We finally decided to go for CZ Contax for the client, although I still continue with the idea as a personal project.
I already have K1.2/50, and about to order a K 2/28 Hollywood from Japan.
What is making me doubt at this moment is whether to mix the K lines with A, since the A 2.8/20 and the A 1.4/85 would be incredible, but I should verify that they have consistency of contrast and color between them.
Here you can see a project filmed with the ICVFX Virtual Production technique with Unreal Engine. 99.9% shot with a Sony FX6 and a Pentax K 1.2/50.

Now, with the new limited wide angle, a 21/31/43/77 is very tempting, but the housings can be hard to desing.

That camera exists and costs less than 2500, it's the Fujifilm xt3 (xt4 with ibis).
Yes...it's a shame we don't have a good Ricoh cinema camera, with a K-PL adapter, and a set of ¨Takumar Cine Primes¨. Lots of new brands popping up out of nowhere, without any kind of legacy (Kinefinity, Z-Cam, Meike, DZO, even Blackmagic).
Even many rentals rehousing vintage lenses (Canon FD, Contax, Olympus, Leica), since DoPs are quite desperate for a variety of looks, and to be able to work with FF/VistaVision.
The problem that I see with this Pentax strategy is economic, and arises from Carl Menger's theory of subjective value.Things are not worth what they cost, but what people want to pay. This is why the same camera brands want to switch to MILC, since their costs will drop considerably, but prices will remain the same.
This is very good in the long run, as new technology enables new competitors. Eventually prices will come down to a minimum above cost. As with all technology.
Something similar is happening with electric cars over internal combustion cars. Or with digital cinema cameras.
Pentax's approach of sticking with old technology is eventually going to drive them out of business because it's just going to be too expensive to produce.
Sounds like an excuse to me not to develop, invest and bring new products, since both Ricoh and Hoya do not want to close the brand (for prestige for other business units? for potential?) but they also do not want to take risks competing on an equal footing. same, and seek to create niches.
Either way, the Pentax K3 remains the greatest timelapse machine ever created by man.

If there is a video version with log gamma curva, 4k 120p 10bit 422 h265 codec, hdmi 2.1, mechanical ibis, articulated screen, nice lowlight and +14 stops of DR, and anamorphic mode....Im in.

Exactly. The idea is to add a vintage lens kit that is not so common in the market, such as the Canon FD, Nikkon AIS, Zeiss Contax, Zeiss ZK, Leica R, etc.
If the FA limited series had a ¨fast¨ 18mm or 20mm for Full Frame it would be a dream. Rental houses are looking for old rehoused FF lenses, as there have been many film cameras on the market in this format, and modern full frame cinema lenses are exponentially more expensive than s35mm lenses.
For now we are thinking about the Pentax A, 28/2, 35/2, 50/1.2 and 85/1.4 extendable in a second stage to 16/2.8, 20/2.8 and 100/2.8 macro.

Rehousing is when you take a still photography lens (or any particular lens, can be a projection lens or a particular old cine lens), and you use the glass of it in a Cine Lens housing.
For example, I leave you 2 pictures of the same lens, a Sigma 18-35mm f1.8/t2.0. One is the original, the otherone is a third party rehousing (there is also an oficial rehousing). When the rehousing is made in a zoom lens, it could also include parafocal mecanism.

Hello everyone. My name is Enrique, I am from Argentina and I have been a director of photography in film and advertising for about 5 years. I am interested in investing in a kit of SLR lenses for make them rehoused cinema lenses, since I am advising investors in a future rental house with which I am going to work.
I've been thinking about the following options:
Super takumar
Pentax M
Pentax K
Pentax A
Pentax Limited?
What is being more difficult for me is choosing which of those kits would have a better 35mm f2, or a better 28mm (f2 or f2.8). I am also having a hard time choosing which lens below 20mm would be better, considering the speed-IQ ratio. The latter is because the kit will have to be used in s35mm cameras apart from the new full frame cinema cameras.
Regarding the 50mm and 85mm, I understand that in general they are all quite good, but it would also be interesting to know which are the best, or most mythical.
I also find the option of limited lenses interesting, although there are no fast lenses below 31mm.
From what I have seen in the different providers of the rehousing service, Pentax are not frequent. I am even having a hard time finding Super Takumar rehoused (which is not the same as declicked and cine-mod).
Anyway, it seems like a good exercise for the forum. I did my entire still photography career with Pentax, and now I want to bring some of that legacy back to my career as a cinematographer.

Why?? Why not h.265 10bit?? Why not to make a gamma curve like everybody else?? they are 4 years late and not giving even a solid gamma curve, just a ¨flat¨ profile.
Im out...ill keep my K3 for timelapses, but Im selling the rest of the gear and getting a Xt4.

If it doesnt record 4k 60p h265 10bit 420 (422 extermal) in log and at least 400mb/s, Im jumping to Fuji to run n gun camera. And will sell all the glass. Need a second camera to my FS5, capable to make timelapse and still photo.

K3II + outstanding AF + 4k 60p 10bit 420 (10bit 422 via hdmi).
Yep, Im asking for a Fujifilm Xt3!! lol!!
Then, grab it all, and put inside some little cinema camera (like sony FS5) with clean 12bit SDI output, and launch Ricoh Cine with Tokinas or Pentax Ltd with official CineMod. Lol.

Just want the FujiFilm XT3 with a K mount and KP dynamic range...maybe IBIS.I know is mirrorless but I also know that no matter how fantastic the new apsc camera could be, It will not have 4k 10bit 422 clean video output, and I need that, besides my FS5+Shogun Inferno.

Ask about video. Not only 4k video, but sdi out, or ProRes....even a Ricoh cinema camera, lol. More indi brands like Kinefinity, Blackmagic or AJA are doing well. Even RED makes it way. Ok, Im dreaming, but I would love to ask ¨why not??¨ since pro video is replacing pro photography as concept at a commercial level. Nowdays almost every pro phographer have to be a filmmaker in some way.

Just got the sony FS5 + Shogun Inferno a month ago. I think is the best option in the 4k-7k price range. I mean....4k 120p raw in burst mode....4k 60p raw or ProRes. Cant be more happy, lol. I think is an amazing and bargain camera. Got a Novaflex adapter for my DA lenses too. Expensive but amazing choice.
Pentax should do something like that, maybe with Ricoh brand, honoring some old Ricoh camcorders, you know....the KP sensor, 4k 60p internal, and a clear SDI out. That would be groundbreaking.
Lets keep dreaming....its almost free, lol.

Ok, im writing this because I have NO IDEA how to do it, but I think it is quite possible. I do mostly video, with different cameras, but for still and timelapse I use K3. I have a K30 with the aperture problem and theres no one who can repair it in my country (Argentina). So what I have is a camera that can use just lenses with aperture ring....or....a super 35mm sensor for experimental purpouse.
My idea is somehow put an SDI output to the K30...before de compression, and see if I can record it with an external recorder or even a PC. It shall give me RAW footage. The point of doing this is exclusively for fun, and for a ¨wake up Pentax and do some nice video¨ purpouse.
Any idea where can I start?? I already contact an electronic engenier to see if he can do something like that, but I would like to see what you guys think about it.

I have a very little film production company in Argentina. We have some canon 6D, 5DII, and 2 sony a6300. Ziyung gimbal, and lots of gear around. We are 4 filmmakers that work as a rock band, lol, but Im the only photographer, and main cinematographer, with a K3 and a (now broken) K30. We make any kind of job...social, TV programs, Online programs, fiction, music video, corporate films, commercials, etc. Luckly we have a lot of work.
In side by side comparision, the K3 always lose to the rest of our cameras. But in every day job, In muted color profile it do the trick. Its incredible how many times it have save us. We also adapt all my Pentax glass to video, since a lot of lenses have aperture ring.
I already suscribe to your channel, and I KNOW, that cinematography is a lot more of how you put the lights than wich camera you use. I would love to see some uploads.
Hope one day Pentax surprise us all with a apsc (s35) camera, with clean output for 4k 10bit 422, and a nice slow motion. Until that day, we have one of the most amazing ¨timelapse machines¨ ever made :) . Do it before I get Sony FS5 with an external recorder and sony raw uptdate, lol.

Kind of dissapointed...
I was hoping some video improvements....seems like Ricoh doesnt realize that photographers have been becoming filmmakers and cinematographers too, since the DSLR filmmaking revolution in 2009. Pentax bodies, and K mount have a HUGE potential for becoming mainstrean, just giving 4k and a clean hdmi output. The GH5 or Sonys doesnt have lenses, or just have lenses through adapters. Pentax have a whole line of amazing APSC (Super 35mm) lenses. Lots of Pentax K mount MF legacy lenses are adapted to GH5, Sonys and Canon (not that much nowdays*) every day.
I dont know how they are not seeing this. Is just crazy. Canikon is not seeing it neither, so the clock goes on and Pentax misses the oportunity to groundbreak the DSLR/MILC filmmaker world.

Looks that its not a k3 succesor. And misteriously very expensive for an apsc body (ok, Nikon D500 is the exception, but is not a high end camera since the lack of top lcd screen). The only justification for that price is.....video?? :) . Last night I dream the KP was 4k, 1080p 120fps and clean hdmi output for a ninja flame and prores 422 color. If the K70 has the sony a6000 sensor...why the KP cant have the a6300 sensor, since a year has come since that sony came to life.
I know...its a dream. But its a nice dream.....Pentax groundbreaking DSLR filmmaking with all those cheap and amazing MF K mount legacy lenses.
