well our kids did!

Sony A7III with 1.5 points (Amazon, B&H, Adorama, eBay)
Sony A7rIII with 1.6 points (Amazon, B&H, Adorama, eBay)
Sony A99II with 1.7 points (Amazon, B&H, Adorama, eBay)
Nikon D850 with 1.8 points
Pentax K-1II with 2.0 points
Pentax K-1 with 2.0 points
Canon EOS 5D IV with 2.0 points
Canon EOS 6D II with 2.1 point

I lifted this from the Sony Rumors site. I offer it not to praise Sony but to show that our K-1s are doing pretty well in some reviews.

Right. They're not patenting a product per se, but a certain aspect of it - and they want to cover as many possible cases as possible, besides the actual implementation.
Having several embodiments given as example is perfectly normal.
Having several patents linked to a single lens is perfectly normal.

There are seven examples in the patent request.

Minimum focal length is between 11.25mm an 11.29 mm. Maximum focal length is between 17.6mm and 17.7mm.

Maximum aperture is either f/2.8 (four examples) or f/2.9 (three examples).

There are basically two optical formulas with variants:

- three examples include 15 elements in 11 groups; their length at 11mm is around 8.9cm and they extend by 1.7mm to 4.7mm at 18mm.
- four examples include 16 elements in 11 groups; their length is around 9.8cm at 11mm and changes only very slightly at 18mm.

All examples include three aspheric elements: one or two (depending on whether 16/11 or 15/11) in the first element group, named G1, and two or one in the fourth element group, named G4.

G1 moves a bit when zooming in from 11mm to 18mm: towards the subject for six examples out of seven, towards the image in one example. The second element group, named G2, also moves when zooming in, towards the subject. The third element group, named G3, also moves when zooming but its movement is more complex and varies from an example to another. G4 moves towards the subject when zooming in.

Focus is apparently done by moving some elements within G2.

Below is the optical diagram of an example with 16 elements in 11 groups.
