Focussing screens for the K1 DIY split image

OEM shims used to be available through Pentax support or some camera stores could purchase them from Pentax for you. However, in the US, that seems to have stopped and OEM shims only seems to be available to the official repair provider for Pentax as part of a repair service, so quite expensive.

One option is buying a set of plastic shim stock and using the original metal shim as a template to cut out new shims with a hobby knife. I've made a set of new shims, but haven't gotten around to actually installing them as my current shimming is ... good enough. If you have access to a proper laser cutter through like local hobby fab groups/library, you probably will get better cleaner cuts and may be able to use metal shim stock.

There's the ever prevalent "Improved stability for general performance" that no one knows actually entails. Usually if there is a bug fix, they would list it separately.

Has anyone found a good case for this lens? Been thinking of trying lens pouches to move some weight from my shoulders to hips. I tried the JJC 2X-Large size, and its just a bit too snug and a tad short if I want to put the lens in with the hood attached. The BPAULL BL-0009 specs looks to be a little bit wider and taller, and might just be enough to comfortably accommodate the lens.

One thing I experimented with recently is plastic shim stock. I took the original shim, used packaging tape to affix it to the plastic shim stock, and cut along the edges with an xacto knife to get a replica. Very tedious, especially with the thicker material and the edges have lots of burrs. I might try and see if my friend's cricut machine can cut the shim stock with enough precision to get cleaner results. The shims provided by focusing-screen was good enough for now, but eventually I'll see if I can get greater accuracy with these shims I made.

In other news, uscamera is no longer able to order repair parts from Pentax (only Precision camera can order parts) so they're not able to order the OEM shim set anymore.

Any hints that KAF⁴ could bring more 3rd party lenses??

Relatively new, introduced with the DA 55-300PLM in 2016, only other lenses are the DFA* 50mm, DFA* 85mm and DFA 70-210 f4

If I remember correctly, Sigma did cite the mechanical aperture being one part of the why they dropped Pentax. Nikon also had mechanical apertures, but at the time, they had the market share to justify the extra cost. Of course, that could have all been just a small part, when it was almost entirely the sales numbers.

Sigma offers lens mount conversion service to Pentax K for the current "global vision" generation of lenses (up until they dropped support), which suggests that they probably still have the tooling to make K-mount versions of their last DSLR offerings. However, if they want to take advantage of the mechanically simpler KAF4, they would have to reverse engineer the communication protocol and there's a good chance they wouldn't make back that investment.

Aftermarket K-1 Focusing Screens: metering impacts?

I have both the Canon S-type (super-precise matte) on my K-3 and A-type (microprism dot) on my K-1 and have been meaning on doing some more extensive testing with an 18% grey target. In the meantime, I have noticed that both screens do impact the metering slightly depending on some variables, like the wide-open aperture of the lens, T-stop vs F-stop differences, and for the A-type, the AE mode and whether the subject is in focus. However, usually shooting in raw gives enough leeway to correct any minor error.

Your K-3 has both Pentax and Ricoh on it, so it's a sports DSLR, which, isn't exactly inaccurate given the current lineup.

I wonder if the fact that the GPS module also had other sensors (a compass and to a lesser extent, an accelerometer), may also complicate matters and make placement of the module even more restrictive. There are camera models that offer built in GPS for geotagging, but don't have compass function. But since GPS on Pentax is synonymous with Astrotracer, which requires these extra sensors, they must be present if Pentax wants to add in-body GPS.

If you use a Canon compatible Godox flash with a Pentax trigger, will you retain P-TTL, or will the flash operate as a manual flash? I suppose the electronics could be the same, like the brand agnostic AD200s etc., and the only Canon-specific aspect could be just the hotshoe foot.

If you don't need TTL, cheapest is probably the Godox TT600 (~$60, 4x AA). No TTL, but does offer remotely controlled power settings.

If you need TTL, Godox TT350p aka Flashpoint Zoom-Mini for Pentax ($70-85, 2x AA). There is also a Li-ion version (V350p/Zoom Li-ion Mini). Godox didn't make a Pentax version of their TT860 or TT685 flashes, so the next one is the V1 flash (Li-ion) and then the various off-camera flashes/strobes.

In theory, you could use any of Godox's "X system radio" flashes branded for others (Sony/Nikon/Canon) and they might still work, but just as manual flashes.

The R2 Pro Mk II and R2 Mk II (Godox X2t) share similar specs, basically the same radio inside (protocol/compatibility, # of channels, ID codes, range)
  • The pro has a large display and sticks out from the camera at a 45 degree angle. The non-pro has a smaller display and sits parallel of the camera, though the hotshoe foot does cause it to stick out quite a bit

  • The pro supports more lighting groups (16 vs 5)

  • The pro supports TCM - TTL converted to Manual. This will "save" the last used TTL power level into the manual power setting so you can have consistent lighting in following shots.

  • The non-pro has a hotshoe on top that allows TTL passthrough, so you can have an on-body flash as well as your remote flashes. Unlike Cactus brand triggers, which is a transceiver, the R2 mkII is a transmitter only. You would need a Godox X1r receiver, which I don't believe were made for Pentax TTL flashes.

  • Non-Pro R2 Mk II and R2 Pro Mk II added bluetooth to allow connecting to a smartphone app

Also, the R2 Pro MkII is exclusive to Adorama Flashpoint and doesn't have a Godox equivalent.

Same as the Godox X2T-P, just under Adorama's Flashpoint brand. Should work with both Godox X and Flashpoint R2 flashes/strobes. Listed retail for $59.99.

Since Cactus' presumed demise, I believe this is probably the remaining option for a TTL radio trigger for Pentax cameras.

I'm wondering, did anyone ever DIY their own grip for their KP? If the KP were more popular, I would expect to have seen a market for third party/custom grips. In theory, you could have done something like a custom headphone or shoe insoles and have a grip designed for your particular hand.

While the 150-450 was designed with a FF image circle, it came out a year before the K-1, so it's initial life was in a purely APS-C ecosystem.

I don't think long exposures heavily utilize the buffer. It's only after the imaging sensor is finished collecting photons that that information is processed and then sent to the buffer to be written to the card. So taking a 5min exposure is basically the same as a 1/125s exposure from a data flow perspective; and if you collect more light than the sensor can handle, then it just maxes out and clips. So if you're doing interval shooting for astro, the rate is usually slow enough that the time it takes to take a shot is more than enough time to write the previous image to SD card, meaning you'd never run into buffer issues, just limited by the battery and SD card storage.

Looks like this video is supposed to mimic a "hands on" demonstration if you would have been able to attend CP+ in person.

2:55 - Dual slot. Departure from K-1 and K-3 where the SD card slot 2 is now on the lens side. Slot 1 is the one that is UHS-II compatible.
4:15 - Comparison of the K-3 and larger K-3 III viewfinder
5:45 - Shooting at High burst speed. Auto caption says 30 images RAW+ (32 RAW) before buffer fills, but the video shows getting more (about 36-39), maybe because of compression or buffer clearing during shooting. Takes about 14 seconds after stopping to clear buffer.

7:30 - Showing the touch screen functionality and new menu layout
11:20 - New aperture recording for older lenses
15:00 - View through viewfinder to show shorter blackout time vs K-3
