My camera bag doesn't let me keep it on the lens. Very tight quarters... it's not a bag that was meant for a massive lens like that. I should upgrade, but I've really fallen off photography lately.

That is, indeed it, but wow.. that's around $150 Cdn (and out of stock). I might have a couple more leads too, and I have a feeling these days that item probably won't come back into stock... :/

From my research, Pentax has pulled out of Canada almost entirely. I can't find anyone.

Well! Having the part number worked. I found one in stock at Adorama for much cheaper than the UK quote. Still more than I'd like, but it's worth it.

I have, sadly, lost the L-shaped metal tripod attachment piece for my lens. I'm wondering if anyone here knows how I can go about getting a replacement, as all camera shops I can find and all online searches are leading me pretty much nowhere. I've tried emailing Ricoh Imaging, but haven't heard anything back.
Does anyone know if any "universal" ring connectors work at all? Not being able to put this lens on a tripod REALLY cuts back on the type of work I do (mostly self portrait in nature). It's like losing a piece of my body.
Help!

With this flash, you'd have to use the camera primarily in Manual mode to make the most out of it, as the flash itself doesn't seem to have any real auto-settings.
*EDIT* Oops, I guess it says it does have more settings that what it looks like in the photos... still, I'd pass on it myself.
I don't know much about Digital Concepts (the makers of this flash) though, so can't comment on quality in any way.
If I were you, I'd look at a cheaper Sunpak or Vivitar (something like the 730AFPK, which tilts and swivels and can be had for around $60)

I don't have the K10D in front of me, but I think you'll find the 2-sec MLU under the FN button and then going to the top menu. It'll look like a circle with a line with a mini-2 in the corner.
Then all you need to do is attach the cable-release, and it'll be ready to fire. You shouldn't need any other settings.
You also don't need Bulb Mode unless you want complete control over your shutter without having to adjust on-camera. So basically that's just a personal preference thing.

I didn't vote, because there isn't an answer up there that reflects what it would actually take for me to switch brands.
The answer is.. I would switch if my needs weren't being met by the system I was currently with.
Plain and simple.

We travelled the Jasper - Kamloops route coming home from Alberta this May when the Trans-Canada was closed for 2 days due to a mudslide outside Golden.
Unfortunately, by the time we got to Mt. Robson, it was already almost dark.. and I didn't have a tripod of any kind on me :/ Suffice it to say, no Mt. Robson photos.

I am hearing more positive things about the 50-135mm, and it's the lens that covers my own needs better, but my confidence with Pentax extends to far more than just a couple of extremely-hyped lenses taking forever to come out and then being nothing special when they do.. heh.
I'm giving the company until next Summer to do something to change my mind... so unless they do more than minor body upgrades, constant announcements that lead to not much of anything, refusal or inability to get lens production and production of other vital components (such as batteries and flash-guns et al.) to a point where they are easily obtainable and not "out of stock" for months and moths at a time, and everything else that Pentax seems to be doing lately...
Well.. I'm just hoping that they can pull the socks up.

Pentax *rushing* the lens? It was delayed forever... and now many of the initial reports range from "eh" to "ack!"

If that first sample is any indication, the edge sharpness is practically non-existant.
I'd have to see a few more samples of course, but so far, no in the least bit impressed.

Metz has a brand new flash coming out that will be P-TTL compatible. I'd wait for it.
It's the 58 AF-1 digital, and it was announced that there'll be a Pentax/Samsung mount.

This kind of thinking is actually rather worrisome and misguided.
Just because someone has something, doesn't mean they are automatically able to have anything else. Perhaps this guy scrimped and saved for months upon months to get a camera body he truly desired, instead of settling for something else. Maybe he had that Sigma laying around from an old film body. Maybe it was given to him as a gift. Maybe he's scrimping and saving *again* to be able to afford a lens he truly wants and the whatever he has now is perfectly fine for him. Maybe he's just happy using Sigma lenses.
So, "Why not spend the extra $500?" All of the above could explain that.
*EDIT* I certainly don't hope that when I have the K10D out with the Tamron on it that people don't automatically think, "Boy, why didn't he just spend the extra $1000 for the FA* 28-70mm f/2.8, he can obviously afford it carrying around the K10D!" ;)

A little bit of mis-information here. I have a 540FGZ flash, and it works exquisitely for:
1) Bounce Flash
2) High Speed Synch and Fill Flash
3) Wireless off-camera flash
Yes, it can have a tendency to under-expose at times with P-TTL using direct flash, but I can guarantee most people that buy a high-priced flash gun aren't using it so they can stick it on a camera and blind people by firing it into their eyes. That's the *ONLY* time I've ever seen this flash under-perform, so telling people that it is "Only good for Macro Photography", isn't being completely fair or honest.
As for the flash in the auction, you just have to use some common sense when using a flash of that type. You are best off sticking to a flash with tilt & swivel so that you can control your lighting more than something that just tilts, or doesn't do either. Another recommendation? Get a diffuser of some sort. A Stofen Omnibounce, a Lightsphere, or some kind of on-flash mini-lightbox. Something.

This is also entirely inaccurate in another way..
There was a grass-roots movement among the Pentax communities that got a ton of Pentax shooters to start submitting there in great numbers. Great numbers of submitters means great numbers of picks. I stopped submitting because I was noticing that the quality of a lot of POTDs were starting to fall off significantly, and there were a lot of entries from all brands that were, sometimes, even less than snapshots. There's no doubt that for the most part, the guy running the site is doing his best, but because it's a one-man-show, the subjectivity is just too much of a mark against it for it to be used as *ANY* kind of basis on camera brand "superiority".
To get back to the original post:
The Canon cameras are well regarded as being the "sharpest" due to in-camera processing that produces a very stock-photography type of plasticity. I guess it depends on what you mean by sharp. Canon also has, probably, the best or easiest upgrade path.. so that's something to look at if you feel you ever need to go that way. As for what Canon cameras are best suited for - Sports, Wildlife and Photo Journalism due to availability of long, fast lenses and high FPS rates in their bodies.
Nikon has a very nice upgrade path as well, but the look of their images are a lot less plasticized like Canon. This is a good or bad thing depending on your preference. Lens availability is top-drawer. The real bonus in my view is build quality. Both Nikon bodies and lenses are top-quality and very solid. Canon, in their less-than-top-line bodies tend to be flimsy and plastic-feeling. Nikon is best suited for Photo-Journalism and Studio-Portraiture, due to solid body features that can take rough handling, even at the lower end, and a fantastic flash/wireless system.
Pentax is feature-rich for price. Bang-for-the-buck, you cannot do better than Pentax. They produce images that approach a more "film-like" status right out of the camera, which again is dependent on preference. You can use lenses that are 30 years old with few problems (metering can be an issue sometimes), and build quality is absolutely solid. Drawbacks include not being able to *find* lenses, or being able to pay for them if you do (and I'm talking good, fast lenses here, not M-50mm f/2s), and next-to-no upgrade path whatsoever. Pentax is best suited for Legacy shooting. Natural Light portraiture, Macros, and a viewfinder best suited for Manual Focus.
That's the technical breakdown in a nutshell.. though I leave out a lot of minor stuff, of course.
as jfdavis says.. you'll be able to pull fantastic images out of all three brands, and any other brand on the market. Choosing which camera you get will come down to these major points.. which has nothing to do with the brands themselves, but how one certain brands *feels*:
A) How it fits in your hands - Holding every camera in your price range for more than just 5 minutes. Get a feel for them. You'll find that a camera that fits your hand is going to be a majority decision breaker
B) Shooting Style - What do you shoot most? Portraits? Sports? Journalism? Family candids? Think first about what the majority use of your camera will be, and then look at a system that most compliments that. Does the system have available lenses for your style? Does it have features that would help? Any system can be used for any type of shooting, but some are tailored better for certain styles and can be beneficial to you in the long run if you do some research first.
C) Accessibility - The last and probably least important, but not to be underestimated. Do you have access to equipment from friends and family? It might be a good idea to find out. If you can borrow equipment or possibly buy some off someone for a very good price, this can also be a determining factor. A lot of people choose a brand because they already had equipment from a film camera laying around that they can use on their new digital. Worth a thought.
Anyway, good luck on your decision, and I hope you find the right fit for yourself. Whatever it may be.
