Custom QR Plate for K3 Mk.III

I love the Herringbone handgrips (in conjunction with a neck strap in the great outdoors for rough terrain trekking), and with the K3 BG (Battery Grip), I needed a good plate. I used the CustomSLR plate with the added strap lug. Best plate I found, Since I use the BG, the new lugs are added to make installation easy. For QR now I just jeep a Herringbone hand screw plate in a pouch on my neck strap if I need it.

I use that adhesive sticky octopus rubber no slip tape on the bottom of the Battery Grip and in the bottom of the large lens hoods (usually on the CPL door) to keep things from sliding or scratching.

Too Heavy, at 64 y.o. too much to lug in the jungle any more. New DA*s are just fine.

I believe most FF glass has a distinct advantage... Sensor is in the middle of the image circle for APSc. Nice light, corners obviously sharper...

We put LensCoats on all of our big glass. Keeps the windows secure, roll the neoprene back for access... I've had to buy a few lens hoods over the years, sell the left over parts on eBay to folks that needed parts, a minor cost recovery....

Japanese Accounting rules are very detailed on how R&D costs are allocated... Asahi (Now Ricoh/ Pentax) is a proper run, conservative company. I believe their quarterly report....

---------- Post added 08-04-21 at 10:52 PM ----------

I am 100% comfortable with Japanese enterprise accounting. It makes FASB look loose... As an MBA, and CFE (Board Certified Fraud Examiner), i would look at many, many, many US/ EU firms before I questioned Ricoh/ Asahi. Simple for me... I'd invest in that firm...

This is the most critical improvement next to PLM. I used up 3 of these on global shoots, all for motor failure. If the 16-50 PLM is as good as the 11-18, there will not be competitive lenses near them...

If we want to see the next 10 years of Pentax, lenses will get refreshed, more high end glass coming, think Leica thoughts in Japan, with leadership in DSLR, IMHO

Practical Impacts of new K3-III capabilities on Lens Selection - Coatings & Apertures

I missed the 150-450, kept that. I'm excited to use Astrotracer both on the 11-18 and longer, just bought an IDAS LPSD-1 filter in 82mm, will fit the 11-18, the 500mm Tamron, and the 150-450 with a slight ring. We also kept the 70-200 DA*, it rocks.

I used to drag (into backpack wildlife shoots) the 300 FA* 2.8, a Greenie Manfrotto w/ gimbal, and.... Well you know. The 300 took too much of my diminishing "lift capacity". I hated to lose the FA*300/2.8 but I am hoping that the DA* F4 will "keep us afloat" EV wise....

With more and more excursions in cramped quarters and day trips, smaller is getting better.

We are liquidating our FF glass FA* 24, 28-80, 300FA*/2.8 and DC 12-24/4, DC 18/135wr, FA 50/1/4, DFA 15-30, 24-70, Sig 150-500 DG-OS USM.

Keeping/ bought- DA*11-18, HD16-50PLM, DA*60-250/4 SDM, DFA100macro/2.8wr, SMCDA10-17FE, DA*300/4, DFA* 70-200/2.8 and a 500mm Tamron mirror.

Question driving the conversion/ purge.... Whether by dynamic range or other sensor driven capability, is the K-3 III good enough to move to smaller aperture/APSc glass... Will the drop from a 300mm /2.8 crimp us when we use 300/4?

We can see the effects of coatings on the bench. We can see lens speed in the wild.

Is anyone else resetting their kit? Will the 1 stop loss on F4 vs f2.8 glass be missed with such amazing new capabilities?

We'd love your thoughts... THX

Great points. Simply said, we have been Pentaxians since Super Program, endured the delays over the journey (I moved from RTS, Wife off F4). Never looked back. Back in the day, the only decent non-German glass was Pentax, heck they licensed their coating process to the others. Still a long slog with some very dry spells...K3 was a big relief, K1 stellar for FF, but K-3III? The Game changer. I remember the President's interview of 5-7 years ago about Pentax becoming the Leica of Japan.... They are well on the way.... We could use a bit of longer glass, but the strategy is sound.... Let the big guys bash each other about.... Nothing wrong about being a Bentley in a world of Chevys...

With K-3III, All Metz 58AF2 functions, All 26AF2, All 360FGZ and All 540 FGZ work. AF160Ring seems fine as well (with usual limiting parameters).

I'm still "lost" in all of the touch screen customization, took days to set it up...

Only complaint so far... The "Named" u1-u5 functions the names don't show up on the monitor, LCD, or Viewfinder, hence I still have to remember each one. Old age sucks. Time for Ginko root... :) If I've missed something on this, please feel free to give me a nudge...

Lenses: Marco 100 WR is incredible, 11-18 is great, 16-85 will hold on till 16-50 comes out, 300F4 is outstanding. Bosses' Siggy 150-500 DGOS is AOK (prior idiosyncrasies aside), Her 18-270 walk-around is AOK (convenient, but it is what it is :))

Hand Strap lug in the battery grip lakes herringbone easier, no plate until tripod needed.

I really wanted to find a few more irritants, so far? Nada...:)

So far very impressed. Sensor is so good, FA* 300 F2.8 and FA*85 1.4, DFA 15-30, DFA 24-70 and DA 12-24, F 50 1.4 have left the building. NOW, I can use smaller glass (except for the DFA* 70-200 2.8 and the DFA 150-450). Now all I need is a new 16-50 PLM, and I'm done :) Currently testing Legacy flashes (PTX 360 and 540 FGZ), a Metz 58AF-2, and a 26-AF-2, to see if anything changes from K-3..

The build quality is great. New Battery grip has lug for hand grip built in, (no more plate until I need a tripod/monopod), all batteries work, cards format in a quarter of the time, Bluetooth/ wifi with Image Sync are perfect, and... Drumroll.... THE GPS DATA GOES TO EXIF from our phones! Which means many sites without Cell service will still need the module (Who cares)... :)

2 comments.... I would like the AF button moved to a spot where it is not inadvertently held/ tripped. Our research determined that was the fastest way to anger the "mirror flipping" demons in the K-3s we operate. Also a slightly higher rear thumb ridge would aid grip for smaller hands not using a hand strap to carry low.

My view on the K3(x) or whatever the next "uptown" APS-c DSLR (aka "Birder" box) is not really due to resource constraints at Pentax. Their planning cycles are remarkably predictable (IMHO)... They are waiting for the firming up of a 30+mp sensor (Not sure if it will be SONY), so they can "fast follow" the Next Gen CaNikon offering, but repeat the play of lower cost, better glass, more features. Within the announcement of a viable 30mp APS-c (my estimate 32mp APS-c) sensor with the right pitch and crosstalk approach, 3-6 months out, CaNikon a month after, add 3-4 months for Pentax, We'll get teased. I'm wagering for November to Feb teases.

AF, Lens Data, Coatings, and I believe (senior moment here) one for barrel design/formula for some gen2 Nikon AF glass (late 90s)... AsahiMan has a much better recall than me... Nice job Vanya...

HD Pentax-D FA* 70-200mm on a K-70???

Absolutely. The 60-250 only had one maintenance stop, every 2-3 years I send my main lenses to CRIS for calibration (preventative). SDM was perfect (not like my 16-50 3 motors in 5 years and a front barrel replaced/jammed), would work quite well with HDTC1.4x (my urban lower profile combo). if it was F2.8 (but DA size), wouldn't have swapped it out. For me, I spend a lot of time in deep woods/ tropics where ambient/ conditions don't always allow for flash easily. MF/ QF helps a lot...:)

I shoot a K-3 in the wild. I used to use the 55-300, great, light, but needed more light. I moved up to the 60-250 F4 DA*. Exceptional lens in all ways, light, small (for what it is), world class IQ. Wanted more light, moved up to 70-200 DFA*. Similar IQ to the 60-250 DA*, better at low light. Heavy.. no make that HEAVY. But for work afield, no ZOOM creep (extending from gravity) while walking. I wanted the larger aperture, was willing to trade off weight. If you don't plan on going to FF or use a TC a lot, I'd look at the 60-250 DA*. Great price too. NEVER had any issues with it.:)

I can't disagree with your logic on the limiteds, I didn't know of the 2016 run. I am definitely with Norm on the buying opportunities. My hope on the bigger glass is due to the higher CA on big FA* primes. The 560 has much lower CA than the 300 f2.8 and the 400 f5.6 in the FA* lenses. I easily dump it in post, but I wish I didn't have to. 🙂

I expect a refresh on the limiteds (easier), the 85 next, then an F4 70mm to 2xx or 3xx something, then a revamp of a 400mm f 5.6 and MAYBE a 600f4 revamp (refresh of the FA design. K-1 will hold steady for a while, APSc is waiting for a 28-36mp sensor with shift that can take some motion (like the non-pentax one)....and the next gen MF refresh to 100mp, with a 600mm for it...
