K3 flip mirror issue still exists?

Hi guys,

Is the mirror flip issue still there?
Is it fixed with 1.03 firmware.

There are two videos that showing the issue. But they all named Ricoh, instead of Pentax. So I thought that Newer production are named as Pentax, the issue may disappeared on newer K3s.
Am I guessing good?

hi friends,

I gave him the lens back yesterday. I hope that we could make a deal at lower price (on a very first day, he was meaning 150,000 tugriks which equals approximately $80 for the lens). But he changed his mind a little. He raised a price too much to 500,000 tugriks, which equals $300.
It is much higher price for me to spend on defective, not sharp at wide open lens.

this video raised my hope.
Exactly same as this lens on video.

around 24-35mm, it is stiffest range.

Hello Pentaxians,

I just bought the k5iis and ordered two lenses for it. Sigma 17-50 EX DG and Pentax F 50mm f2.8 macro.
Lenses arrived later than the body and flash and a grip.

So I went to local Camera shop and saw Sigma 24-70 EX DG Macro (older Version). And Asked shop owner that If I could bring the lens to home and try out for few days. He gave me, because he knew me enough.

The lens was used and in poor condition. But glasses are clean. the Only and biggest issue was stiff zoom ring. It must be dropped and got mechanical issue inside.

Zoom ring is rotates normally if camera is portrait position. So it is enough to check its abilities. And used it at two events.

It is way too soft at f2.8 for an EX lens. but it brings EX quality sharpness at f4.
So I am interested in this lens. Now what I consider is that if I can fix the stiff zoom ring issue.

Have any one fixed this kind of Zoom ring stiffness?
Many says that I could lubricate the ring with gun oil, many says that I could open the lens from front element and reach to the location where zoom ring slides and lubricate with synthetic oil.

Please help me, I have two more days to bring the lens back to the shop. I have to decide to buy or not.

Of course the other lenses came and day work OK. Sigma 17-50 EX DG HSM is the sharpest lens I have ever held.

I agree with you. Today is my first day I am shooting with a lens on the body.
The lens is of course sigma 24-70, which makes ex sharpness at f4. And I shot more than 400 photos to try the lens and the body.
I didn't see any moire on back lcd.
Pttl error I was mentioning was acceptable. Not that bad as k5.
The sigma lens is a bad copy, has too stiff zoom ring, my wife couldnt turn the zoom ring from 24 to 70.

Third party grip comes for only $30. It is not WR. But I had it before with my k5. It was ok, quality was high, functions are same as I thought (I have never hold original ones). So it was easy to me to decide.

Lenses I meant are not delivered yet. They may come next week.
Today I went to local camera shop and found Signa 24-70 f2.8 ex dg older version and asked a shop owner to test it for few days and now I have it on my new k5iis.
I will bring the lens back him next week.
I will submit another post to warn someone who considers to buy this lens.
I wont recommend this lensto anyone. It is much soft at 2.8.

---------- Post added 04-12-14 at 05:07 PM ----------

Pttl problem is still there. But better than k5. Bounce flash makes underexposed photos. A mode of the af540fgz is not as smart as metz af58's. But when using bounce flash, using the A mode is better. Pttl underexposes.
Of course the k5iis body is updated to the latest 1.07 version.

Again. I miss my Metz af58

I made purchases, But still waiting for them, except K5iis body.

I have bought many things in last March, spent above average via Paypal, then Paypal limited my account after my last purchase. They may suspected because of suddenly raised Paypal transaction. I was spending $200 monthly, but in March, it reached $3000 because of new gear purchase and set of shock absorbers for my car.

Following things I bought, what do you think of them?:
-K5iis, used body
-New Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 DC EX HSM
-Used Pentax F 50mm F2.8 Macro,
-New other Pentax AF 540 FGZ
-Third party battery grip
-Lowepro Nova 180AW

and small stuffs such as battery and blah blah.

It is not the one, I bought two replica d-li90 batteries with charger for $18 off Ebay. Seller said it was shipped, I waited two months for them. then Seller issue refund. I bought on Ebay two batteries again and they delivered fine.
After three months, The batteries I bought first is delivered today. So shocking day.

No I can consider Sigma 17-50 f2.8 OS HSM.
Is it really better than Tamron?

I think that K5iis' sensor can produce sharper image than k5ii, so I should buy sharper lens for the body.

Dear Pentaxians,

THank you for being with me these days. I made my last decision and made a purchase. Yesterday was early to post on this thread that I had bought the K5iis, because someone who quoted me had'nt made his last decision yet.
But this morning, he sent me an Email that our deal was done. Deal condition was: $425 for three month old, K5iis body only. Isn't it great deal. I sold my previous K5 for approximately $410.

The low price was not the only reason that I chose the Pentax again. I visited to my friends and tried Canon bodies and went to shops and checked Nikons.

---------- Post added 03-27-14 at 09:03 AM ----------

Now, I am going to watch all over on Ebay to get some accessories for it

I shoot RAW and in M mode. Maybe you are not familiar with the Overexposure problem of the K5 body. Third party and even Pentax flashes produce overexposure when in PTTL mode. I had a Metz AF58, which is fantastic flash unit. It was perfect in PTTL with my previous Kx, good with K7 and Worst with K5. There were at least two stops of overexposure at wide angle and 0-1 stops of overexposure at 200-300mm focal range.
And I heard K5ii became better in PTTL and K3 is problemless in PTTL. Of course K500, 30, 50 are fine in PTTL mode too.

---------- Post added 03-26-14 at 05:46 PM ----------

Focus confirmation was always working even in MF. It just beeps or focus confirmation light turns on in Viewfinder when I catches focus on central AF point by turning the focus barrel.
My Kx assisted by this feature well with manual lenses. but K7 and K5 are not doing well.
Anyways, I love the green button on K5 that shifts exposure speed automatically when using both A and Manual lenses.

Nope. Sold every single thing related to the K5. Didn't keep even a AAA battery :).
That is why I thought of Canikons.

What would you choose?, You have both of them. K5iis with lens and ... OR the K3 body

Hey friends, It is a shame, I changed my mind twice a day like a girl.
I was holding and trying our friends' 7D and 5Diii. I didn't like them. 7D can't catch accurate AF in low light with L24-105, 17-55 f2.8. 5Diii was better. in bright condition, they were fast and accurate. I like when see lots of AF points via viewfinder. 7D produce unacceptable noise when see photos on PC. of course ETTL was perfect on both DSLR. Speedlights were 600ex, 430ex.

So I decided to make decision later to take a good look at K5iis and K3.

What would you choose if you start buying gears from following options:
#1 K5iis + Sigma/Tamron 17-50 f2.8 + Grip/flash
#2 K3 body only

It is my current budget can do by now. What would you choose If you were me? The Key of the question is K3 is really big upgrade to choose rather than K5iis with lens and ...?

Hehe. $80-150 is less but I leave in a country where average monthly salary is around $400.
And I really am familiar with the Pentax. it's been 5 years since I bought the Kx, which was absolutely excellent body for beginners.

By the way, the first thought of Canikon was appeared when I saw the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 art.

I almost chose the Canon 7D. I think that I'd have many advantages if I choose Canon. There are my friends who use Canon and have beautiful lenses and they lend their gears to each other. I could team up with them. As I remember, there are Sigma 12-24, Sigma 18-35, L 24-105 f4, Tamron 70-300 expensive model and many speedlights. I would join in when I have Canon 24-70 L or Tamron 24-70 VC.

I will let you know guys when I decide.

---------- Post added 03-25-14 at 11:16 AM ----------

I will always love K5's accurate metering, ISO3200, 6400 results; built in Shock reduction; The Green button that shifts shutter speed when using manual lenses, which was super helpful and fast.

I won't forgive the terrible PTTL with external flashes, wrong focus confirmation when using manual lens.

I had upgraded my kx to k7, k7 to k5. My cousin kept asking me and bought my k5 set. All of the set. even battery case.
Now I am free, I don't have any lens, flash, accessories.

following infos I found on internet:
- at first, I looked at K5 on secondary market. K5 was lovable body. But I don't want to do management while using a PTTL flash guns.
- I looked at K5iis, but #1 there is still minor PTTL error, and needs extra $250 for no AA filter and upgraded AF system. K5 was OK with me. #2 I don't want to spend half a price for the newer AF system. #3 I often shoot weddings where every body wear patterned clothes, so there will be Moire party If I have K5iis.
- Then looked at the all new K3. It was pricey. but feasible. But there is still errors. mirror flap issue, still PTTL minor issue. K3 produces less quality image than the k5. Digital SR during Video capture panics easily.

I don't know what to choose.
I even think of Nikon D7000 or Canon 7D. There is a huge after market globally, easy to find chance to buy and sell locally.
I know that the Nikon Canon have big body, not weather sealed like K5 series, not good at high ISO, can't beat k5ii at AF-ing in low light.

What do you think? What will you suggest me?
Please give me a reason, why I ought not to choose another brand.

I was considering the gap-less thing. is it really a flare-less?

---------- Post added 03-21-14 at 10:51 AM ----------

do you mean that the k5iis pretends to focus on central focus point? I noticed this on my k5. Many times I check twice or triple or whatever times the AF point selector. Because it really loves to catch focus on central point, rather than others.

Hey friend, I see that you have Sigma flash. How is it pairing with your K5iis on PTTL mode? is there any overexpose?

I want to be confident while AF-ing. sometimes K5 kills me with its AF. when focus point way further, K5 tells me that "OK, here is a red dot, you are now focused, now shoot". :)
other major problem is the PTTL. Can't use PTTL because of its randomly overexposure. Using A mode on the METZ, it works good, almost perfect. but in very dim environment, A mode also produces overexposure.

How much improvement does the LCD bring you? is it noticeable difference?

Hello Pentaxians,

My relative keep asking my recent K5. He wants to buy my whole kit. I don't have much lenses.
My recent kit includes K5, Battery grip, Metz AF 58, Sigma 18-250 f3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM.

I think of K5iis as my next body.

Is it worthy to pay extra for IIS? Is P-TTL error still there with the IIS?
What new things come with the IIS?

Of course, I have to mention lense choice. I choose legendary Tamron 17-50 f2.8.

AF adjustment, using PK Tether, Pentax K5

Hello Pentaxians,

I have upgraded to the k5 recently and bought Sigma 18-250 superzoom.
I don't have many af lens to check its AF. But the Sigma 18-250 was focusing on back. it was noticeable and anyone can tell there is a problem on focusing when seeing LCD display. :(

Then I used my manual lens to catch focus with assist of k5's focus confirmation.
k5 indicates a focus light when focus point on back.
When using live view to use contrast detection AF, result was far better.
Object distance on lens when focused using contrast detection was nearer than the indicated distance when using using AF sensor.

So I guessed that there were problems on body.
Then used AF fine adjustment in body function, tried to make two distances indicated on lens nearer, and set +10 on all lenses.
Result was becoming nicer, I mean focus point was coming towards to actual point from back. But it was not enough.

Then used the PK_Tether, latest version to make the k5 in debug mode and set micro adjustment to +100um.
It means +10 point on inbody fineadjustment becomes 0 after the +100um setting.

Now AF focuses better with settings of +4 (in AF fine adjustment) plus +100um (set in debug mode). It equals +14 on AF fine adjustment settings.

But focus calibration on superzoom lens is difficult, couldn't set sweet number on AF fine adjustment settings to let the lens produce sharpest on wide variety of focal length.

But with +14, my gears make almost sharpest results with widest open and it delivers sharpest results when stopped down to f8.0.

I am so happy with the result.
