This image is of the Big Boy train heading through Echo Canyon, Utah. The train was part of the 150-year celebration of the driving of the Golden Spike, which commemorated completion of the transcontinental railway in the United States. It had rained all night and was humid and cold, perfect conditions for steam!

To me, this film image is beautiful. It is of my wife and son on the day my son was born, and was taken in the hospital room. He's our only child and this remains the best day of my life. I believe this image captures the beauty of the day, and of new life. It was taken with a Pentax K1000, SMC 50mm f1.7, and Ilford HP5 film. Developed in Kodak HC110. This is a scan, but we have a silver gelatin print hanging in our home.

The Great Salt Lake, in Utah, USA, is an inland sea. It is home to some of the worlds largest gatherings of migratory birds. I've tried for years to photograph a sunset there that captures the beauty of the place. With this image, I may have finally accomplished that. The areas of snow and ice contrast nicely with the intense colors of the setting sun.

While fishing along the Weber River, in Utah, USA, I observed an adult Great Horned Owl flying to and from a nest in the distance. Upon closer inspection, I saw the nest was occupied by these three owlets. The next day, I returned with my camera gear. Despite trying to not alert them as I approached, they noticed my movement, which led to this wide-eyed image. Not wanting to disturb them, I took a few images and quickly retreated.

Wild stallion in the west desert of Utah, USA. My son and I hoped to see some wild horses on this trip to the west deserts of Utah, USA. We were just about to give up and head home when a large group of horses came over the hill, heading straight at us. As the group paused a safe distance from where we were, this stallion broke from the group and charged towards us. At the last moment, he stopped and spun quickly. I happened to capture the split second that his mane flew to the side and dust arose from his hoofs. It wasn't until I looked at the image at home that I realized I was probably in danger. It was a spooky moment...they are big animals...but I'm glad I captured it.

During a Middle Fork of the Salmon River, Idaho, USA, trip I was fortunate enough to make an image of these whitewater rafts, with a spectacular sunset. I used a long shutter speed to smooth the moving waters and blend the uneven lighting in the river.

From near Ben Nevis, the highest point in Britain, and the seaport town of Mallaig, runs the Jacobite steam locomotive, otherwise known as the Hogwarts Express. This is the train that carried Harry Potter and his magical friends in the Harry Potter movies. Running since 1901, the train passes the deepest freshwater lake in Britain, Loch Morar, and crosses some of the most scenic land and ancient viaducts imaginable, including the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct.
Today the town of Mallaig is a bustling fishing and business port, certainly not hurt by the demand of worldwide Harry Potter fans wanting to ride the Hogwarts Express. Of particular interest to me, is a small island slightly off the coast of Mallaig, the Isle of Rum. This island was owned by a relative, George Bullough, and he built a fine castle there in 1897, the same year construction on the Jacobite train was begun.
This image of the train crossing one of the old viaducts was taken as I hung out the train window...my wife and son keeping a lookout for tunnels and branches that may not have been good for my skull.
